The Outer Ring, sostiene Judy Berman su Pitchfork, è un "territorio immaginato che può sostanzialmente sovrapporsi con alcuni segmenti dell'elettorato statunitense, dove i sogni e la disperazione infranti vanno in metastasi e diventano un mostro di un film di serie B, con una rabbia incontrollabile". O forse sono solo i sobborghi delle classi sociali più disperate, negli USA, non quei suburbs plastificati che vediamo solitamente nelle serie tv o nei film che sono ambientati nella classe media. Erika Michelle Anderson, con questo suo terzo lavoro da solista, lo dice lei stessa: "questo disco è troppo politico, e non molto mainstream". E' un disco che coniuga musicalmente tutto quello che di lei vi dissi nella recensione del suo precedente The Future's Void, e cioè che la ragazza sa scrivere canzoni, e sa dare loro un'impronta ben precisa, ma non propriamente rinchiusa in un unico genere musicale, e inoltre ci regala una fotografia piuttosto precisa sugli USA di oggi, in un contesto politico che pare impazzito, con versi al tempo stesso lucidi ed evocativi.
The Outer Ring, argues Judy Berman on Pitchfork, is an "imagined territory that may substantially overlap with certain segments of the U.S. electorate, where broken dreams and desperation metastasize into a B-movie monster of uncontrollable rage". Or maybe they are just the suburbs of the most desperate social classes in the US, not those plasticized suburbs that we usually see in TV series or in movies that are set in the middle class. Erika Michelle Anderson, with her third solo work, states herself, "This new album is too political, and not very mainstream". It's a record that musically combines all that I told you about her in my review of her previous "The Future's Void", namely that she knows how to write songs, and she knows how to give them a very precise address, but not properly locked up into a single musical genre, and also gives us a somewhat accurate picture of today's USA, in a political context that seems crazy, with verses both lucid and evocative.
