Secondo disco di uno dei molti progetti di Aaron Turner, i SUMAC si spingono in territori davvero estremi: non c'era da aspettarsi diversamente, Turner è uno di quei poliedrici personaggi che stanno facendo diventare il genere che una volta era metal, in qualcosa di, lasciatemelo dire, pressoché intellettuale. La band, tra l'altro, nasce da alcune ossature di canzoni scritte da Turner appunto, per spingersi al limite, per le quali si è consigliato con Kurt Ballou (Converge) per la ricerca di un batterista in grado di lavorarci sopra. La scelta cadde su Nick Yacyshyn, dai canadesi crust-punk Baptists. I due aprono dunque le danze, ingaggiando al basso Brian Cook (Russian Circles) come membro "intermittente". Quando Cook non è disponibile, subentra per i live Joe Preston (Melvins, High on Fire, Thrones, Sunn O)))). Dopo il debutto con The Deal nel 2015, nel giugno dello scorso anno esce questi What One Becomes, una riflessione sull'identità e sulla sua destabilizzazione al contatto con l'esterno. Attraverso cinque pezzi molto lunghi (oppure 10, se si dividono, come ad esempio fa Spotify, Image of Control, Rigid Man, Clutch of Oblivion in due parti, e addirittura Blackout in tre), Turner ed i suoi compagni d'avventura prova ad andare oltre all'esperienza degli Isis, e forse ci riesce. Il disco è avvolgente, duro e compatto, seppur composto da passaggi con diverse atmosfere, e porta il metal ad un livello senza dubbio superiore.
Second record of one of Aaron Turner's many projects, SUMAC moves to really extreme territories: there was no other to expect, Turner is one of those multifaceted characters who are making turn the genre that was once metal, in something, let me say this, almost intellectual. The band, among other things, was born from some of the songs sketched by Turner, to go to the limit, for which was recommended, from Kurt Ballou (Converge), to search for a drummer who could work on it. The choice fell on Nick Yacyshyn, from Canadian crust-punk Baptists. The two then open the dances, hiring Brian Cook (Russian Circles) as an "intermittent" member. When Cook is unavailable, Joe Preston (Melvins, High on Fire, Thrones, Sunn O)))) takes over. After the debut with "The Deal" in 2015, in June of last year, these "What One Becomes" comes out, a reflection on identity and destabilization in contact with the outside. Through five very long tracks (or 10, if its split, such as Spotify, "Image of Control", "Rigid Man", "Clutch of Oblivion" in two, and even "Blackout" in three), Turner, and his adventure companions, go beyond Isis's experience, and maybe they succeeds. The album is wrap-around, hard and compact, albeit composed of passages with different atmospheres, and brings the metal to the, undoubtedly, next level.
