Exhausting Fire - Kylesa (2015)

Seventh album for the band of Savannah, Georgia, and I must say that for sure, Kylesa are not part of those bands that do not dare anything. Despite a good following, and a critical acclamation, they do not reiterate default schemes, and certainly the definition of sludge metal it's too tight for them. We had already identified, in a sort of shoegaze metal, one of them many facets, but this time they gone well over. While retaining a structure and a rough sound, here we have strong influences of eighties new wave (reverb, echo voices, rhythmic patterns, and almost tribal percussion - they have two drummers, live).
The reiteration of some verses make them psychedelic enough, the alternation of the female voice (Laura Pleasants, also guitar) and the male voice (Philip Cope, also guitar, bass, keyboards), the gait overbearing and the instrumental digressions, the sudden return to the dominant riff, the interesting and complex songwriting, the enveloping and never trivial sound, are the sign of a band that, as said, it's not comfortable in a niche.
They write songs that, despite the roughness and a good complexity, do not give up the melodies, even if "wild", but sometimes even surprisingly catchy, just listen to the wonderful "Moving Day". The reviewer on Pitchfork magazine uses the name of the Pixies (and even of Meat Puppets distantly), to give the coordinates of the sound of Kylesa on this their last job, and I must say that in some passages I strongly agree. But of course, the amalgam of influences, not always managed to perfection, is undoubtedly fascinating. Kylesa are distinguished by personality, and confirmed, they are a band to whom we must bring the utmost respect.
