E' sempre tempo di scoperte, o di ri-scoperte, in campo musicale, per chi vuole quantomeno rallentare il processo di invecchiamento delle cellule cerebrali. Questo nuovo The Magic è il primo disco che ascolto dei Deerhoof, nonostante sia più o meno il loro diciassettesimo, contando live e sperimentazioni varie (il loro debutto, pensate, risale al 1997 con The Man, The King, The Girl). Hanno una storia variegata, hanno "navigato" tra i generi, hanno subito alcuni cambi di formazione, hanno influenzato parecchi altri artisti (li citano St. Vincent, Foo Fighters, Stereolab, of Montreal, Los Campesinos, ma secondo me, per dirne una, i Battles devono loro molto), e probabilmente, se voleste paragonarli a qualche altra band, quantomeno a livello concettuale, potremmo riferirci ai Talking Heads. Il loro stile è senza dubbio caratterizzato dalla voce di Satomi Matsuzaki, unitasi alla band nel 1995, poco dopo gli inizi, e una settimana dopo il suo arrivo negli USA, adesso sposata con il batterista e unico membro fondatore superstite Greg Saunier, anche lui alla voce ogni tanto; tornando allo stile, potremmo senz'altro definirlo, come fanno altri, noise punk, ma ascoltandoli, vi accorgerete che c'è dell'altro.
Melodie sopraffine, attacchi frontali uniti a testi divertenti (ascoltare attentamente Kafe Mania!), maestria distribuita a piene mani, per una band ancora oggi, dopo oltre 20 anni di carriera costellata da collaborazioni di ogni tipo, troppo sottovalutata.
It's always the discoveries time, or re-discoveries, in music, at least for those who want to slow down the aging process of the brain cells. This new "The Magic" is the first album that I listened from Deerhoof, although it is more or less their seventeenth, counting live and various experiments (their debut, think about it, was in 1997 with "The Man, The King, The Girl"). They have a varied history, they have "surfed" between the genres, have undergone some changes, have influenced many other artists (they are cited by St. Vincent, Foo Fighters, Stereolab, of Montreal, Los Campesinos, but in my opinion, to say one name, Battles have a lot to do with them), and probably, if you wanted to compare them to some other band, at least at the conceptual level, we could refer to the Talking Heads. Their style is undoubtedly characterized by the voice of Satomi Matsuzaki, that joined the band in 1995, shortly after the beginning, and a week after his arrival in the US, now married to the drummer and only "surviving" founder member Greg Saunier, who is also the singer occasionally; returning to the style, we could certainly call it, as others do, noise punk, but listening to them, you will find that there's more.
Wonderful in melodies, frontal attacks combined with funny lyrics (listen to "Kafe Mania!" carefully), technique masterfully distributed by the handful, for a band today, after more than 20 year career punctuated by collaborations of all kinds, still too underestimated.
