Come sia potuto accadere non lo so, ma in tutti questi anni, sono sempre stato incuriosito da Andrew Fetterly Wilkes-Krier aka Andrew W.K., ma non ero mai riuscito ad ascoltarlo. Adesso, al quinto disco, posso parlarvi di lui e di questo disco con una certa cognizione, naturalmente, come sempre, da un punto di vista totalmente personale.
Andrew, come dice meravigliosamente (che invidia!) Steve Kandell su Pitchfork, "è un cartone animato, ma utile, benevolo, familiare". Personaggio totalmente positivo, personalità televisiva e radiofonica, musicista poliedrico e produttore, imprenditore, columnist, autore di spoken word e performance motivazionali e di auto-aiuto, convinto assertore del potere dell'essere umano e dell'amore incondizionato per il prossimo, riesce a mettere tutto questo in musica (e parole), con un messaggio diretto, senza essere un poeta, e con un sound che pesca a piene mani dall'hard rock, dall'AOR, dal miglior Elton John rock (il primo strumento che Andrew ha imparato a suonare, a quattro anni, è stato il piano) e dalle rock opera.
Il risultato è si, un po' kitsch, ma tremendamente coinvolgente, e composto da canzoni da urlare a squarciagola, dannatamente orecchiabili. Un disco che ascolto già da qualche settimana, e che non accenna ad annoiarmi.
I do not know how it happened, but all these years, I've always been intrigued by Andrew Fetterly Wilkes-Krier aka Andrew W. K., but I've never been able to listen to him. Now, on the fifth album, I can talk about him and this record with some knowledge, of course, as always, from a totally personal point of view.
Andrew, as he says wonderfully (what envy!) Steve Kandell on Pitchfork, "He's a cartoon, but useful, benevolent, familiar one". Totally positive character, TV and radio personality, multifaceted musician and producer, entrepreneur, columnist, author of spoken word and motivational and self-help performances, convinced supporter of the power of human beings and unconditional love for others, put all this in music (and words), with a direct message, without being a poet, and with a sound that is full of hard rock, AOR, by the best Elton John rock (the first instrument that Andrew has learned to play, at four years, was the piano), and rock opera.
The result is yes, a bit kitsch, but tremendously engaging, and composed of songs to screaming out loudly, damn catchy. A record I've been listening to for a few weeks now, and which does not seems to have the intention to boring me.
