Sesto e ultimo disco per quella che probabilmente è stata la più grande live band di sempre. Si, stando alle ultimi dichiarazioni, la band si scioglierà definitivamente dopo il tour a supporto del disco stesso.
Ora, il rischio in cui si può cadere, parlando di un disco dei DEP, è quello di definirlo prevedibile, visto che paradossalmente, se si va a cercare alla radice dei loro pezzi, c'è sempre una velocissima strofa sincopata e violenta con un'apertura melodica, sostenuta ma appunto, sempre ariosa nei confronti della strofa claustrofobica, seguiti eventualmente da un bridge che cerca di essere una via di mezzo tra le due. Il mio invito è quello di non fermarsi a ciò.
A parte i testi, sempre tesi ad analizzare i rapporti interpersonali con un discreto uso della lingua inglese, e la tecnica, sempre indiscutibile, del quintetto tutto, nonostante i numerosissimi cambi di formazione, e la costante ricerca, soprattutto dall'ingresso in formazione di Greg Puciato alla voce, di frequentissime aperture melodiche impensabili agli inizi, e di episodi che spesso li accomunano a vari lavori di Mike Patton, l'attento ascolto anche di questo "canto del cigno", vi affascinerà per come sia un lavoro stratificato e complesso, per il coraggio della band di unire ad una base mathcore metal fatta soprattutto di chitarre violente e ritmiche controllate ma velocissime e selvagge, elementi che vanno dal free jazz all'A.O.R., fino all'elettronica.
Il cambio di atmosfera, con tanto di sezione archi, al minuto 2.40 di Nothing to Forget, per citare uno dei momenti salienti del disco, è una di quelle cose che, a mio modesto parere, dovrebbero rimanere ad imperitura memoria di una band che ha segnato un'epoca, un modo di "fare" musica del vivo, che giustamente deve dare libertà ai propri componenti fondamentali (Weinman, già con i Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, Puciato, che forse proseguirà con i Killer be Killed, forse no, Wilson), così come a volte si deve liberare un animale selvaggio.
Se non li avete mai visti live, vi consiglio caldamente di non perderveli, durante questo ultimo tour.
Sixth and last album for a combo that was probably the greatest live band ever. Yes, according to recent statements, the band will dissolve permanently after the tour that will support this album.
Now, the risk that you may fall, talking about a DEP album, is to define expected, as paradoxically, if you go to look at the root of their tracks structure, there is always a fast and violent syncopated verse, and a chorus, still robust but with melodic opening, always airy against the claustrophobic verse, followed possibly by a bridge that tries to be a middle ground between the two. My invitation is to not stop at that "analysis".
Apart from the texts, always aimed to analyze the human relationships, with discrete use of the English language, and the technique, always indisputable, of the all quintet, despite numerous lineup changes, and the constant melodic research, especially from the entrance in the formation of Greg Puciato on vocals, unthinkable at the beginning, and episodes that often bring the DEP work to a comparation to several works by Mike Patton, an attentive listening of this "swan song", will charm you as it is a layered and complex work, for the courage of the band to join a metal mathcore base, made mostly of violent and rhythmic guitars controlled but very fast and wild, items ranging from free jazz to the AOR, up to electronics.
The change of atmosphere, complete with a string section, per minute 2.40 of "Nothing to Forget", to quote one of the highlights of the album, is one of those things that, in my humble opinion, should remain in eternal memory of a band that has marked an era, a way of "doing" of the live music, which rightly should give freedom to its essential components (Weinman, formerly with Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, Puciato, that perhaps will continue with Killer Be Killed, maybe not, Wilson), as well as occasionally you have to release a wild animal.
If you have never seen them live, I strongly suggest you do not lose them, during this last tour.
