VII Sturm und Drang - Lamb of God (2015)

Alla ricerca degli ascolti perduti, questo è probabilmente il primo disco dei Lamb of God che ascolto con la dovuta concentrazione. So che è una frase che sto usando spesso ultimamente, ma è la verità, quindi mi fa piacere che lo sappiate. I Lamb of God vengono da Richmond, Virginia, e questo è il loro settimo disco con questa denominazione; in realtà, nel 1999 si chiamavano Burn the Priest, e fecero uscire un primo disco (omonimo) sotto quel nome, dopo di che, lo cambiarono a causa di cambiamenti di line-up e per non essere tacciati di satanismo. Provenienti da "terreni" death e thrash metal, accreditati anche come band metalcore, dimostrano ad ogni piè sospinto la loro principale influenza (quella dei Pantera), e, almeno oggi, li possiamo tranquillamente catalogare come band di groove metal, piuttosto tecnica. Soprattutto i due chitarristi, Mark Morton e Willie Adler (quest'ultimo fratello del batterista Chris), riescono a costruire pregevoli tappeti ritmici ed armonici, al tempo stesso potenti e ricercati, quasi al limite del progressive; influenze di metal classico, come pure di grandi band thrash metal (Metallica, Megadeth sicuramente; a tale proposito, Chris Adler ha recentemente annunciato che è entrato a far parte anche dei Megadeth), possono essere facilmente scovate ascoltando la loro musica.
Il disco in questione è uscito nel luglio del 2015, ed è il primo composto dalla band dopo l'incarcerazione del cantante Randy Blythe; vicenda complessa, iniziata nel 2010, quando durante un concerto a Praga, un fan della band, dopo essere salito sul palco due volte e respinto altrettante volte dalla security, al terzo tentativo ha abbracciato Blythe che lo ha respinto. Il fan è caduto di testa, è stato ricoverato, è entrato in coma ed è morto alcune settimane dopo. Due anni più tardi (2012), quando la band è tornata in Repubblica Ceca per un altro concerto, il cantante è stato arrestato appena sceso dall'aereo, e detenuto per 5 settimane nella prigione di Pankràc (Praga). Qui potete leggere nel dettaglio accadimenti e processo, ma quello che mi premeva sottolineare è che naturalmente, alcune liriche sono state giocoforza ispirate dalla detenzione. 
Il disco è godibile dai metal fan che sono rimasti sul pezzo, ed apprezzano gli ultimi sviluppi del genere, così come hanno apprezzato la fase thrash. Ottimo songwriting, disco potente con pezzi interessanti. Embers, ottima canzone devo dire, è arricchita dalla partecipazione di Chino Moreno dei Deftones, così come Torches vede quella di Greg Puciato dei Dillinger Escape Plan. Su Overlord i Lamb of God si concedono una sorta di break, scrivendo una specie di ballad, che però risulta incisiva e suggestiva al punto giusto, non facendo perdere di credibilità l'intera operazione.



In search of the lost listening, this is probably the first album of Lamb of God who I have listened with intense focus. Lamb of God are from Richmond, Virginia, and this is their seventh album under that name; in fact, in 1999 they were called Burn the Priest, and they released a first album (self-titled) under that name, after which, they changed because of changes in line-up and to avoid being accused of Satanism. From "land" of death and thrash metal, also credited as metalcore band, they shows at every turn their main influence (Pantera, of course), and, at least today, we can safely classify them as a band of groove metal, rather technical. Especially the two guitarists Mark Morton and Willie Adler (the latter brother of drummer Chris), are able to build rhythmics and harmonics valuable carpets, at the same time powerful and refined, almost to the limit of progressive; influences of classic metal, as well as great thrash metal bands (Metallica, Megadeth certainly; about that, Chris Adler recently announced that it has joined also Megadeth), can easily be unearthed by listening to their music.
The album in question came out in July of 2015, and is the first compound from the band after the jailing of vocalist Randy Blythe; complex story, which began in 2010, when during a concert in Prague, a fan of the band, after he took the stage twice and rejected many times by security, at the third attempt embraced Blythe which dismissed him. The fan fell by head, was hospitalized, fell into a coma and died a few weeks later. Two years later (2012), when the band were back in the Czech Republic for another concert, the singer was arrested just got off the plane, and detained for five weeks in the Pankrac prison (Prague). Here you can read in detail the events and process, but what I wanted to stress is that of course, some lyrics have been inspired by this detention.
The album can be enjoyed by metal fan who have remained updated, and appreciate the latest developments of the genre, as well as enjoyed the thrash phase. Great songwriting, powerful drive with interesting pieces. "Embers", excellent song I must say, is enriched by the participation of Chino Moreno of Deftones, as well as that of "Torches" sees Greg Puciato of Dillinger Escape Plan. On "Overlord" the band grant themselves a sort of break, writing a kind of ballad, but they keep on hitting and striking at the right point, not wasting the credibility of the whole operation.
