Cornucopia

Bjork, Unipol Arena BO, 23 settembre 2023

Senza ulteriori parole, grandissima, enorme Bjork.

I smile when, shortly before the start of the concert, a voice from the speakers asks not to use cell phones, and to enjoy the show (which the majority of those present will NOT do, despite the same voice specifying that the show will be available from the following day on the official website): I left mine in the car of my trusty Mazza, who accompanies me on this Saturday in Bologna, in which the weather suddenly turns stormy. The curtain is made of ropes, which will amplify the effect of the visuals, the stage looks like a materialized fairy tale, and during the concert the visual spectacle will be of a superior level, many euros but never regrets. It doesn't end here: the setlist, which despite the "concept" focuses on the Icelandic's latest works, ranges across his entire discography, and the performances are worth it, because they are completely rearranged. Two multi-instrumentalists (one more focused on percussion) and a harpist, plus an Icelandic flute septet (all women), make up the sound of a truly unique experience. Without further words, great, huge Bjork.

Festa rossa mesta

Marlene Kuntz + Marco Rovelli, 13 agosto 2023, Festa Rossa Perignano Lari (PI)

With a delay of about an hour, here is the band led by a well-preserved (physically, I mean) Cristiano Godano. The formation now sees on drums Niccolò Fornabaio (I imagine that the reader already knows that a few months ago the historic drummer Luca Bergia died, who however had taken a hiatus from the band the previous year), the multi-instrumentalist Davide Arneodo (keyboards, violin, synth, piano, mandolin, percussion, backing vocals), bassist Luca Saporiti, together with the other survivor of the original line-up Riccardo Tesio, lead guitarist.
The lineup is thought out in a particular way: the six tracks taken from the latest album Karma Clima (the only one I've never listened to, even though I was convinced of the opposite, in the sense that I was convinced that I had given up listening much earlier, on the contrary, research on this same blog disproved my now elderly memory) they all played in succession, after an embarrassing (vocally) version of Ineluttabile. A choice that amplifies the gap between the "old" productions and the new ones. The finale is in crescendo, with Nuotando nell'aria and the encores Grazie and Sonica.
The scattered thoughts, mine and those of my friends: "as long as Godano embraces acoustics, instead of electrics, we won't be there". "I understood why I never listened to the last record." "People want to hear the old stuff." In my post concert thoughts, and even now as I write about it, I am conflicted. Rereading the reviews of the albums from 2007 onwards, it was clear that I appreciated their commitment and the physiological desire for change, a change of course, a sign of an intelligent band. Evidently, live amalgamation is very difficult to achieve: I would take the liberty of suggesting a reflection on this point to the beloved Marlene Kuntz.

Singolo

Mono + Gggolddd, 16 maggio, Cinema Perla, Bologna

On the day before the disaster in Romagna, here I am again in Bologna, this time at the Cinema Perla, for a concert that until just before the start was about to be postponed due to the bad weather. It will also be why the public is not so numerous. I'm here for the Dutch Gggolddd, who open for a set of about three quarters of an hour, obviously based above all on their latest This Shame Should Not Be Mine, with some rearranged songs (remarkable the final On You, introduced by Milena Eva, the singer and leader, explaining that, like a large part of her opera production, it is based on the rape she suffered a few years ago), penalized by the lack of dynamism on stage, balanced by the great voice of the singer and her magnetism. The main dish is the Japanese Mono, over twenty years of experience and massive sound, as phlegmatic on stage as devastating when they open the gas. Eight songs, ranging throughout their vast repertoire, and an approach that reminds me very much that of Mogwai for how they alternate "carrot and stick" musically, passing from purely shoegaze moments of great class to other aggressive and noisy ones.

Grande coraggioso

Big Brave + Aicher + Long Gone, 30 aprile 2023, Circolo DEV, Bologna

Finally I can see the notorious Circolo DEV, two large rooms in the center of Bologna in a side street of via Irnerio. When I arrive, the band is eating pizza to go, right outside the club, where sounds are heard, probably the soundcheck of the Italian band that will open tonight. Very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the openers are Long Gone from Milan, a band that can be understood as coming from hardcore punk but now relaxed towards an appreciable, but quite predictable slowcore. After them it's the turn of Aicher, a solo project by Liam Andrews, bassist and singer of the Australian My Disco, a very electronic stuff with a certain effect, but in my opinion, not essential. The choice is the result, in a small way, of a trend that is now very popular, to save money and amortize the costs of the tours: the same bassist acts as an added musician to the Big Brave, which therefore tonight present themselves with a line up that we could define "classic", bass, two guitars (one played by the singer, with a voice tremendously similar to that of Anna von Hausswolff, Robin Wattie) and drums. I was very curious to see them at work, and I wasn't disappointed: the impact is that of a sort of Melvins with even rather marked noise touches, an imposing wall of sound. The set list is easily described: that of the last Nature Morte, performed in exactly the same chronology. They end by thanking those present and the managers for having "spoiled" them. I go back to the hotel reflecting on the difference between those who are almost 60 years old go to see concerts for 40 people, and those of 40 years old go see famous retirees who fill stadiums.

Liefde en licht

Igorrr + Amenra + Der Weg einer Freiheit + Hangman's Chair, 25 Marzo 2023, Link Bologna

For this excellent high-level metal appointment, the Bologna Link reveals its limits: parking. Cars parked along the access road for at least 2 kilometres. That being said, hats off to the evening. I arrive deliberately late to miss the opening of the French Hangman's Chair, already seen in action a few months ago opening for Paradise Lost, but in time to grab a beer and find a secluded but decent position. The Germans Der Weg einer Freiheit play second, black metal strongly influenced by the Scandinavian one like Darkthrone with some attempt, timid it must be said, to flow into post-metal. Nonetheless appreciable. With all due respect to tonight's headliners, Amenra (for me this is the fifth time I've seen them, two acoustic and three electric) are the reason I'm here; and, ça va sans dire, the Belgian band never disappoints. Zero dialogue, but only the final "message" (the writing on the screen behind the stage that appears after every concert, even tonight is no exception) is worth a thousand words ("love and light", see post title), and a devastating (accompanied by an always splendid work of the lights, simple but very effective) "firepower". A set of just under an hour, which however alone is worth the price of the entire ticket. The collective that surrounds and completes Gautier Serre aka Igorrr's band is the most heterogeneous imaginable, and the result is extremely interesting, especially on record, a little less live. Black metal mixed with baroque music (a classical vocalist, mezzo-soprano Marthe Alexandre) and with very hard dance, breakcore mixed with industrial metal. Excellent involvement of the public, but I leave before the end, that's okay.

Shook

Algiers, Bronson (RA), 17 febbraio 2023

I'll start from the end: maybe it didn't depend on the band, maybe it was the environment, and I'll try to analyze everything, but this concert, by an excellent, innovative, committed, very interesting band, didn't convince me.
I've been waiting for them since before the pandemic; now they are here, dozing on the sofas of the Bronson, shortly after 9 PM, the estimated time for the beginning of the concert or the opening of the doors, or both. Not all, but three of them. Three out of five, because the line up has grown, surprisingly. Yes, Algiers now have two drummers. A full hour and a half passes before they deign to go on stage. Little by little, the public arrives. It's a very diverse audience, and I dare say a good half seem to be here by accident. We were talking about the Algiers: abundantly after 10.30 PM they start playing, directly over a track by Laura Pausini, with Cleanse Your Guilt Here, one of the nine tracks (out of the total 15 of the concert) that they will play from Shook, their new album, which it will be out in a week. A very strange choice, but after all, in line with the politics of a band that certainly cannot be defined, and which doesn't care in the least, to be commercial. In fact, it won't be the only choice of the genre: for example, despite being in the setlist, they won't perform The Underside of Power, one of their most beautiful, but perhaps also most famous, songs. I mean, the Algiers don't give a shit. They go straight, mixing post punk, hip-hop, afrofolk, dub, free jazz, afrobeat, Southern Gothic literature, philosophy and Black Lives Matter. Their songs are complicated, difficult, and they don't even dream of simplifying them live. The sounds are not perfect, but Franklin James Fisher's voice is excellent, and the musicians are also up to it and give themselves a great deal. Still, the concert never seems to get off the ground, the audience seems engaged only in the very first rows, and I'm afraid this could be the reason why they don't play their best track in the encores, even though it was expected. Algiers are still a great band, but this concert wasn't that great overall, despite what you'll read elsewhere.

Blooms of Oblivion

Emma Ruth Rundle + Jo Quail, Teatro San Leonardo (BO), 16 febbraio 2023

Those few but loyal readers of this blog already know it, but if you have come here by chance, just go to the top left, and type Emma Ruth Rundle in the search field: you will thus be able to realize my admiration for the artist in question. Work issues, other concerts and spending review, this time mean that on three Italian dates, I "only" attends her Bologna's concert. Sold out the beautiful theater which is accessed from a classic portico, a portico that acts as a witness to two previous and waiting queues, orderly and subdued, of an extremely heterogeneous audience. The theater is small but very good acoustically.
Opens (and finally I can see her live) the Londoner Jo Quail, virtuoso cellist, already with Myrkur and with Mono, very nice and talkative, with her tailor-made cello and her loop station she gives life to a set of about 45 minutes, hypnotic and enveloping. Definitely to be explored and to continue to follow.
The concert continues almost on schedule, and Emma shows up with a curious black and white dress (but clearly taken from the photo sessions and videos that accompanied her latest works), exposing the program (the entire Engine of Hell album, in exactly the same order as on the record) and sitting down at the piano. Off we go, and the shiverings is what I will feel the most in the next hour. She alternates piano and guitar, a few jokes, even very funny, albeit, in my opinion, with an underlying inner torment, and indeed, she performs his entire 2021 album, allowing two encores without going out and coming back, and also announcing it, Marked For Death and Pump Organ Song. A beautiful and sometimes heartbreaking voice, a dimension that evidently is the one that best suits her currently, a beautiful concert, with a gem, Citadel performed together with Jo Quail. An unforgettable evening.

Ormar

Come ho detto prima, scelta indovinata, concerto indimenticabile.

Although I haven't heard anything from their past, when I heard Kvitrafn I was so enthralled, that I decided it would be interesting to see the Norwegian band live. When I realized they had a rescheduled date (originally it was supposed to be in 2021) in Milan, it was already sold out. When they added another the day before, I rushed to buy the ticket. Having witnessed it, I can say that it was a totally right choice.
We would have to investigate thoroughly why Wardruna are 99% followed by a metal audience. For where they come from? For their background? Because of the Manowar? I don't think the answer can be proven, so we remain with the doubt: it is so. Then, outside the elegant but modern Dal Verme theater, and as soon as the doors open, inside, it's a metal invasion, mingling with other people from who knows what background. Two totally sold out dates (the capacity is officially 1,436 seats), palpable expectation, a stage that is immediately elegant and evocative at the same time, and finally, with a few minutes late on the schedule, the show begins. And it's truly a show: sober but effective lights, which often generate really beautiful plays of shadows on the background and appropriate to the atmosphere, some sparse visuals inspired by lyrics (and the show within the show are the ancient instruments used by the band), a band very close-knit led by a master of ceremonies Einar Selvik, and a lineup of an hour and a half that embraces their entire discography. The contribution of the singer Lindy Fay Hella, among other things, was great. An adoring audience to say the least, which is finally "satisfied" by Einar after almost an hour and twenty of songs, in practice before the encores, when he finally concedes himself, with a heartfelt, almost moved speech, on the root of the music they play, and with a message of peace and universal brotherhood, but not pompous. Again Einar repeats after the first encore, dismisses the band, to thank again for the warm welcome, promising to return as soon as possible, and introducing his (from one of his solo works) Snake Pit Poetry talking about the TV series Vikings, set to music by them, and of the historical and legendary figure of Ragnar Lodbrok, to whom (those who have seen the series will know) this song is inspired/dedicated. As I said before, guessed choice, unforgettable concert.

As the Moon Rests

A.A. Williams + Karin Park, 16 dicembre 2022, Bloom, Mezzago (MB)

The Swedish Karin Park opens, in front, indeed, in the middle (the keyboards are placed in front of the stage, audience height) for the thirty people present, and with the entrance door open which certainly does not create intimacy, especially on the (many) low-rhythm tracks, Karin who would also be the wife of Kjetil Nernes of Arabrot (as well as an added member of the same band), but who has a considerable solo career, as well as having worked as an actress, model, and even having played the part of Fantine in a version Norwegian of Les Misérables, between 2017 and 2018. I didn't copy from her Wikipedia page, I swear that the impression I got is that of a voice between that of Fever Ray and that of Bjork, and a beautiful compositional vein especially when remains on electronic pop but intimist, not too much when it launches into dance rides. Very beautiful Blue Roses and Opium. Hilarious her little daughter with soundproof headphones and dressed as a ballerina running from one side of the Bloom to the other. A little behind schedule, here is A.A. Williams and her band (another guitarist who helps with backing vocals and keyboards when needed, a bass player and a drummer). Initially very shy (unlike Park, who explains very calmly that if we don't buy the merchandise, they're screwed), she lets the music do the talking, a very robust hard rock tinged with blues but also with recent metal (Deftones, Cult of Luna) and steeped in dark wave, cataloged as death gospel because this is how all women who use distorted guitars are now defined (a bit like grunge was defined as everything that came from Seattle between the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s). Towards the end she loosens up a bit, and she converses, albeit always sparingly, with the small but participating audience. Eight tracks out of the twelve in the setlist are taken from the new As the Moon Rests, and the rendering is very similar to that of the album; the voice is confirmed to be very beautiful, and holds up perfectly for the entire duration of the concert. She points out that after the concert she will be at the bar counter, available for a chat, and that if someone wants to buy her a drink, she will take Gin and Tonic. See you all in 2023.

Stranger Fruit

Zeal & Ardor + Sooma, Circolo Magnolia (MI), 14 dicembre 2022

And the time comes for Manuel Gagneux's band, one of the most interesting bands that have come to light in recent years. We recall that the musical idea is to unite African-American gospel or spirituals with black metal, and the philosophical/lyrical one is to imagine that "the American slaves had embraced Satan instead of Jesus". As he himself says, after the first three songs of the setlist, tonight they are 4 instead of 6, because the two support singers are ill, and the choice would have been between canceling the concert, or making do with some sampling. The audience reacts warmly to this and to every subsequent interaction from the leader of Zeal & Ardor, who turns out to be very nice, with a new haircut, and gradually, sincerely happy with this concert in Italy and with the response from the audience. Convincing and engaging, they go straight for an abundant hour looting their latest self-titled album, and fishing out tracks from their not very large repertoire. After Devil Is Fine, from their debut album, still an amused Manuel "asks permission" to the audience to skip leaving the stage and coming back for the encore, getting an ovation, and the band continues with four other songs, to conclude with the single not contained in any of their albums Baphomet. The several hundred spectators leave, and if everyone thinks like me, they are totally satisfied.

Death

Dev Death Fest: Full of Hell + Rotten Sound + Celeste + Sanguisugabogg + Selva + Skulld + Fera + þe clovde of vnknowying, 26 novembre 2022, TPO Bologna

To try and feel a little younger, I'm here in front of the Bologna TPO waiting for the gates to open, which happens a little late. Excellent initiative, which gives me the opportunity to listen to some bands I don't know. Slightly late (a delay that will remain a constant, even if it won't get worse), the Italians Skulld open (from what I was able to understand, from Bertinoro in Romagna but with a female singer from Milan), who I listen to inattentively but who seem convincing to me with a death metal that owes a lot to Slayer. After them the Selva from Lodi, of whom I told you, and who I see with pleasure: a cascade of red-hot black metal mixed with screamo. The Americans Sanguisugabogg are excellent in their predictability, massive with a splash of grind. The stage change is accompanied by the project that responds to the name of þe clovde of vnknowying, if I understood correctly from Bologna, an electronic metal veered in a noise sauce, performed with a sampler near the mixer area, after which the French Celeste arrive. Already seen on this occasion, certainly, together with the headliners, the most sought after proposal of the evening, impeccable and very powerful. Another stage change accompanied by another electronic project with Fera, and immediately after it's the turn of the veterans Rotten Sound, from Finland, nice and with a positive attitude and dialogue, more grindcore than death metal, vaguely reminiscent of D.R.I. Close the Full of Hell, also American, masters of powerviolence and hybridizations (grind, sludge, death, noise), excellent. Although the sets are all very short, six hours is a lot: I'm not young anymore, so, in case there was still a need to try it.

For My Crimes

Marissa Nadler + Innerwoud, 20 novembre 2022, Freakout Club Bologna

Molto brava.

Intimate atmosphere, as usual, at the Freakout. Innerwoud opens (note the mistake on the official poster), a solo project by the Belgian double bass player Pieter-Jan Van Assche that is not at all easy to follow, long compositions, rhythmic loops and "atmospheric" digressions of (of course) double bass. About twenty minutes, more would have been really hard. After having presided over the merchandise banquet, responding to anyone, selling vinyls, signing CDs and being quietly photographed together with those present who requested it, Marissa takes the stage together with the now long-time collaborator Milky Burgess (excellent his guitar that every now and then even smells about Mark Knopfler in folk sauce), and Monika Khot (owner of a solo project called Nordra) on bass guitar (which I fall in love with before, while she was warming up the stool of the merchandise counter to Nadler herself), to give to the scarce fifty of present a handful of her songs performed almost perfectly, at the level of the albums. Every so often there is a base of sampled drums, every now and then the two musicians help in the choirs, but the voice of the American female singer-songwriter is beautiful and the concert satisfies great. Very good.

Holocene

Bon Iver + Carm, 5 novembre 2022, Mediolanum Forum, Assago MI

I'll be very brief, after all it's my trend lately. I like Bon Iver, since shortly after their beginnings, an acquaintance pointed them out to me. I have listened to all their records, appreciating them, even if, in my opinion, the pearls of Bon Iver of 2011 are unattainable. In fact, the almost two-hour set of twenty-one tracks, with arrangements that are profoundly different from the originals, does not catch me very much, and to tell you all, I suffer together with Matthew McCaughan on drums, never really free to express himself at best, never called to play one simple 4/4. Great atmosphere, spectacular stage and above all really beautiful lights, visibly satisfied audience (an almost full Forum) as well as the band, Justin Vernon vocals and guitar (who thanks the audience several times), S. Carey drums keyboards and vocals, Andrew Fitzpatrick guitar keyboards vocals, Mike Lewis vocals, bass and saxophone, Jenn Wasner guitar and vocals, in addition to the aforementioned Matthew McCaughan, while I get excited just before and during the encores, with Holocene and Perth, and for the rest I get bored a bit. But I was there.

Photophobic

Crippled Black Phoenix + Møl + Impure Wilhelmina, 2 settembre 2022, Alchemica, Bologna

Small, almost intimate, the Alchemica in Bologna, inside which, on time, the Swiss Impure Wilhelmina open for a short concert where they make you feel a post-hardcore poised between other genres, of good workmanship but without great personality. The small stage does not allow acrobatics, but the band does not seem too accustomed to "give themselves" to the public.
A few more people for the Danes Møl, the band I'm here for. Whimsical right from the clothing choices, as soon as they attack with their lineup, you understand that they have an edge. Their post-black metal blackgaze is as powerful as a steamroller, the error of the girl at the mixer, who, in the context of optimization, also takes care of the (poor) lights, she release an excessive amount of dry ice, causing the fog in the small venue increases the atmosphere, and the fact that singer Kim Song Sternkopf spends practically the entire concert among the few spectators rather than on stage puts the signature underneath a memorable performance, which confirms my impression: they deserve a bigger following.
Closing the evening the British Crippled Black Phoenix, a band active since 2004 made up of eight elements, the only surviving member of the beginnings the guitarist Justin Greaves, authors of a progressive post-rock, at times psychedelic and experimental. The audience remains under 50 in attendance, yet, they too perform as if there were thousands of them under the stage. Interaction with the audience, pointing out their political visions, until the conclusion when Greaves goes off the stage and leaves the guitar to a person from the audience, two singers with voice problems who still give a dignified performance, great professionals. Not my thing, but hats off.

Portatori di bare

Elder + Pallbearer + Irist, 2 ottobre 2022, Bloom, Mezzago (MI)

The Irist plays first, a little late on schedule; their bio says they are from Atlanta, Georgia, but three of them are from South America (Brazil, Chile, Argentina, you can see it by the names): positively surprising, post metal influenced by groove and sludge, with progressive structures.
After them, the band I thought they've would played last but they didn't: Pallbearer from Little Rock, Arkansas. I'll tell you right away: a really intense performance, a modern doom metal and above all, a very powerful sound and almost better than on record. The audience, about a hundred people, is totally involved, dragged into the sound. Mezzago is a long way from my home, but it was worth it.
Last, the Elder, from Massachusetts. A sparkling combination of stoner and progressive, with a hint of doom, which reminds me of none other than Grand Funk. They are also very good technically, but I confess, after a performance and a concert like that of the Pallbearer, it is enough for me, and I leave before the end.

Great Mass of Color

Deafheaven + Sumac, 12 ottobre 2022, Sala Mon, Madrid

Peccato.

Still on almost perfect time, here is the creature of Aaron Turner, with Joe Preston on bass, who as usual replaces Brian Cook when he is on tour with his Russian Circles. On drums the excellent and powerful Nick Yacyshyn. 30 minutes of post-metal tending to noise, almost hypnotic.
The event continues on time (I know, I'm boring, but I'm also elderly, and I'm pleased to note that in recent years, this trend has also been taking hold in Italy), and here is Deafheaven. Essential stage, but a large screen offers really beautiful visuals, which complete the show. The band is musically flawless, too bad that, especially on the three initial songs (Shellstar, In Blur, Great Mass of Color), from the last Infinite Granite, songs that I was very curious to hear live, George Clarke does not guess a note. I look around for confirmation, disappointed and surprised. Fortunately, George himself has not lost his charisma and theatricality on stage, and the audience is in his hands. When the setlist begins to "look to the past" (excerpts from Ordinary Corrupt Human Love, New Bermuda, Sunbather, and the 2014 single From the Kettle Onto the Coil), although there will be two more tracks from Infinite Granite (The Gnashing, Mombasa), and Clarke growls again, Deafheaven are back to being the war machine I remembered. What a pity.

Lost Paradise

Paradise Lost + Hangman's Chair, 14 ottobre 2022, Campus Music Industry, Parma

The opener are the French Hangman's Chair, often on tour with Alcest, but very different in the approach: theirs is a metal that starts from doom and blends with classic metal, stoner and even gothic. By eye, and with the help of their names, they are all or almost all (formation of four, one of the guitarists sings) children or grandchildren of immigrants, which is normal in France and which makes them immediately sympathetic to me. Very powerful sound, not particularly original, but there is worse.
Paradise Lost is something of a doom/goth institution, and on stage it shows. Curious is the fact that for four fifths, the band has remained the same as in 1988, while the drummers have changed continuously. For this tour there is even an Italian drummer, Guido Montanarini, also known as Guido Zima with Strigoi. An impressive setlist, very balanced with five extracts from the last Obsidian, but also eleven other songs chosen from the very long discography of the English band, a crystalline sound in spite of the dark shades, an impeccable singer, Nick Holmes, who often and willingly converses with the public but without ever being exalted, in a very British way. They don't particularly excite me, but I take off my hat anyway.

Shoulders

Thrice + Coheed and Cambria + Touché Amoré, 28 ottobre 2022, Estragon, Bologna

Degna conclusione.

The opening are Touché Amoré from Los Angeles, and it must be said that they are the reason why I'm here tonight. I lost them in 2019 in Milan, before Deafheaven and despite having the ticket, for a story that I don't want to go back to anymore, so it's important for me to close the circle. Scarcely 30 minutes for a whole-hearted performance, during which singer Jeremy Bolm manages to perfectly convey the empathy that he exudes from every action of him. The music is consistent with their path, the aftermath of hardcore leaves room for a sort of intellectual evolution of the emo, and those who are here are fine with them.
After them, Claudio Sanchez's Coheed and Cambria, whose hair I envy tremendously as soon as he shows up on stage. I like them on record, but I admit that they surprise me positively: the first half hour, during which in my opinion they plays their most successful tracks, is really exciting. Then they drop a little, when they wrap themselves on a too progressive structure and less catchy choruses, but obviously the technique is impeccable and the stage presence is like an experienced band.
In closing Thrice, which I had avoided (not knowing them) a few years ago just to attend the performance of Brutus, still here in Bologna. They open early on the program, but a problem with the bass guitar forced them, in practice, to a stop of about 5 minutes which cools the atmosphere a little. Very good even when they dust off some ancient song that recalls their hardcore provenance, compact and measured, the trademark is both the beautiful voice of Dustin Kensrue and the structure of their compositions, fluid to perfection. Worthy conclusion.

The Chant

Gojira + Alien Weaponry + Employed to Serve, 31 luglio 2022, Carroponte, Sesto San Giovanni (MI)

At 9 pm the music spread by the loudspeakers changes. The lights go down and a countdown begins on the giant screen that backs the stage. Here we are. The entry of Mario DuPlantier, a drummer that I personally like very much in terms of style, is greeted by a real ovation, much more loved than the rest of the band, including his brother Joe. Maybe it's just for the Italian name, the fact remains that Mario will put on a show tonight. The setlist is unbalanced (seven extracts from the last Fortitude) towards recent things, but there is no shortage of repechage, even from the first two albums (a medley between Love and Remembrance). The scenic ideas are amusing, the atmosphere is of involvement and fun, empathy from and towards the band, but at the same time we understand that the public shares the message that the four French guys want to convey. The impressive sound, the precision of all four truly remarkable. Towards the end, The Chant is a cathartic embrace, as mentioned, between the band and the approximately 5,000 present. We end up with Mario wrapped in the Italian tricolor, and a couple of children (I can't tell you whose) greeting from the stage together with the band. A memorable concert for a band that has probably reached its zenith.

Idles + Calzeeni, 15 luglio 2022, Parklife Festival Parco d'Europa, Padova

The expected moment for two years: we start with Colossus, and my thoughts immediately go to the Belgian colleague who introduced me to them, almost begging me not only to listen to their music, but to look for them live. And so it is, even if it is difficult to explain what the greatness of the Idles live is. They are not technically phenomena, they do nothing that has not already been heard, nothing that has not already been seen (musicians who play and sing floating above the audience, a great charge on stage even if we are far from the dynamism of the never too regrets Dillinger Escape Plan), but they are, yes, people who firmly believe in certain beliefs, now a little out of fashion, and firmly manifest it, albeit in English, and make themselves understood. Sometimes it's small things, like the blatant call to silence of the "buh" of a part of the audience when they casually mention France during a presentation, by the singer Joe, underlining that there are no borders and that we are all brothers, sometimes real and proper political statements (not only all their lyrics, but I quote for example the introduction of what, years later, is still my favorite song, Danny Nedelko, again by Joe: "This is for all the immigrants!"). In short, their gratitude for being present (both us and them), their sincere empathy, their friendly, often clownish, carefree attitude, their way of dressing that denotes absolute disinterest in any type of fashion, everything, together with their post-punk squared, dynamic, almost to dance on, raw and free-range, but extremely honest, makes them one of the best live bands currently on the square. An hour and a half abundant, you can find the setlist here, of another concert that will make this summer 2022 difficult to forget. Once again, those who weren't there don't know what they missed.
