No pain. The world is a wonderful whisper for those who can listen, if necessary in silence.

I sette desaturati

The Desaturating Seven - Primus (2017)

And so, surprisingly, here's the ninth disc of the legendary Primus. The album is yet another return of Tim Alexander on the drum (back in the line up already from the previous "Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble"), and unlike the previous album, it contains original material (which was missing from "Green Naugahyde" in 2011), but even this record is inspired by a book / fairy tale. We are talking about "The Rainbow Goblins", by the Italian artist Ul de Rico, who define himself as "painter, stage & set designer and translator of emotions".
Les Claypool was used to reading this fairy tale to his children when they were small, and he has always been fascinated by the vibrant artwork and the use of colors. He decided to submit it to Larry LaLonde and Tim Alexander, after which a disc was released; rather classic Primus, as usual rhythmically, quite inspired and pleasing. Justin Chancellor (Tool) as guest in the Goblin Master's vocal "cloths", on the opening track "The Valley". Probably not the record to recommend to anyone who has never heard of Primus, but we can definitely say that the California trio is not yet retired.

Seduzione di massa

Masseduction - St Vincent (2017)

Bellissimo disco.

As usual, it takes time to "access" into the records of Anne Erin Clark aka St. Vincent, here at her fifth album. I fell in love with her music with her third "Strange Mercy", after which I did not like "Love This Giant", her collaboration with David Byrne in 2012, and I could not get in the right mood to understand the previous (to this) "St. Vincent". This time, taking the right time, I'm enjoying listening, and first I have to say that the "futuristic pop" label, is the most appropriate one to try to describe the kaleidoscope of musical influences that, Miss Clark, polistrumentist wit a beautiful and versatile voice, is able to pour into this disc. No doubt, the aforementioned David Byrne is one of those influences, probably still the strongest today, but as experts say, Bowie and Kate Bush are among the most recognizable. But within her 3/4 minutes musical frescoes, there are a lot of things inside. The arrangements are another of her strengths, along with a marked irony. The lyrics, she said, are the most personal, compared to previous records. Jack Antonoff has contributed a great deal to songwriting, and the guest list is very long, all people not too familiar, but definitely good. The prize of the most beautiful song, in my opinion, is divided between "Happy Birthday, Johnny" and "New York". Very beautiful disc.

Gomorrah returns (and will continue for another two seasons, it seems) obviously, after the great season's success, and continues in the only way he could move on. Recalling many real plots, we witness the shaky beginning of an alliance between ex-submissives, with as many natural betrayal, double games, conspiracy, sub-plots, and the organization of the ex-boss's revenge. Very predictable but well-made, sometimes monodimensional, always interesting the dualism between Don Pietro and Genny. The acting is good, but you can not forget that we are in Italy, and that's why that more often is not so good. In shortly the third season.

Sognatore di eventi futuri

Berdreyminn - Solstafir (2017)

Decisamente interessanti.

I have to say very honestly, that the more I listen to the new, and sixth album for the Icelandic Sólstafir ("crepuscular rays" in Icelandic), the more I regret not have given them a chance in the past. Among other things, the motivation for which I decided to listen to them came from my latest interest for Myrkur, and the fact that I will soon see her in concert, but she is not the headliner, but the Icelanders themselves. So, taking some definitions that the specialized press used to try to explain the sound of the Sólstafir: "Sounds like The Hellacopters if they went to art school and did a lot of Valium"; "Imagine if Nachtmystium, Alice in Chains, and Neurosis got hammered while listening to Entombed's DCLXVI: To Ride Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth – it would sound something like this"; "Sigur Rós goes metal!". Here, I'm sure you did not understand much, but in fact, just listening to this new record, it makes sense that this band is difficult to frame. Atmospheres dilated and tending to epic, strange feeling listening to sing in a less musical language like Icelandic, rock bases and more death 'n' roll than metal, non - orthodox but rough sounds, to the point to earn many listeners, in the metal field, but above all, in the post metal one (so much so that they publish for Season of Mist), sudden changes of rhythm that completely modifies the atmosphere of the tracks. Definitely interesting.

La torre

The Tower - Motorpsycho (2017)

I confess, it took me many years to appreciate the Norwegian band. You just need to compare my "Heavy Metal Fruit" review of 2010, with that of the penultimate "Here Be Monsters" of 2016. I remember passionate discussions with members of the band which I played around 94/95, about "Timothy's Monster" (triple LP of 1994). As it is, last month came out "The Tower", which should be their 17th "long-lasting" record in the studio, after drummer change: Kenneth Kapstad leaves, Tomas Jarmyr jump in. The result is, once again, almost unbelievable if you think this band has been releasing records since 1991: a powerful, compact, relentless album, less introspective than the previous one, but a record where you can recognize both their trademark, and their love for prog rock and for psychedelic rock. The Motorpsycho are one of those bands that can actualize this kind of influences, play devastatingly, and prove to be convincing. I'm not listing the tracks, because really, to me, they are one of the nicest of the other. As I said on other occasions, but this time it is a compliment, a disc where you can lose yourself, literally.

Gigli

Lilies - Melanie De Biasio (2017)

She is certainly not a prolific artist, Belgian De Biasio: debut (A Stomach is Burning) in 2007, second album (No Deal) in 2013, one EP with a single track (Blackened Cities, very beautiful) in 2016, and now a new, third album, also this, rather short. Short, but beautiful, basic as its creation (the singer and flutist wanted to retire herself, without band, with her cheap microphone, her computer with her Pro-Tools, and "return to the seed of creativity" - listen to "Sitting in the Stairwell" to believe her), but fascinating by the mastery of songwriting, ranging from gospel to trip-hop, maintains a standard jazz base, she colors everything of dark as the story she tells in the lyrics, and the result is at the same time classic and modern. Without virtuosity, no instrumental or vocal, De Biasio is one of those artists who reconcile you with the art of music, and remind us of how simple and beautiful it can be.

Le mie Americhe

Mis Américas, Vol 1/2 - Kevin Johansen + The Nada (2016)

Quando canta pezzi come 5 in the Morning (The Great Divide), Tiene Algo (Interesting Little Thing), Life is Killing Me, Amor Telepathic Love, se non fosse per qualche titolo o qualche inserto di testo in castigliano, nessuno penserebbe che il ragazzo abbia radici argentine.

I have already talked about Kevin Piojo Johansen several times (named Piojo for the likeness with the soccer player Claudio López), and as I always say, it's a shame that in Europe there are few connoisseurs. Already from his records, he shows the honesty and love for the music of this artist, and the mastery of all American musical genres. I tend to repeat myself, but it seems as if Kevin, born in Alaska by a Argentinian mother and an American father, who lived in Alaska, Colorado, California, New York, and then in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, has made of incorporate the Latin American and North American music genres in his music, his mission. And what is beautiful is that it fits perfectly. When he sings songs such as "5 in the Morning (The Great Divide)", "Tiene Algo (Interesting Little Thing)", "Life is Killing Me", "Amor Telepathic Love", if it were not for some title or some text insertion in Castilian, no one would think that the guy have Argentine roots. When, for example, he sings tracks like the funny "Oh, What a Waist (Pero qué cintura!)", a track with Son's rhythm dedicated to Barranquilla, Colombia, it is understood that "sudaca" blood is flowing through his veins. Delightful the opener "Es como el día", where he duets with her older daughter Miranda (while at backing vocals there is also his second daughter, Kim Ema), but the whole album, which also sees interesting participations (Miss Bolivia, Sebastián Schachtel , Javier Casalla, Rod Hohl, Robert Bonhomme, Leo Sidran, Marcos Mundstock of the magnificent Les Luthiers, with a funny spoken word on "La Bach-Chata (Habladurías)", where there is also the voice of Palito Ortega, Aldo Asenjo, Arnaldo Antunes, Kanaku y El Tigre, Ricardo Mollo), is the usual, marvelous journey along the two Americas, as the title says ("my Americas", with the usual play of words - see the cover). This is also an artist that could serve you to try to "enter" Latin American music.

Tempi duri

Rough Times - Kadavar (2017)

Disco estremamente godibile, e massimo rispetto.

I "met" Kadavar with their previous album "Berlin", now the German power trio arrived today to the fourth album, and it is to be said (even seeing their promotional photos), very quietly, they do not really want to know how to come out of the seventies. No problem: we listen to them anyway, and always with great pleasure. Yes, because if you love that time, but you still try not to play as one cover band or, worse, as bad caricatures, you can definitely find an audience that follows you and listens to you: the Swedish Graveyard is a proven test. Full, dense, powerful sound, sonsgs inspired from the big hard rock bands of the golden era (enjoy, while you are listening, ask yourself who are reminding to you now, and then after a while), but also, still at least 40 years old, the ones less tough and more melodic. Extremely enjoyable album, and maximum respect.

Polvere

Ash - Ibeyi (2017)

Second album, after two years and a half away from the debut with their same name, for the Franco-Cuban duo (with Nigerian and Venezuelan origins) composed by female twins Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz. Pitchfork write that they reminds, amongst others, Solange Knowles, to me, instead, they let come into my mind the Zap Mama, but the Diaz twins are a beautiful musical journey through world music and girl power (in "No Man Is Big Enough for My Arms", one of the two spoken-word of the album, uses a speech by Michelle Obama). Beautiful, thinking, very gifted, thinking that they have "only" 22 years almost put fears in you. Heterogeneous but interesting contributions (Kamasi Washington, Meshell Ndegeocello, Mala Rodriguez, Chilli Gonzales), an intense and refined record, stunningly confirms that two stars are born and are shining.

Essere l'unica

Dua Lipa - Dua Lipa (2017)

Let's consider that after Rita Ora, finding out that Dua Lipa, model before being a singer, is Kosovar / Albanian origin (though born in London, by two Kosovar parents, and then returned to Kosovo for a few years when she had already 13 years old), the tour in Pristina come back on the priority. That being said, let's talk about music.
The genre is not exactly what I love most, probably if the Manowar heard that I've been listening also Dua Lipa, they probably sacrifice me on the altar of True Metal, but, invited by my friend Filo and supported by Beach, I started to collect information, and then I started to listen. Well, although part of it can be said that it's a collection of her singles, published from 2015 to date, on this record there is not a bad song even paying. And yes, we agree, it is pop, but what class, and what a voice (tell me if, on Thinking 'Bout You, don't remind you Amy Winehouse)! It is also worth noting that the young lady puts hand in writing on all the tracks (I guess on the lyrics), and of course there are important guests (Chris Martin in duo "Homesick", and Grimes on the bonus track "Dreams", but these are just the most famous, at least for me), as well as an endless array of producers, songwriters and backing vocals. Of all the influences that Dua (among other things, art daughter, her father, Dukagjin Lipa, is a rock singer, seems quite famous at home) cites, it feels strong that of Pink.

Il racconto dell'ancella

The Handmaid's Tale - Di Bruce Miller - Stagione 1 (10 episodi; Hulu) - 2017

Margaret Atwood's Best Seller (1986), a prize-winning book, already a film and theater opera, is now one of the most exciting and disturbing TV series. The Handmaid's Tale won a lot of Emmys at the latest edition. It reminds us that fundamentalism, extremism, slavery in modern times, excesses to which it can lead to follow a book considered sacred to the letter. The side effects are, among other things, extremely current: the extremism generated and resulting from the foundation of the imaginary Republic of Gilead, theonomic military dictatorship, on the remains of the US disbanded by a civil war and the subsequent government, causes many refugees, citizens that flee to Canada: what happens across the border will remind you of European topicality (on the contrary). Not to be missed.

Tessuto tre volte

Thrice Woven - Wolves in the Throne Room (2017)

The Old One Are With Us).

And so, with their sixth album, the band from Olympia, Washington, now a staunchly established trio, with the official entrance of guitarist Kody Keyworth (in addition to Nathan and Aaron Weaver brothers, vocals / guitars and drums / synthesizers, creators and founders of the band), returns to black metal (in their case, preceded by the adjective "atmospheric", and I must say rightly) after the ambient parenthesis with Celestite, in 2014. Of course, if you're not really a fan, you do not have to wait the classic continuous blast beat, and even endless drones. Just think that the record is made up of five tracks, two of which are hosted by Anna Von Hausswolff ("Born from the Serpent's Eye", "Mother Owl, Father Ocean"), and one sees Steve Von Till to voice and acoustic guitar ("The Old One Are With Us"). The Wolves in the Throne Room are now an institution of extreme music, for technical expertise, but above all for the creativity they have been able to infuse to a genre that tends to fall back on itself. There is epic and meaningful folk sense of respect for Mother Earth, biblical brutality put into music, and a controlled aggressiveness that makes this record, the latest product that shows how black metal has become more art than entertainment.

Non uniforme

Ununiform - Tricky (2017)

I read complete controversial comments on this thirteenth disc of one of the founders of the trip hop, but I think the guy (he's 49 today...) of Knowle West, Bristol, still has ideas for sale, and is in great shape as a composer. Helped on the sounds (co-engineer) no less than by Jay-Z, Tricky surrounds himself with beautiful female voices (Mina Rose, Avalon Lurks, Terra Lopez, Francesca Belmonte and the inevitable ex-girlfriend Martina Topley-Bird), of a couple of Russian rappers (Scriptonite and Smoky Mo, the album was originally conceived in Moscow), it also features reserve a good treatment to Asia Argento (backing vocals on "Wait for Signal") and cover "Doll Parts" (simply rewritten as Doll) of the Hole, over 9 original tracks ("New Stole" with Belmonte it's a remake of "Stole", written by the femal singer for her debut in 2015, produced and co-wrote, on many tracks, by Tricky), plus a couple of interludes ("Obia Intro" and the irresistible "Bang Boogie"). What comes out is, in my opinion, a very good record, where Tricky keeps that distinctive sounds, dark and claustrophobic, but proves to be able to keep up with the times, and to be able to embed in any kind of influence.

Cinque

V - The Horrors (2017)

The Southend-on-Sea Britons, to arrive at the fifth album, went along a track that took them from the punk-rock garage to a sort of fascinating ambient-pop, which of course brings back all their other influences (shoegaze, goth, even the Manchester trip-hop). V, released from a few weeks, with a cover that has generated some controversy of plagiarism (cover by Erik Ferguson, who was accused of plagiarism toward Jesse Kanda's work), and a bunch of songs that even remind the Simple Minds (listen to "World Below" and tell me what to remind you ... if you are between the age of 45 and 55) or the Human League, and in any case all that post new wave of the 1980's, naturally grafted on all the aforementioned influences. Honestly, they do not excel me particularly, and I find rather flat listening, not ugly but without any particular spike.

Sotto copertura

Under Cover - Motorhead (2017)

I hate intensive exploitation of the dead, thing which heirs and record company, on the contrary, they love. The exploitation of Lemmy's death has already begun the past year with the live record "Clean Your Clock", of which we will talk later on, and continues with this collection of covers, containing 11 tracks, of which 8 have already been released on various tribute records ("Hell Bent Forever", "Twisted Forever", "Metallic Attack") or their own records ("We Are Motorhead", "March or Die", "Bastards", "Bad Magic"), one "half" unreleased (an alternate version of "Starstruck", compared to that published on "This Is Your Life" tribute to Ronnie James Dio of 2014, but always with Saxon's singer Biff Byford), and two totally unreleased tracks: Bowie's "Heroes", and Ramones' "Rockaway Beach". Apart from the chills of hearing a signature song (not just of an artist, but perhaps of a generation) of a sacred monster re-played by other sacred monsters (albeit from a niche, but a niche though rather wide), the album, though enjoyable, adds nothing to the story of Motorhead, but remembers all of their limitations, along with their merits: confined within a well-defined genre, a genre of which, however, they had contributed enormously to its own definition.

Tutta la luce sopra

All the Light Above It All - Jack Johnson (2017)

We love Jack Johnson, and not just because the legend wants he saved Eddie Vedder from drowning (actually it does not seem true, Ed risked drowning while he was in canoe with Jack's father, and was rescued by local fishermen), but because he is nice, he does not appear in public very much, he is a persuasive environmentalist and makes cute songs. This time, with the cover of the album, he overpassed himself: he picked up some of the plastic that the North Pacific Gyre accumulates on the Hawaiian beaches, and made up a work of art (also used for video). The lyrics are inspired by Trump's selection ("My Mind Is for Sale", "Gather"), and against his fixaction to build walls, and, of course, about unlimited pollution and global warming (Fragments, Subplots). In short, laudable, if not for years, he always makes the same disc, the same songs, the same melodies, the same guitar riffs. Slow attempts to do something different on "My Mind Is for Sale" and "Gather", but for fans, do not be afraid, nothing too far from what JJ has got to used to.

Prigioniero

Prisoner - Caparezza (2017)

Seventh album for Caparezza. The notes tell us it is the result of a "deep inner crisis" experienced by the artist, and Michele Salvemini (Caparezza) had fun, playing on dualism between 7 (the letters of his name, Michele) and 9 (the letters of his stage name, Caparezza), which we find also in the album title, also find subtitles for each track of the disc, one of 7 and one of 9 letters. The lyrics then follow a concept that starts from the crisis, during which Capa reflected on his condition of imprisonment of his mental dimension, and walked along a path of guilty (crime, punishment, yard time, revolt, escape, lam, and other steps in between). So with the usual commitment, but without losing the smile, mood suspendend between fun, jokes and anger, and at musical level, it moves on the good rap to the usual good dose of rock, provided by the excellent backing band .
Guests of a certain level: John De Leo, DMC, Max Gazzé, for a record that reminds us that Caparezza is alive and struggling with us. Too bad, at least in my humble opinion, it seems to me a bit lying on a standard. The comparison, for example, with "Il sogno eretico" (without going too far back in time), even at the musical level, seems pitiless, though personally, I keep the highest respect for the Apulian rapper.

Dico a una mosca

I Tell A Fly - Benjamin Clementine (2017)

Affascinante.

Let's tell the truth, music always needed such characters. I do not want to go too far, but have a look into the web and read the story of the life of this 28-year-old native of Crystal Palace, London. Fascinating.
The first time I listened to his music, with the previous "At Least For Now", I thought of Antony Hegarty, probably because of the propensity to the almost theatrical atmospheres. But I must say that by listening a bit more in-depth to this brand new "I Tell A Fly", there are a lot of beautiful things, influences of the most disparate, unusual, beautiful songs with non-orthodox structures, and of course, incredibly elaborate texts.
There is really everything in the music and in Benjamin Sainte-Clémentine's approach, as some great music critics and some great musicians (David Byrne, Paul McCartney) notes. Vaguely Rufus Wainwright, a very strong sense of grandeur, Nina Simone, Léo Ferré, Edith Piaf, touches of piano inspired by Satie and Debussy, but not only; influences ranging from Italian songwriters to soul music, operetta to great French chansonniers, from great classical singers to Nick Cave and Tom Waits. And then, the literary and poetic influences, he, formerly homeless but avid reader since childhood. And a personality that, without a doubt, does not go unnoticed.
An album definitely far from pop, very interesting, by an artist which, in the future, will be very famous.

Il filo del rasoio

The Razor's Edge - AC/DC (1990)

Tornando alla musica, oltre ai singoli già citati, buone Fire Your Guns, Rock Your Heart Out, The Razors Edge, Got You by the Balls.

A few weeks ago, while waiting for the Arch Enemy to set foot on the Cvetlicarna stage in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the volume of the speakers, that were spreading obviously heavy rock music, were increased, and "Thunderstruck" by ACDC started, and given the reaction of the public present, similar to the one I watched in 1984 (that time, the trigger cause was Touch too Much) during the waiting for an Iron Maiden plus Motley Crue concert, I decided to come back and re-listen "The Razors Edge", the album from which the song is taken, and then writing about it.
ACDC's eleventh international album, the album in question comes after some disappointing albums, a drop in popularity, and various vicissitudes, and brings back the band to the tops, driven by a series of irresistible singles, the first of which was indeed "Thunderstruck", followed by "Moneytalks" and later on by "Are You Ready". The record is actually rocky like some predecessors, and demonstrates the return to a convincing songwriting. The work of Angus and Malcolm on the guitars is remarkable, with some pearls (once again, Thunderstruck's initial riff, as Angus tells, arriving by chance while he was fuckin' around on the six strings), as did Brian's voice. The drummer is the veteran Chris Slade, who will be reunited with the band in recent years, replacing the resigned Simon Wright (who switched to the band of Dio), and everything goes smooth, completing the rhythm section with the reliable Cliff Williams.
Some extra curiosity: the title is not a mistake (razor's), but a figure of speech by Britain peasants when, on a beautiful sunny day, suddenly black clouds appear on the horizon. Angus declared that he looked like a great title at the time, and was representing the uncertainty of world order, even though everyone thought that, after the fall of the Berlin Wall's, the life ahead would have been "fun and games, and party every night."
"Mistress for Christmas" was written thinking of Donald Trump, and the dualism between Ivanka and then Donald's lover.
Returning to the music, in addition to the aforementioned singles, good songs also "Fire Your Guns", "Rock Your Heart Out", "The Razors Edge", "Got You by the Balls".

Groot-Bijgaarden (Belgio) - Settembre 2017

Parcheggio, controlli, spuntino, attesa, imbarco, volo e sonnolenza. In momenti come questi io e L. ci rendiamo conto quanto siamo stanchi, veramente tanto.

Some Heavy Ocean - Emma Ruth Rundle (2014)

There is nothing to do, artists like these, like Emma Ruth Rundle, you can only envy them, of that positive envy, the one that maybe makes you run 1,200 kilometers to see her in concert (this is the goal). Just in preparation for this small achievement, listening to the repertoire available as a soloist, beyond the marvelous "Marked To Death", you might come across this "Some Heavy Ocean" of 2014, which as its following, contains a handful of small masterpieces of musical writing, such as "Arms I Know So Well", "Shadows of My Name", "Haunted Houses" and "Run Forever", and other obscure jewels such as "Living With the Black Dog". The voice, dense with fabulous shades and at the same time carrying a minimum of existential suffering, incospicuous arrangements, but in the right place at the right time, the good guitar plots, and, sorry if I repeat, songs written so flawless. Do not let it run away, at least as listening.

Muse

Musas - Natalia Lafourcade (2017)

I mentioned Natalia Lafourcade just talking of a Kevin Johansen album, so I took advantage of the release of her seventh studio album for talking you about her. I imagine that there is some fear among you, compared to Latin American music, and since I do not have this fear, I will take the responsibility to urge you to dare. So long ago I told you how, an old record of Gloria Estefan opened up new horizons to me, just like my travels. Here, you could start from this Mexican singer's operation, for your personal trip to Latin American music.
Accompanied by the Los Macorinos guitar duo (Juan Carlos Allende and Miguel Pena), Natalia, after paying tribute to Agustín Lara in 2012 with "Mujer Divina", puts in music, on one hand for a tribute to not just Mexican artists (still Lara with "Te Vi Pasar", another Mexican like Roberto Cantoral with "Soy Lo Prohibido", Cuban Frank Domìnguez with "Tu Me Acostumbraste", the great Chilean Violeta Parra with "Que He Sacado Con Quererte", and the Venezuelan Simòn Diaz with "Tonada De Luna Llena"), on the other hand, five other tracks, three completely written by herself and two with collaborations of promising young artists (David Aguilar, Gustavo Guerrero), which are not screeching, on the contrary, they are up to the old classics. The cover of "That's Amore", renamed "Son Amores", a great one, and a instrumental entirely made of the work of Los Macorinos, "Vals Poético". The participation of the legendary Omara Portuondo on the song of Domìnguez is the icing on the cake, but from the overall performance you will understand how gifted in terms of talent, songwriting and sensibility, this still very young female Mexican artist.
