No pain. The world is a wonderful whisper for those who can listen, if necessary in silence.

Undoubtedly, the skill of the two directors, is to make extremely interesting and appealing, a sad, ruthless story, which has as protagonists two people from the extremely low IQ, coming from a family of the underclass of the profound American province (we could certainly define them white trash), and above all, a story that runs more and more between legal technicalities. It's a series that requires attention to the viewer, but undoubtedly, is intriguing. And, given that the two protagonists are still in prison, we will probably also have a third season.

Schiavi del regno delle ombre

Slaves of the Shadow Realm - Legion of the Damned (2019)

Seventh record for the Dutch band Legion of the Damned, active since far (by now) 1992, with the name Occult (five records under that name). Despite the seniority, the band plays a death/thrash metal as if we were still in the early 90s, or at the end of the 80s. For someone, it can also be an incentive to listen it, to be clear. To make it very short, we could define them with a sound between Slayer and Kreator, obviously with a production and a recording worthy of modern times. In 2019, this is a record to which I personally can dedicate a maximum of two round of listen, but to be honest, as I listened to it, I remembered very clearly that (again) in the early 90s this was exactly the music I wanted to play.

Campeggio

Camping US - Sviluppato da Lena Dunham e Jenni Konner - Stagione 1 (8 episodi; HBO) - 2018

Remake of the homonymous English series, with a cast partially guessed, this series that I honestly hope will not be renewed, extremes all the "pathologies" of the works of Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner. It makes you laugh, above all of the behavioral baseness of the American middle class, but the spectator get tired after very little for the caricaturity of the characters.

Wanderer - Cat Power (2018)

I am surprised by myself, but I do not find any of my reviews on Charlyn Marie "Chan" Marshall aka Cat Power. I've been watching and listening her for years, I saw her in concert a long time ago (I even met her outside an ice-cream parlor near the Stazione Leopolda in Florence), and she always left me with the impression of a boundless but crazed talent. This is also genius. She has not had an easy life, and now that she is 47 years old, she probably managed to find a certain balance. This album, rather explicit title, released in October 2018 (and therefore for the series "what I missed"), is a very very beautiful album, extremely mature, which perhaps demonstrates what I'm trying to imagine, and that I wrote a little earlier. Wanderer is a beautiful record of folk blues, where Chan manages to keep at the same time very minimal, but also to experiment with great success. It happens with the autotune of the beautiful Horizon, with the single Woman sung together with Lana Del Rey, with the Latin echoes of Me Voy (Latin echoes that are also present in In Your Face), with the mastery with which she takes possession of What the World Needs Now of Bacharach, with the blues scattered throughout the album, with the extraordinary cover of Stay by Rihanna. It's really true, as Jayson Greene says on Pitchfork about this cover, that "I want you to stay" sung by Cat Power, seems to be a completely different phrase than the one sung by Rihanna. This is genius. This is talent.

Black Mirror: Bandersnatch - Scritto da Charlie Brooker, diretto da David Slade (2018)

1984, UK.

Let's face it without turning around too much: this time Brooker dared a lot, and it was really brave. The idea of the unique interactive episode, with a whole series of choices, developments and endings, is wonderful. The story, however you turn it around, whatever your choices are, is probably one of the weakest views in Black Mirror. That being said, I really enjoyed Will Poulter as Colin Ritman.

Zola Jesus, Sfinks 700, Sopot PL, 16 novembre 2018

Here she is, on stage, together with two musicians, Alex DeGroot on guitar and Louise Woodward on violin. Nina is dressed in dark. It starts with Veka, and of course, the extracts from the last Okovi will be the master. I am struck by what the lighting technician can do with so little: the show is completed and enriched. After Soak arrive the first two steps back, with the excellent Dangerous Days and the beautiful Hikikomori. At the end of this first block, Nina begins to dialogue with the public, and surprises me. I was expecting a really shy girl, and instead comes out a chick who could do the stand up comedian. Of course, it is helped by chance and by the public. She starts by saying goodbye, saying that places like these remind you a little of her roots (Ukraine, Slovenia), and above all, when he comes here she gets binges of her favorite food, dumplings. Here in Poland, pierogi are the national specialty, in many versions. That said, when Nina utters dumplings, something happens that gives rise to an irresistible theater. From the very first row, a couple waves: they brought home-made pierogi, in a container, knowing the singer's passion. She notices, takes them, thanks, and realizes that on the cap, there is the list of ingredients. At the end of the list there is: "love". The audience, together with her, was amused and moved. She begins a series of deadly jokes about the fact that she will now have to close the concert as quickly as possible, to eat them, and other fun things. With an admirable transparency, Nina closes this parenthesis confessing that now it will be very difficult to introduce the next song in the setlist: Witness, written for a person very close to her, who tried to commit suicide some time ago. A very sad song. But pull straight, and the version that comes out is amazing. The voice of this girl is beautiful, you all know it already, but sometimes it is good to remember it, and listen to it live is an excellent reminder. Continue through beautiful versions of Clay Bodies, Wiseblood, Remains, and you get to what is perhaps my favorite, Vessel. I take it as a gift for having come a long way, and I reflect on the fact that Nina Danilova, if she only wanted success, would be put in the hands of a curator of look, made a couple of touches of plastic surgery, then in the hands of a producer/DJ, and she would have turned out 2/3 discs full of singles, and made a lot of money. Instead, tonight is here in front of a public, adoring, but that could comfortably enter a medium-sized pizzeria. It follows Exhumed, a small pause, and closes with Skin, for which Nina goes down in the audience, to sing it among us.

Phoenix - Rita Ora (2018)

I like Rita Ora (Rita Sahatçiu) just only for being a Kosovar (she was born in Pristina, but she emigrated to UK at the age of one), as well as being undeniably a beautiful girl, who came to success despite her family was forced into exile by Kosovo in England, due to the Serbian persecution of the Albanian ethnic group in Kosovo. It almost seems that the Albanian ethnic group has an edge in the field of dance-pop: she, Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha, besides being all very nice, are talented in writing songs that prints on your head, and also to surround theirself with capable collaborators.
This Phoenix is for Rita Ora the second album, sees collaborations with Avicii, Liam Payne, Rudimental, Julia Michaels, even Girls is sung by her, Cardi B, Bebe Rexha and Charli XCX, and an endless series of songwriters including Ed Sheeran. The result is pleasant but made of highs and lows; among the most notable moments, First Time High and Let You Love Me.

Damned If You Do - Metal Church (2018)

Every time I hear the name Metal Church I smile, because they opened the concert in which I saw the Metallica for the first time, and we entered in the then PalaTrussardi when the band of Kurdt Vanderhoof (guitar and composition) had already begun its performance from a while, because the bus driver (organized by the Florentine Controradio) had initially brought us to PalaLido (risking lynching). That said, I had no idea that they still existed; I then documented, and I see that their story is a bit the story of many rock or metal bands formed in the 80s. Two breakups, two reunions, dead components, but in the end, always the same desire to play. Of course, the style has not made great strides, even if listening to it today, the thrash metal of the Metal Church sounds like a classic heavy metal, even if perfectly executed, with all the things and their clichés in the right place.

Knowing What You Know Now - Marmozets (2018)

Rebecca Becca Macintyre, vocals, Sam Mcintyre, vocals and guitar, Josh Macintyre, drums, plus Jack Bottomley, guitar and Will Bottomley, bass and vocals. They put together in 2007, they released a bunch of EPs between 2009 and 2014, their debut album in 2014, The Weird and Wonderful Marmozets, and this, their second Knowing What You Know Now is one of the simplest and the same time exciting and direct things I've been listen in 2018. 12 tracks, one better than the other, for 45 minutes of rock music and excellent composition, led by an ultra-versatile voice. A reminiscence of a punk attitude, of which, probably, the guys did not even know anything, but most of all a songwriting as they would have a thirty year experience doing that. Not to be missed.

Come Over When You're Sober Pt 2 - Lil Peep (2018)

Gustav Elijah Ahr, aka Lil Peep (from the nickname given to him by his mother), was born in 1996 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, raised in Long Island, New York, and was found dead on his tour bus, November 15, 2017, in Tucson , Arizona. Emo-rap exponent, he also worked as a model, and fought for all of his short life against depression and addiction to drugs (the cause of death was a deadly mix of drugs and medicines). Before his death he was able to record two albums, one released in 2017 and this, posthumously, that demonstrate his skill, and that stand as one of the different links between metal, hip hop and electronic music. In some moments, listening to Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 2, I had the distinct impression of listening to P.O.D. outtakes, in acoustic, but particularly inspired.
The atmosphere is extremely relaxed, contrary to that of a lot of rap, and a tangible atmosphere of sadness and nihilism goes through all 38 minutes of the album, giving it an undeniable charm. As undeniable is the beauty of all the tracks contained here.

Incendio doloso

Arson - Harakiri for the Sky (2018)

Fourth album for the Austrian (from Salzburg) band (actually, officially a duo, Matthias Sollak aka MS, bass, guitars and drums, and Michael V. Wahntraum aka JJ, which uses three collaborators for live concerts, but on the album, the drums is of the former Decapitated, Kerim Krimh Lechner), a band that starts from black metal and incorporates elements of post hardcore and post metal, coming to propose a subgenre that someone labeled as Atmospheric black metal (or Blackgaze, someone in fact brings them closer to Alcest, quite correctly). Aggressive but orderly approach, unlike many other bands of the genre, research of the melody especially by the guitars, which in many passages recall classic heavy metal, powerful mid-tempos, also use of keyboards, piano, acoustic guitars. Long tracks, between eight and ten minutes (except the bonus track, Manifesto, cover of the Graveyard Lovers, with the female voice of Silvi Bogojevic), all of them very good, even if, wanting to find a flaw, the tracks tend to look a bit similar to each others.

Un uomo paziente

A Patient Man - Cult Leader (2018)

As promised, here is the latest review of my top 10 of 2018. The Cult Leader is a band that comes from hardcore punk and has its roots in crust punk, coming from Salt Lake City, Utah, and formed in 2013 following the dissolution of the Gaza, went to pieces, we can say so, following the accusations of rape, addressed to the then Gaza singer, by a woman. The singer has always denied the accusations, the matter has been solved privately, but this fact caused tensions between Jon Parkin and the rest of the band: first he was ousted by the band, after which the remaining three members decided to dissolve the band itself and start from scratch. Bassist Anthony Lucero switched to vocals, Casey Hansen and Mike Mason remained on their respective instruments, drums and guitar, and Sam Richards was recruited to the bass. This is how the Cult Leader were born: with two EPs, a first LP entitled Lightless Walk of 2015, a contract with Deatwish Inc. of Jacob Bannon (Converge), and, from November 2018, this second exceptional album called A Patient Man, produced, as the previous (I know you have already guessed), by Kurt Ballou (Converge).
The album starts firing, remembering many things of the first Converge, and then, at the end of Isolation in the Land of Milk and Honey, it slows down, to lead to To: Achlys, a track of atmosphere where the voice of Lucero inspired (my) definition of "John Grant outtakes borrowed to death metal", a track that promises to remain in history. The surprises do not stop here, because A World of Joy, another track where the band seems to want to cross the crooners, the Joy Division, all the shoegaze of the Universe, played by a band that knows how to stomp hard. In fact, the last 20 seconds are a kind of massacre. They return to heavier sounds with three more tracks broken-legs, up to the song that gives the title to the record, A Patient Man, over seven minutes of a kind of asymmetric and charming ballad, with a lyrics to tear the skin from the body. It seems impossible to do better, but here is the conclusion with The Broken Right Hand of God (a title already in itself ambitious), which tries, in my opinion succeeding, to merge the two types of approach to the form-song of the Cult Leader. An apotheosis shoegaze-dark-black-sludge-post-metal, as beautiful as a rough diamond.
The desire to experiment dates back to previous records (use of the violin in the cover of You Are Not My Blood by Mark Kozelek and Desertshore on the EP Useless Animal, much appreciated, track that pushed the band to continue and incorporate other stylistic elements in their sound), and the aforementioned voice of Anthony, cavernous to infinity in the hardcore tracks, but capable of unprecedented depth in "cleaner" songs, combined with the technical mastery of the other three musicians and the wide variety of influences, allows the band to wander and navigate into the sounds, creating not one, but two trademarks (fast and hard tracks with growl voice and slowed-down songs with a clean voice), which let us glimpse infinite potential, but that already with this record, take your breath away. Understood: do not let them unheeded.

Contro

If it is true that the Colle der Fomento, formed in 1994 (for a couple of years Piotta also took part), are one of the historic Italian hip hop bands, it goes without saying that even the Italian hip hop has a long tradition. Despite this, this excellent Adversus, released in November 2018, is "only" the fourth album of the Romans, a fact that probably shows the difficulty of making hip hop of a certain type (conscious hip hop). That said, and as anticipated, the record is really nice, and it's a pleasure to listen to it. Bases that look up to jazz and folk, a variety that displaces, surprises and intrigues, I would dare to say refined, lyrics more reflective that militant, the usual mix of Italian and Roman dialect, for a nice enveloping flow. Good, and I would say targeted, collaborations: Kaos One (Sergio Leone, Miglia e promesse), Bassi Maestro (Nostargia), Roy Paci (Polvere). A record worthy of other stages.

El ciudadano ilustre

El ciudadano ilustre - Di Gastón Duprat e Mariano Cohn (2016)

A very interesting film, this of the couple Duprat / Cohn (with a screenplay by Andrés Duprat, brother of one of the directors, as often happens), who manages to be deeply self-critical about the Argentine character, and at the same time to denounce the unforgettable Argentine frustration for having expressed great writers without ever having had the Nobel Prize for Literature. Exciting and intense the interpretation of the protagonist by Oscar Martínez, Argentine actor of cinema, theater and TV of long experience, which precisely for this film won the Volpi Cup in Venice 2016. You laugh and think.

Io, Daniel Blake

I, Daniel Blake - Di Ken Loach (2016)
Giudizio sintetico: da vedere (4/5)

Newcastle, UK.

Cast straordinario e lacrime (insieme all'incazzatura) assicurate.

And there's nothing to do, the coupled Ken Loach / Paul Laverty continues to reach goals, as precise as a Swiss clock and sticking like a knife in butter, this 2016 film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2016, the Audience Award in Locarno 2016, and a BAFTA in 2017. Prizes aside, the film is of a disarming simplicity, but of an alarming depth: if it is possible that in 2016 (or 2018) a capable person, sensitive and willing, can being harassed by a State, like Daniel Blake, it means that we have done everything wrong. And that instead, Loach and Laverty have done everything right. Extraordinary cast, and tears (together with the rage) assured.

Amor Vincit Omnia

Following the news that Netflix had canceled the series at the end of the second season, the grievances and the love of the fan on the social networks, finally convinced the network itself, to give the ok to the production of a maxi final episode of two hours and a half. Lana Wachowski, Mitchell and Hemon, then began to write this pyrotechnical, complicated and extremely twisted final episode, which is the mirror of the entire series. Surreal, triumphantly kitsch, naive but as always, full of love for life and above all, for every diversity. If you followed Sense8, you know what I'm talking about, and you know you'll end up crying this time too. It will remain in our hearts.

Jahr Null

The Man in the High Castle - di Frank Spotniz - Stagione 3 (10 episodi; Amazon Studios) - 2018

The dystopian/alternative reality of The Man in the High Castle continues its slow, inexorable, surreal narrative sometimes, but also tremendously fascinating: I am always attracted by the historical narrative, even if full of inaccuracies, think about when I meet a story that imagine if the history would have taken a different turn, even completely opposite to the real one. Always excellent cast, we await the fourth season with interest.

My Turn

House of Cards - Di Beau Willimon - Stagione 6 (8 episodi; Netflix) - 2018

House of Cards arrives at the final season exhausted (Willimon has already launched his new creature, The First) from the bad story of Kevin Spacey, and my impression is that the screenwriters have tried to do their best to conclude the story in a decent way: a monothematic season comes out, perhaps concentrated too much on the figure of Claire, and pulling out, from scratch, a pair of rivals. Fortunately, the actors are largely convincing (not all), but let's face it, without detracting nothing, to a huge Robin Wright, a series like HoC would have deserved a much more convincing end.

Red Hot

The Deuce - Di George Pelecanos e David Simon - Stagione 2 (9 episodi; HBO) - 2018

Dovremo accontentarci.

The historic fresco of the beating heart of New York, combined with the history of American porn, feminism, the liberation of sexual mores, and other goodies that only two writers like Pelecanos and Simon can manage to put in the same cauldron, continues with its slow but incessant pace, grabbing the viewer that sometimes may prefer something more rhythmic, but if you want to enjoy something very good, will have to go back to follow The Deuce. Unfortunately, audience have been falling, and fortunately, HBO has renewed the series for a third season, but that will have to be the last. We will have to be happy with that.

Chiamami Bruna

Based on the true story of Raquel Pacheco, aka Bruna Surfistinha, who became a celebrity in Brazil, and from her autobiographical book, best seller in her homeland, a book from which a film was also taken, this series known internationally as Call Me Bruna, it can definitely raise discussions more at a conceptual level than as an audiovisual product. Shot with a budget not too high, initially intrigues for the decisiveness of the protagonist, not to hide almost nothing of the world in which the protagonist is dip, but in the long run is lost in sentimental cliches, and the acting, not too convincing, do not helps at all. The series has reached the third season, currently on the air, but despite the theme and the setting was very interesting for me, honestly I do not know if I can even see the second season, because after a start with a bang, the series, as mentioned, is limp.

Playlist - Salmo (2018)

Vedremo.

Let's clarify a concept. I like rap, even if it is not exactly my first choice. I'm not an expert, but I listened to Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill long before many rap and trap listeners were born, and even when Italian rappers of the first hour were very small or even in their cradles. Probably I am not properly updated, but as explained here, I try, since I have a 14-year-old nephew who lives with me, and that especially listening to this type of music. Done this introduction that certainly will not interest anyone, today I want to talk about the last album of Salmo, in the registry office Maurizio Pisciottu born in Olbia in 1984. Also on this, I clarify that before listening to Playlist, I had not heard anything of him, so take my judgment with the so-called benefit of inventory.
To contextualize a little, I read some reviews on the subject. I found extreme criticism, and exaggerated praise. My judgment is, as a good Christian Democrat, moderately positive. I find it interesting the musical variety of the bases, which embrace rock influences, electronic, classic hip hop, and sprayed various of many different genres, adapted to the different needs of the various tracks. Some tracks are really interesting and they remains in your head. The featurings are varied, and some unexpected, like the one with Sfera Ebbasta (unexpected because in Perdonami, to name one, Salmo clearly tries to trigger a controversy - dissing, in the jargon of who is in the field - with the Italian trappers, in fact, as Sfera) on Cabriolet. Then there are Fabri Fibra (Stai zitto, Fibra seems to me, globally, one of the most established inspirations, to Salmo), Nitro (Dispovery Channel), Coez (Sparare alla luna), Nstasia (Il cielo nella stanza). Then there are the lyrics. The guy knows how to do it, and you understand this, especially with the quotes (even only the bands: in Stai zitto they names Slayer and Soundgarden), but sometimes there are real style falls that seem put there just to attract listening due to controversy (from PXM: "If I think of Asia Argento I am rich inside / because neither if she pay me I'll stick it in her"). Moreover, it seems that Salmo is a genius of advertising: in order to promote the album, Salmo improvised a live in Milan in front of the Duomo dressed as homeless, he uploaded a promotional video on Pornhub with a famous Italian pornstar, and another video on Netflix. In short, the impression is that there are also room for improvement. We'll see.

Brillante e oh, così luminoso

Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol. 1 / LP: No Past. No Future. No Sun. - Smashing Pumpkins (2018)

The question to ask is, a bit like that which should be placed before any reunion, it is: why? Pitchfork, which in my opinion often guesses, gave this record 3.4 out of 10. Too naughty? Maybe not even too much. Shiny is a bunch of songs that mimic the Smashing Pumpkins that existed, those that made us fall in love in the early 90s, those of Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie, but now they sound like (I know, it's a cliché, but it makes the idea very well when needed) a cover band of themselves. There is no urgency. There is no fire inside. There is not. Little to add. If not that Jimmy Chamberlin, in spite of his troubled life because of his love for drugs, still remains one of the best drummers in the square: listening to Solara, forgive me this parenthesis as an ex-drummer, it does not surprise me that among his influences mention Gene Krupa. It seemed to me to leaf through the method which at age 11 made me buy my first drum master. It was the Gene Krupa one.
