Emperor of Sand - Mastodon (2017)

Cominciamo dalla fine. Jaguar God. Citando un conduttore radiofonico molto in voga attualmente, beh amici, siamo al top. Se non è un capolavoro questo pezzo qua, non leggetemi più, non possiamo essere amici. Se invece nei Mastodon ci credete davvero, ve lo aspettavate un pianoforte, prima o poi, vero? Siete stati accontentati. Bene, settimo disco per il quartetto di Atlanta, Georgia, che è stato così definito.
Da Alternative Press: Mastodon sono una delle hard rock band più grandi di tutti i tempi.
Da Rolling Stone: Mastodon sono un gruppo di condannati-dal-destino, ossessionati dai miti, delinquenti sudisti mangiacarne-e-patate, che sono diventati la band metal più importante tra quelle nuove.
Mi trovo abbastanza d'accordo, e penso, almeno in cuor mio, di essermene accorto per tempo. E' buffo, come dice The Guardian, che ci siano dei fan scontenti, che continuano a preferire "the early stuff" (la roba vecchia), perché ci sono pochi urli gutturali, e perché ci sono ritornelli che acchiappano, su dischi come questo nuovo. Perché, diamine, ponendosi all'ascolto di un pezzo come Roots Remain, è oggettivamente impossibile definire commerciale, mainstream, moscio, o comunque non bello un pezzo con una costruzione del genere (spoiler: c'è il piano anche qui!).
I Mastodon sono una band che, nell'arco di sette dischi, ha compiuto un'evoluzione costante, riuscendo a far affiorare tutte le loro influenze, che sono le più disparate, dallo sludge al progressive, e riuscendo a mescolarle tutte, creando un suono distintivo e riuscendo a comprimere in quattro minuti, la complessità di suite che una volta ne avrebbero richiesti 25. Tutto questo senza mai fare un passo indietro, senza mai adagiarsi sugli allori, senza aver paura di cambiare un poco per la paura di perdere lo zoccolo duro dei sostenitori.
Musicisti sbalorditivi (gli assoli di Hinds stavolta mi hanno lasciato a bocca aperta), eccellenti scrittori di canzoni. I Mastodon sono davvero una tra le più importanti realtà odierne, e secondo me non solo dell'heavy metal.



Let's start from the end. "Jaguar God". Quoting a radio host in vogue today, "well friends, we are at the top". If this track is not a masterpiece, do not read me anymore, we can not be friends. If you really believed in Mastodon, you were expecting a piano, sooner or later, weren't you? Well, here it is, folks. Seventh album of the quartet Atlanta, Georgia, which has been defined.
From Alternative Press: Mastodon are one of the all-time great hard-rock groups.
From Rolling Stone: Mastodon are a bunch of doom-haunted, myth-obsessed, meat-and-potatoes Southern badasses who have become the most important new band in metal.
I am quite agree, and I think, at least in my heart, I'd noticed in time. It's funny, says The Guardian, there are disgruntled fans who still prefer "the early stuff"; maybe because there are few guttural screams, and because there are catchy choruses on records like this new one. Because, heck, listening to a track as "Roots Remain", it is objectively impossible to define commercial, mainstream, limp, or not a beautiful track with a construction of this kind (spoiler: there is a piano also here!).
Mastodon is a band that, over seven album, has made a constant evolution, managing to bring out all their influences, which are the most diverse, from sludge to progressive, and they've been able to mix them all, creating a distinctive sound and managing to squeeze in four minutes, the complexity of suites that once it would have required 25. All this without ever taking a step back, never rest on their laurels, not being afraid to change a little for fear of losing the die-hard supporters.
Stunning musicians (Hinds' solos left me open mouth this time), excellent songwriters. Mastodon are really one of the most important today's realities, and in my opinion, not only heavy metal.
