Nel 1917, a Rangoon, un funzionario pubblico britannico di origini birmane fugge il giorno stesso in cui riceve un telegramma dalla sua fidanzata che annuncia il suo arrivo per le nozze. Confesso di essere totalmente ignorante sulla filmografia del regista portoghese, come che sia, non mi trovo d'accordo con la critica accreditata, che ha esaltato questo suo nuovo lavoro, facendomi correre al cinema per vederlo. Il film è senza dubbio elegante e ben costruito, le recitazioni ottime e le ambientazioni ricostruite in modo convincente, ma è anche estenuante, al punto che sembra non finire mai.

I disagree with the accredited critics, who have raved about this new work, making me rush to the theater to see it. The film is undoubtedly elegant and well-crafted, with excellent acting and convincingly recreated settings, but it's also exhausting, to the point where it seems never-ending.
