Stavo scorrendo la discografia dei mitici Depeche Mode, e ho la netta impressione che l'ultimo loro disco che ascoltai, fino a questo nuovo Spirit, fu Exciter, nel 2001. Sono passati dunque 16 anni, loro nel frattempo hanno continuato a sfornarne uno ogni quattro, quindi Playing the Angel (2005), Sounds of the Universe (2009), Delta Machine (2013). Ho letto in giro che non erano granché, ma magari mi sbaglio. Quel che so, è che questo Spirit è buono. Non un capolavoro, intendiamoci, ma quel tanto che basta per scomodare il luogo comune che "gallina vecchia fa buon brodo". Going Backwards e Where's the Revolution (dove gli ultracinquantenni inglesi, nella prima ammoniscono che non ci stiamo evolvendo, mentre nella seconda sembrano spronare i giovani a cambiare il mondo, ed esplicitano la loro delusione perché non è stato fatto prima - anche per colpa loro, forse; un chiaro cambio di rotta rispetto alle liriche più introspettive del passato), sono una buona doppietta iniziale. L'album prosegue con una buona media anche nelle composizioni che seguono, con un'elettronica moderna quanto basta per non suonare troppo datata, e buone composizioni, seppure un po' troppo "pacate". Ci sono però buoni spunti, quindi possiamo concludere che Gahan, Gore e Fletcher stanno ancora bene.
I was scrolling through the discography of the legendary Depeche Mode and I have the distinct impression that their last album that I listened to, until this new "Spirit", was "Exciter", in 2001. It's been 16 years ago, therefore, they have since continued to churn out one every four (years), so "Playing the Angel" (2005), "Sounds of the Universe" (2009), "Delta Machine" (2013). I read around that were not so good, but maybe I'm wrong. What I do know, it is that this "Spirit" is good enough. Not a masterpiece, sorry, but just enough to recall the cliché that "old chicken makes good soup". "Going Backwards" and "Where's the Revolution" (where the British band, all over fifty, in the first song warn that we are not evolving, while in the second seem to encourage young people to change the world, and make explicit their disappointment because it was not done before - even their fault, perhaps; a clear change of direction compared to the more introspective lyrics of the past), are a good initial double shot. The album continues with a good average even in the following compositions, with modern electronics enough not to sound too dated, and good compositions, albeit a bit too "calm". But there are good ideas, then we can conclude that Gahan, Gore and Fletcher are still in a good shape.

ho provato ad ascoltarlo e secondo me ti è piaciuto perché non li ascoltavi da un po'. È lo stesso disco da 16 anni. Alcuni brani piacevoli, altri meno. Io ci trovo molto mestiere e ormai poca passione. Ma non gliene faccio una colpa, sia chiaro. Esistono da così tanto di quel tempo che immagino che l'ispirazione ormai venga meno.
