Chiudiamo l'anno con quella che, come già anticipato, pare essere una delle nuove tendenze: la rivisitazione di album usciti già da un po'. I Monster Magnet sono alla seconda esperienza, con questa loro rilettura di Mastermind, disco del 2010. La particolarità delle riletture da parte della band di Dave Wyndorf è che, intuibile dal fatto che i dischi che vengono riletti non sono per niente vecchi, non si tratta di "dare una rinfrescata" al suono o comunque attualizzarlo, ma ripensare le canzoni del disco in questione sotto un'ottica leggermente diversa. Come in occasione del precedente Milking the Stars, il mood è molto più sixties e psichedelico. I pezzi reinterpretati sono otto [Dig That Hole che diventa She Digs That Hole, Watch Me Fade che conserva il titolo intatto ma che nell'edizione originale era semplicemente una bonus track, la title track Mastermind alla quale si aggiunge un '69, Hallucination Bomb che diventa Cobras and Fires (Hallucination Bomb), Gods and Punks che diventa Gods, Punks and the Everlasting Twilight, The Titan Who Cried Like a Baby che diventa semplicemente The Titan, When the Planes Fall From the Sky alla quale si aggiunge la parentesi (Sitar and Psycho Version), Time Machine qui in versione esclusivamente strumentale. In più ci sono una cover di Ball of Confusion dei The Temptations (rifatta, come dice Wyndorf, come l'avrebbero fatta gli Hawkind o i Pink Fairies), con la partecipazione alla voce del co-fondatore dei MM Tim Cronin, e una digressione mash up di pezzi degli stessi MM ad opera di Joe Barresi, ingegnere del suono e produttore, I Live Behind the Paradise Machine: Evil Joe Barresi's Magnet Mash Vol.1. Che dire? Capisco il divertissement, ma a questo punto è difficile non pensare al fatto che Dave e i suoi Monster Magnet stiano temporeggiando.
And now, we close the year with one thing that, as I mentioned earlier, seems to be one of the new trends: the revival of albums released while ago. For the Monster Magnet this is the second experience, with this rereading of their 2010 "Mastermind". The peculiarity of the readings from the band of Dave Wyndorf is that, you can guess it from the fact that the albums that they are re-reading are not at all old, is not "to refresh" the sound, but rethink the songs of those albums in a slightly different mood. As in the previous "Milking the Stars", the mood is much more psychedelic sixties. The pieces reinterpreted are eight ["Dig That Hole" that become "She Digs That Hole", "Watch Me Fade" who retains the title intact but which in the original was just a bonus track, the title track "Mastermind" to which is added a "'69", "Hallucination Bomb" that becomes "Cobras and Fires (Hallucination Bomb)", "Gods and Punks" becoming "Gods, Punks and the Everlasting Twilight", "The Titan Who Cried Like a Baby" becoming simply "The Titan", "When The Planes Fall From the Sky" to which is added the parenthesis "(Sitar and Psycho Version)", "Time Machine" here in purely instrumental version. In addition there is a cover of The Temptations, "Ball of Confusion" (remade as Wyndorf says, as would have made by the Hawkind or by Pink Fairies), with participation at the voice of the co-founder of MM Tim Cronin, and a digression mash up of pieces of Monster Magnet by Joe Barresi, sound engineer and producer, "I Live Behind the Paradise Machine: Evil Joe Barresi's Magnet Mash Vol.1". What to say? I understand the divertissement, but at this point it's hard not to think about the fact that Dave and his Monster Magnet are stalling.
