E' arrivato anche il momento di parlarvi di Suzanne Vega, un'artista che ho ascoltato abbastanza ai suoi inizi, e della quale quindi non vi ho mai parlato (se non facendo dei paragoni con qualche altro/altra musicista). Ha debuttato nel 1985 con Suzanne Vega, e raggiunse l'apice della sua carriera con il secondo disco Solitude Standing, del 1987. Adesso, un po' come Natalie Merchant, è una bella signora che non nasconde i suoi 57 anni, ma ha ancora una voce deliziosa, e la voglia di scrivere canzoni che significhino qualcosa, che raccontino qualcosa e che parlino di cose attuali, seppure usando allegorie o metafore. Questo suo nono disco (in più di 30 anni...) è basato su una pièce teatrale da lei stessa scritta ed interpretata (che ha debuttato nel 2011 - recitare è un sogno nel cassetto di Suzanne, ha fatto molti provini per film poi divenuti famosi, e non è mai stata scelta), Carson McCullers Talks About Love, sulla tormentata vita della scrittrice statunitense Carson McCullers, un'autrice con la quale la Vega vede molte affinità, e che ammira moltissimo. I dieci pezzi sono stati scritti con Michael Jefry Stevens, e (la maggior parte) con Duncan Sheik, col quale condivide la fede buddhista Nichiren.
E' un album raffinato, vagamente jazz, piacevolissimo, fatto da dieci canzoni scritte in maniera brillante, che guardano al passato, anche se parlano, appunto, di un personaggio che lottava per molti diritti che, pian piano, stanno diventando reali.
It's time to tell you about Suzanne Vega, an artist I have listened enough in her beginnings, and that therefore, I have never spoken (if not making comparisons with some other musician). She debuted in 1985 with "Suzanne Vega", and reached the pinnacle of her career with the second album "Solitude Standing", in 1987. Now, a bit as Natalie Merchant, she is a lovely lady who does not hide her 57 years, but still has a lovely voice, and the desire to write songs that mean something, that tell something and that they speak of actual things, albeit using allegories or metaphors. This ninth album (in more than 30 years...) is based on a play written and performed by herself (which debuted in 2011 - acting is a dream of Suzanne, she did many auditions for films later became famous, and she has never been chosen), "Carson McCullers Talks About Love", on the tormented life of American writer Carson McCullers, an author with whom Vega sees many similarities, and she admires greatly. The ten tracks were written with Michael Jefry Stevens, and (most) with Duncan Sheik, with whom she shares the Nichiren Buddhist faith.
It's a refined album, vaguely jazz, pleasant, made from ten songs brilliantly written, that look to the past, even if they speak, precisely, of a character who fought for many rights that, little by little, are becoming real.
