La cosa che mi viene da pensare, soppesando tutto quello che viene dalla Svezia, è che c'è decisamente qualcosa di strano in quel paese. Strano positivo, ma strano. Magari lo avranno ereditato dai vichinghi (ovviamente sono, probabilmente generalizzando, caratteristiche che dividono con i loro cugini scandinavi tutti). Maestri nello humour nonsense ma anche in quello macabro, maestri nel rock and roll, maestri nel giocare a chi flirta col demonio. Anna von Hausswolff è uno degli esempi. La vedete così, ragazza acqua e sapone, né bellissima ma decisamente non brutta, una voce che può risultare potente ma anche molto eterea, poi vedete i suoi video, le sue copertine (guardate questa, se non è inquietante), ascoltate la sua musica, e poi ditemi se non sembra una che nasconde qualcosa di diabolico.
Ovviamente, e come già detto in occasione del suo precedente Ceremony, a chi ama le sfide musicali, a chi piace non fermarsi nella comfort zone, la musica di Anna risulterà affascinante, accattivante seppur, magari, non esattamente quella che preferisce, ma di sicuro, qualcosa di diverso.
Come Wander With Me / Deliverance sembra un pezzo black metal cantato da Kate Bush, Pomperipossa potrebbe far parte di un disco di Diamanda Galàs; in An Oath, The Miraculous, Evocation, nell'iniziale Discovery e nella seguente The Hope Only of Empty Men, Anna crea canzoni asimmetriche con melodie malate, dando spazio, sullo sfondo (ma neppure troppo sullo sfondo) alla sua passione per l'organo. Sottofondi rumoristici, archi e droni fanno il resto, contribuendo ad evocare un'atmosfera non troppo rassicurante. Non siamo dalle parti di Pharmakon, intendiamoci, quindi forse potete anche provarci.
The thing that makes me think, looking at all that comes from Sweden, is that there is definitely something strange with this country. Strange positive, but strange. Maybe they have inherited from the Vikings (of course I am probably generalizing, but it seems to me that they are sharing characteristics with their Scandinavian cousins). Masters in nonsense humor but also in the macabre one, masters in rock and roll, masters to play to who flirts with the devil. Anna von Hausswolff is one of the examples. So you see, girl soap and water, nor beautiful but definitely nor ugly, her voice can be powerful but also very ethereal, then you see her videos, her covers (look at this one, isn't it disturbing?), listen to her music, and then tell me if she doesn't looks like someone who hide something diabolical.
Of course, and as already mentioned in connection with her previous "Ceremony", to those who love musical challenges, to those who like not to stop in the comfort zone, the music of Anna will be fascinating, even captivating, maybe not exactly what they prefer, but for sure, something different.
As "Wander With Me / Deliverance" seems a piece black metal sung by Kate Bush, "Pomperipossa" could be part of an album by Diamanda Galàs; in "An Oath", "The Miraculous", "Evocation", in the initial "Discovery" and in the following "The Hope Only of Empty Men", Anna creates asymmetrical songs with sick melodies, giving space, on background (but not so much in the background) to her passion for the organ. Substrate with noisy parts, strings and drones do the rest, helping to evoke an atmosphere not too reassuring. We are not close to Pharmakon, mind you, so maybe you can also try.
