No pain. The world is a wonderful whisper for those who can listen, if necessary in silence.

Cobra e incendi

Cobras and the Fires (The Mastermind Redux) - Monster Magnet (2015)

I pezzi reinterpretati sono otto [Dig That Hole che diventa She Digs That Hole, Watch Me Fade che conserva il titolo intatto ma che nell'edizione originale era semplicemente una bonus track, la title track Mastermind alla quale si aggiunge un '69, Hallucination Bomb che diventa Cobras and Fires (Hallucination Bomb), Gods and Punks che diventa Gods, Punks and the Everlasting Twilight, The Titan Who Cried Like a Baby che diventa semplicemente The Titan, When the Planes Fall From the Sky alla quale si aggiunge la parentesi (Sitar and Psycho Version), Time Machine qui in versione esclusivamente strumentale.

And now, we close the year with one thing that, as I mentioned earlier, seems to be one of the new trends: the revival of albums released while ago. For the Monster Magnet this is the second experience, with this rereading of their 2010 "Mastermind". The peculiarity of the readings from the band of Dave Wyndorf is that, you can guess it from the fact that the albums that they are re-reading are not at all old, is not "to refresh" the sound, but rethink the songs of those albums in a slightly different mood. As in the previous "Milking the Stars", the mood is much more psychedelic sixties. The pieces reinterpreted are eight ["Dig That Hole" that become "She Digs That Hole", "Watch Me Fade" who retains the title intact but which in the original was just a bonus track, the title track "Mastermind" to which is added a "'69", "Hallucination Bomb" that becomes "Cobras and Fires (Hallucination Bomb)", "Gods and Punks" becoming "Gods, Punks and the Everlasting Twilight", "The Titan Who Cried Like a Baby" becoming simply "The Titan", "When The Planes Fall From the Sky" to which is added the parenthesis "(Sitar and Psycho Version)", "Time Machine" here in purely instrumental version. In addition there is a cover of The Temptations, "Ball of Confusion" (remade as Wyndorf says, as would have made by the Hawkind or by Pink Fairies), with participation at the voice of the co-founder of MM Tim Cronin, and a digression mash up of pieces of Monster Magnet by Joe Barresi, sound engineer and producer, "I Live Behind the Paradise Machine: Evil Joe Barresi's Magnet Mash Vol.1". What to say? I understand the divertissement, but at this point it's hard not to think about the fact that Dave and his Monster Magnet are stalling.

Allucinogeno

Hallucinogen - Kelela (2015)

As in other cases, I failed to mention earlier about her debut "Cut 4 Me" (mixtape of 2013, released in deluxe edition in 2015), and now I try to recover, talking about this newer and updated release. Of Ethiopian American origins, but born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Maryland, Kelela Mizanekristos starts singing jazz standards, then switches to progressive metal, and then find its way to the final sound, a kind of UK dance style. Helped by Prince William, Solange Knowles, then landed in the "hands" of Arca, which has produced at least one song on this EP.
One iTunes user described her as FKA twigs mixed with Mariah Carey, and I must say that there is not gone too far, at least, the definition is fun.
What I can tell you is that the young lady has a great voice, not only r'n'b, and, with the help of cutting-edge producers, she is definitely taking an experimental road, which will bear fruit. For the moment, these six pieces (that, in terms of lyrics, run through the beginning, middle, and end of a relationship, in reverse order) are all to be enjoyed.

Right On! - Jenny Lee (2015)

Life, Long Lonely Winter, Blind).

Recently released, this is the solo debut of Jenny Lee Lindberg, bass and vocals in Warpaint, here a bit of everything (lead vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards). I repeat endlessly, because I like her: she is also the sister of the actress Shannyn Sossamon. It's called "Right On!", and it does not stray much from the sound of Warpaint, perhaps here even more dark oriented and very inspired from the 80's british new wave (sure will come to mind the Joy Division, listening to this "Right On!" as a whole ).
I am sorry to repeat myself, but the problem is a bit the same of her main band: much effort to be mysterious, fascinating, velvety, with a dark and nihilistic aftertaste, the sound it's convincing in the songs that have full instrumentation ("White Devil", "Never" - this really very close to plagiarism from Joy Division - "Riot" - nice bass line, I have to admit it), and not so good in the pieces more "rarefied" ("Real Life", "Long Lonely Winter", "Blind").
Definitely not my favorite genre, but may be of interest to some of you.

Melissa

M3LL155X - FKA twigs (2015)

If I hadn't read about it, I could not have explain it to you: M3LL155X is for Melissa, and Melissa is none other than (clarifies by the artist) "the personal feminine energy of twigs. It is not an alter ego, and never had a name until the EP in question has not been completed." Again, she called the EP Melissa to be able to separate it from herself; Melissa is the same feminine energy that made her want to appear pregnant in the video for "Glass & Patron" and music videos following.
Speaking of music: 5 tracks for less than 20 minutes of music, but just enough to keep the attention on one of the music artists most interesting that music has had in the last few years. Stylistically very similar to her previous productions, sinuous use of electronics and admirable that of her wonderful voice, modulated in an infinite palette of variations, perhaps the most successful piece, or maybe just my favorite, is the opener "Figure 8" (nothing to do with the one from Ellie Goulding), but throughout the EP, for the ones who are "accustomed" to twigs and its style, is a small masterpiece, so I would re-affirm everything good I said, on the occasion the review of her, so far, unique full length.
The EP release was accompanied at the same time from the exit of the short film that you can found below, and enclosing the already edited clip of "Glass & Patron", together with those of "Figure 8", "I'm Your Doll", "In Time", and a hint of "Mothercreep". Cameo by Michèle Lamy.

Croce Tao

Tau Cross - Tau Cross (2015)

Tau Cross, debut that came out in 2015 from the band of the same name, is the birth of what might be called a punk-metal supergroup. In fact, Tau Cross are formed by Rob The Baron Miller (Amebix) on vocals, Michel Away Langevin (Voivod) on drums, Jon Misery (Misery from Minneapolis, to note that there are dozens of bands that are so called) and Andy Lefton (War // Plague) on guitars (Lefton care also backing vocals, as I understand it).
The result, for ears not properly trained, it may be a Motorhead album played in a garage and sung by a bunch of drunks. You have to go a little deep, and perhaps know the background of these dudes. The influence of Motorhead is undeniable, as well as always it was for Amebix; the stronger direct influence seems to be the one that came from the band of the singer. The one from Black Sabbath is the other strong influence (with "Hangmans Hyll" we are very close to the plagiarism, at least as far as the guitar riffs). But the whole stuff is filtered from the punk experiences, especially the crust one, of the band members, and from all the sub-genres, and it's not hard to recognize as well a new wave aftertaste à la Killing Joke.
Album raw and edgy, but able to give satisfaction.

Viola

Purple - Baroness (2015)

If I Have to Wake Up (Would You Stop the Rain)?

Here it is, the gift of Christmas. For me, for you, for everyone. The new, bombastic, massive, epic, megalithic and monolithic, new album from Baroness.
Where to start? By the burning "stereo" solo of "Shock Me" (a piece of dazzling beauty), echoing a very classic sound maiden-esque, and that plagiarizing the title of a famous song by the Kiss (used in tour of Alive! and Alive II for the solo of Ace Frehley), or from the intro, a little "Eye of the Tiger", of "Try To Disappear"? The irresistible crescendo of the final of "Chlorine & Wine", used as a single precursor, and that even now after more than a month continues to be a beautiful song, almost impossible to categorize, incredibly powerful and delicate, or from the almost touching, almost Christmas-song "If I Have to Wake Up (Would You Stop the Rain)"? From the incessant "The Iron Bell", or from the sumptuous opening "Morningstar"?
We are facing the final transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly, the nth band that is giving an enormous contribution to the maturation of a genre that was once in a niche, and that today, we can say without fear of contradiction, it is in the public domain, and it enjoys a respect that once, we would never have guessed.
Many of you will know that after the acclaimed (including from me) last album "Yellow & Green", during the UK tour, the band was involved in an accident: the tour bus fell from a viaduct, 15 August 2012. After this accident, drummer Allen Blickle and bassist Matt Maggioni, having suffered from broken vertebrae, were forced, after a few months, to leave the band. The leader John Baizley (guitar and vocals), was in danger of losing an arm (the left, and suffered the rupture of the right leg, which forced him to a long recovery). New members, Nick Jost on bass and Sebastian Thomson on drums, both from Trans Am, are super-good musicians, and therefore the quality of the band, completed on lead guitar by Peter Adams, was not affected at all, in fact.
Listening to "Purple" is something overwhelming, and very rewarding for a big metal fan, like me. Barriers no longer exist, and the kind of genre that Baroness are playing now is just great metal. Multiple influences, and the assembly is superb, a succession of grandiose pieces, for one of the finest records of this 2015, which comes just within the final rush.

Arte degli angeli

Art Angels - Grimes (2015)

As I keep saying, I am putting myself to the test more and more. On the fourth try, I can write about an album of Claire Elise Boucher aka Grimes (no relation with Rick of The Walking Dead), Canadian artist, 27, of Vancouver, precisely on the fourth album.
As it happens at times, I was not able to "enter" in his records so far, especially its previous "Visions", particularly acclaimed album of 2012. One problem that I do not deny, but that sometimes prevents me to tell you about all the interesting things are happening in the music world. This time, a few days off, then a moment of relative tranquility, allowed me to enter the world of Grimes, and to appreciate her "Art Angels".
I could make a dramatic own goal by telling you what I'm about to say, but I am actually in a mood of a full transparency, then I'll say: I was able to appreciate much more than "Visions" this new "Art Angels", because this new album is a little more accessible. Grimes is a young artist dance / electronic / pop also very gifted as a producer; she has good ideas also very experimental, incorporating influences ranging from ABBA to Bjork, and this time decided to try to merge the experimentalism more stringent with a certain degree of accessibility. The result is a quirky, yet surprisingly cozy disk danceable pop with electronic influences very strong, even extreme, but at several times, irresistible.
Tracks like "Flesh Without Blood", "Belly of the Beat","Kill V. Maim", "Artangels", "Pin", "REALiTi", are small masterpieces, and I must admit that, although I never thought of falling in love with a sound so electronic.
To try.

Valorizzare una farfalla

To Pimp a Butterfly - Kendrick Lamar (2015)

When you think that the challenges are over, here's another one comes. When an album, of a genre that is not really what I prefer, is declared the best of the year by Billboard, Complex, Consequence of Sound, Entertainment Weekly, Pitchfork Media, Rolling Stone US, Slant Magazine, Spin, The Guardian, Vice, from one of three journalists who draw up this kind of music charts for The New York Times, and is one of the highest in the ranking of NME, Stereogum, Time and in the ranking of the other two journalists from the New York Times, well, I can not resist from listen it, and talking about it.
Meanwhile, know this: the genre with which is cataloged is called conscious hip hop or political hip hop. More or less, exactly the opposite of rap disengaged, gangsta and bling bling rap. While it is difficult to understand all the lyrical references, even reading and translating texts, suffice it to say that the lyrics have generated a lot of discussion, even controversy, in the US media, that the refrain of "Alright" was sung during protests against police violence against African Americans, and by many (including BET), the song has been identified as the modern Black National Anthem.
The album is complex, but absolutely not boring or complicated. Many pieces are fully engaging and catchy, while in terms of musical influences can be heard by all and you can heard in it many influences, with references (and "quotes") from George Clinton to Michael Jackson, from jazz to nu soul, with important and different guests, as Snoop Dogg , Pharrell Williams and Sufjan Stevens.
Certainly, D'Angelo and Lamar are bringing black music to a higher level.

Blues dell'epoca oscura

Black Age Blues - Goatsnake (2015)

It is a very welcome return this one from Goatsnake, a band formed by people who really know much in music: enjoy reading the biographies of its members. These persons have played in seminal hardcore punk bands, doom metal, sludge and so on, but to make ends meet, have also given rise to independent labels and worked as a tour manager, just to contextualize. Despite 5 EP ("IV", "Man of Light", "Dog Days", "Trampled Under Hoof", a split with Burning Witch, between 1998 and 2004), since 1996 (the year of its constitution, immediately after the disbanded of the legendary The Obsessed of Scott Wino Weinrich, by the two members of the rhythm section Guy Pinhas and Greg Rogers) to today, Goatsnake has released only two albums, "Goatsnake Vol. 1" (1999) and "Flower of Disease" (2000).
Despite the many influences, and experiences around the most different extreme music, the sound of Goatsnake is the most sabbath-esque that you can find around, and is probably the best: just the beginning of the title track or the "sick" harmonic on "Jimi's Gone" may be enough to make you understand that we are facing the giants of what today we might call doom/stoner. The rifferama set up by Greg Anderson (Thorr's Hammer, Burning Witch, Sunn O))), Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, Burial Chamber Trio, Ascend, Galleon's Lap, Engine Kid) is monumental for inventiveness and power, and the rhythmic section formed by Scott Renner (Sonic Medusa) on bass, and founder Greg Rogers (The Obsessed, Sonic Medusa) on drums, it is impeccable and equally massive. Is the voice of Pete Stahl (Scream, Wool, it seems that he is the one who inspired the song "My Hero" by Foo Figthers) that makes the difference between a good band inspired by Black Sabbath, and one that has an edge. The vocal timbre, that, as the friend Monty (despite the constant quotes I assure you that he neither paid me, nor are we lovers) properly noted, looks a lot like the one of Ian Astbury, can create unimaginable suggestions: listening to this album on a bus direct from Marrakech to Essaouira, I had goose bumps because, somehow, with the monolithic riffs, reminded me of the best Alice in Chains.
As the title says, everything comes naturally from the so-called devil's music, the blues, of course, played in an extreme way. Besides, I hate to repeat it, but it is right, even Black Sabbath departed from there.
A must for fans of the genre.

Città gloriosa sbiadita

Faded Gloryville - Lindi Ortega (2015)

Pretty sure, it's hard not to fall in love with the voice that sings, on this record, "Someday Soon". Really hard.
Lindi Ortega, born in 1980, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, but now resides in Nashville, Tennessee, USA (where else could be?). Her Wiki-bio says (rightly, I must note), that her voice has been described as a blend of the voices of Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash and Emmylou Harris. 10 years as an independent into the Toronto music scene, a city that, like Austin, Texas, and as it made years ago Seattle, is proving its talent pool; described as "Toronto's best kept secret" and nicknamed "Indie Lindi", in that period brought out two albums and one EP, "The Taste of Forbidden Fruit" (2001), "Fall From Grace" (2007) and "Lindi Ortega EP" (2008). Descends from Mexican families (you could guess) and Irish (this a little less), and for a decade has been working in pizza places and flea markets, until, after which in 2008 he released another EP ("The Drifter") for Cherrytree/Interscope, she signed up for the Last Gang Records, and for them she brought out the beautiful "Little Red Boots" (2011), the EP "Tennessee Christmas" (2011), "Cigarettes & Truckstops"" (2012), "Tin Star" (2013), the collection "iTunes Session" (2014), and finally, this album we are going to talk about now, "Faded Gloryville", released in August of 2015.
We said. Beautiful voice. Then: great charm, although the girl seems fascinated more by truckers than hipster. We are definitely more close to the pure Country, than a generic Americana, as far as I can understand. The disc is great, delicate and well played. Well written with various kind of songs, albeit in a genre that is generally predictable: from the mid tempos as "Ashes", "Tell It Like It Is", "When You Ain't Home", to the quicker "Run-Down Neighborhood" and "Run Amuck", from ballads as "Half Moon", "Faded Gloryville" and the aforementioned "Someday Soon", to the two gems (in my opinion) of the disc, the bittersweet "I Ain't the Girl", it seems, at least from transport by which she sings, partly autobiographical, and the beautiful cover of the very classic from Bee Gees "To Love Somebody", already covered by Nina Simone, Michael Bolton, Michael Bublé and Jimmy Sommerville, the talent and the wonderful voice of the girl comes out.

Nuovi bermuda

New Bermuda - Deafheaven (2015)

Definitely, the combo of San Francisco that runs around the two founding members George Clarke (vocals) and Kerry McCoy (guitar), has refined his style and is a candidate to be one of the freshest, most impressive bands of the new metal.
A sort of shoegazing metal style, that distinguishes them from the beginning of "Roads to Judah", from the second "Sunbathers", of which I spoke in laudatory terms rather, it aged, as I said, working out of solid, compact, long songs, often consist of melodic parts , introductory parts tense and fast, deadly slowdowns, even guitar solos very interesting, drones that form the carpet for killer drums steps and roaring voice of George.
Really hard to elect a favorite among the five pieces that make up this new and intriguing work. You have to listen "Brought to the Water", "Luna", "Come Back", "Baby Blue" and "Gifts for the Earth" all in one breath, for about 47 minutes of enlightening post metal, which as noted by critics accredited and not (including me, already last time), cite Mogwai and Dillinger Escape Plan, and try to bring, in fact, the post metal to the next level.
Even if they won't be the chosen ones, they certainly are giving their contribution.

Mutante

Mutant - Arca (2015)

Sometimes I have the impression that the exams never end. I do not know how I got the idea, but I have made up my mind to review this record as well.
Well, first, a bit of information.
Arca is the stage name of Alejandro Ghersi, 25 year-old Venezuelan, who grew up, as he says, in cotton wool, because he came from a very wealthy family. Well educated, he had trouble accepting his gayness. All this did not prevent him to establish himself as one of the producers in vogue currently. Worked, and made the fortune of FKA Twigs (EP2), Kelela (Hallucinogen), Bjork (Vulnicura), Kanye West (Yeezus), is based in London, and last year debuted with Xen, its first album.
Now, there are certainly more experienced persons to judge an album of this genre, which Wikipedia cataloged it as experimental electronic, but what I can tell you is that a dip in "Mutant" is like enter in a stream of consciousness of somebody else, and that you could be overwhelmed. It seems very improvised, but maybe it isn't. It could be frightening, fascinating, and even, might make you the same effect as a drug: to bring you straight into another dimension.

Miglioramento

Meliora - Ghost (2015)

Brevemente.

Briefly. Time ago, my mate Monty asks me what I thought of the swedish band Ghost. I had never heard of them. I managed to listen one of the two previous albums, but I have obviously forgotten. Now, I began to listen carefully to this new Meliora, and the conclusion was fast: this album sucks. The thing is very strange: the Ghost appear as a Satanist band, inverted crosses, the singer (they have changed three ... will mean something) self-appointed Pope Emeritus (I, II and III is the name of the present one), he has the make up of a skull, and he dress with papal clothes, the other musicians are nameless and dress up as caricatures extracted (badly) from Star Wars. But the music has nothing to do with either the black metal, or with death, and very little with heavy metal, and it is the stuff of amateurs. As well as by amateurs, apparently, for example, is the video of the first extract from this album (Cirice). Musically, they remind more a prog band than a metal band.
Sure, the music has improved, compared to the first album, so that, for example, "From the Pinnacle To the Pit" could be a lost track of Stone Temple Pilots, and "He Is" a discarded piece from the Asia. In the end, I have to conclude, more or less, as concluded my friend Monty: you can not tell if they are joking around, or are really a group that is convinced to do a thing, making quite another. At the end of the day, you will not miss anything, really, if you don't know them.

Vostro, sognante

Yours, Dreamily - The Arcs (2015)

"Yours, Dreamily" is the debut of The Arcs, one of the many parallel projects, beyond the most important The Black Keys, by the unstoppable Dan Auerbach. Started as a solo project, it has naturally transformed in the creation of a band, or at least a kind of. In addition to our own, in fact, we find Leon Michels (keyboards, guitars, horns), Richard Swift (drums, percussion, keyboards, acoustic guitar and vocals), Homer Steinweiss (drums), and Nick Movshon (bass), also credited as a songwriters, in addition to a rather substantial list of collaborations in the studio, the Mariachi Flor de Toloache (a female mariachi band from New York, here that deals with voices, choirs, brass and strings), Matt Chamberlain on drums on one track, Lee Fields, voice on "Nature's Child", and many many more.
Result? Pleasant, could not be otherwise, Auerbach and the others are all great songwriters, with retro tastes but definitely good, songs that are not surprising (because we already know exactly what they will give us, knowing now perfectly the aftertastes that Dan likes), then nothing new, nothing explosive, but the time spent listening to "Yours, Dreamily" is not wasted.

With all the love that we can want a nice band, full of talent, who arrive to title one song of this new, third album "Cacio e Pepe" (that will be delight of all the Romans), which we hate just because already the cover this "La Di Da Di" makes you hungry, it's really hard to continue to listen to them without being assailed by a sense of "deja entendu" (of course, the equivalent of déjà vu in music).
Dave Konopka (bass, guitar, effects), John Stanier (drums) and Ian Williams (guitar, keyboards), orphans of Tyondai Braxton, decided to cut even the featuring vocals (as in the previous album "Gloss Drop"), and devote himself exclusively to instrumental music, with this third album. With the same approach, which I had already defined in the past "playful", they go on their way, but the results are mixed. There are interesting songs, that can "talk" without voice ("Non-Violence" is one of these, and other rides reminiscent of the two previous albums), but others are simple jam session of three extremely talented musicians, but who can not convince in the entirety of a full length album. I dare say that, taking into account the necessary differences, and contextualizing, it still takes a bit 'of time and development, to be able to communicate something viscerally beautiful without a singer, in the same way EL & P were able to do, or, in their instrumental parts, the italian jazz-rock band of the seventies, Area.

Il martello delle streghe

Hammer of the Witches - Cradle of Filth (2015)

The British band, which always revolves around the figure of the leader Dani Filth, the only survivor of the original line-up, have changed directions, and of course, has incorporated new influences, as well as everyone else, to survive and not be always equal to themselves. Of course, to my ears, probably unfamiliar with this symphonic black metal style, they do not sound so different from those of Nymphetamine in 2004, but it is certainly my problem.
The Cradle of Filth, anyway, remain faithful, in the construction of sonic carpets, and in the harmonicity of the guitars solos, to the Iron Maiden style, they are inspired, of course, the top of the genre, like Slayer and Venom, modernizing them, all of this is intersected with orchestral symphonies classically inspired, extremes the rhythms of the songs until the climax, and are inspired by obscure mythology for the lyrics. It's true that some glimpses of their pieces are also enjoyable, as for the melodic part, the rifferama is more than welcome in terms of metal style, and there are often excellent solos, but the singing style of Dani to me, still seems to be a little grotesque. As well as her make-up for the stage, which is a cross between those of King Diamond and Gene Simmons.

Averti nel mio deserto

Have You in My Wilderness - Julia Holter (2015)

Of Julia Holter, almost 31 year old graduated to the LA CalArts, intellectual musician, singer, keyboardist and drummer, next collaborator of Jean-Michel Jarre, it was discussed a lot, in a good way, in magazines and on line, from some year, and especially after the release of his previous "Loud City Song", in 2013. I confess: I have heard it many times, apparently without due concentration, and I was not able to take out a spider from his hole, I mean, I did not find the key reading, and this is why I haven't wrote about it. Now, I asked myself to listen seriously her fourth album (for those interested, other than the aforementioned they are "Tragedy", 2011, and "Ekstasis", 2012), to tell you that she takes us through his music, in a world extremely smooth, just to give you references, exactly the opposite of what Anna von Hausswolff do. Soft melodies, definitely refined, unpretentious nor low-fi or alternative, almost orchestral arrangements, construction of the song format complex but not difficult, thrifty use of any kind of instruments, but with wide range of types (piano, keyboards of any kind, effects, drums, strings, bass, guitars, horn section), and a lovely voice, that, in some passages, is so full of style that it could be French, if she weren't singing in English (if you know what I mean). Some pieces may well be catchy ("Sea Calls Me Home", "Everytime Boots", "Feel You", "Silhouette", the more rhythmics), in others she digresses a bit too much, but it's always a good listening.

Il paradiso è lì

Paradise is There - Natalie Merchant (2015)

Alcune digressioni.
Punto.

Surprisingly, after the Monster Magnet, also Natalie Merchant recently decided that is worth to reinterpret one of her old albums (the first, Tigerlily), after twenty years. So, I am here listening to these wonderful songs, sung by a wonderful voice, belonging to a person probably wonderful. New arrangements, mature voice, twenty years later, perhaps less troubled, more calm, conscious. Nevertheless, always wonderful. I do not need to add more. Excellent opportunity for those who have not ever considered getting to know her music, moving for who loved her, and for whom is never tired of listening to this record. "Beloved Wife" is probably one of the most beautiful songs I've ever been able to listen. Period.

Il boia bastardo

The Bastard Executioner - di Kurt Sutter - Stagione 1 (10 episodi: FX) - 2015

Galles, XIV secolo.
