Il sedicesimo disco degli svedesi Therion, è decisamente un'opera megalomane. Tre CD, oltre tre ore di musica, tre atti per 46 pezzi, decine di personaggi (quasi 30 voci), per una storia tratta dal racconto breve A Short Story of the Antichrist di Vladimir Solovev (dove il filosofo russo anticipava, profeticamente, la fine del regno zarista usando dei simbolismi), alla quale il leader Christofer Johnsson ha addirittura aggiunto trama e personaggi. Una rock opera dalla durata abbondante. Da una parte, quel che mi viene da pensare, nonostante non sia assolutamente il mio genere quello che praticano gli svedesi (symphonic metal), è che, per una band che suona appunto questo tipo di musica, e che dura per 16 dischi con un buon successo, una cosa del genere non può che essere un punto di arrivo. Immagino solo le difficoltà, le opposizioni della casa discografica, le problematiche che dovranno affrontare per portare una produzione del genere dal vivo; e non solo. Pensate, anche senza conoscerli, alle critiche che dovranno affrontare da parte non solo di chi non li apprezza, ma anche di chi li segue! Eppure, il solo fatto di avere messo in piedi una cosa del genere, è encomiabile, a prescindere dai risultati.
Ecco, i risultati. Ho letto molte critiche, e purtroppo debbo anche condividerne alcune, a livello musicale. Piattezza degli arrangiamenti, mancanza di picchi, naturalmente, durata che mette a dura prova l'ascoltatore. Eppure, qualcosa di buono c'è, e, ripeto, devo togliermi il cappello dinanzi a un coraggio musicale del genere.
The sixteenth record of the Swedes Therion, is definitely a megalomaniac work. Three CDs, over three hours of music, three acts for 46 tracks, dozens of characters (almost 30 voices), for a story taken from the short story A Short Story of the Antichrist by Vladimir Solovev (where the Russian philosopher prophetically anticipated the end of the Tsarist realm using symbolism), to which the leader Christofer Johnsson has even added plot and characters. A rock opera with an abundant duration. On the one hand, what makes me think, although it is absolutely not my genre what the Swedes practice (symphonic metal), is that, for a band that plays this kind of music, and that lasts for 16 records with a good success, such a thing can only be a point of arrival. I can only imagine, the difficulties, the oppositions of the record company, the problems that will have to face to bring a production of the genre live; and not only. Think, even without knowing them, the criticism that will have to face not only from those who do not appreciate them, but also from those who follow them! Yet the mere fact of having set up such a thing is commendable, regardless of the results.
Here, the results. I have read a lot of criticisms, and unfortunately I also have to share some of them, on a musical level. Flatness of the arrangements, lack of peaks, and of course, duration that puts a strain on the listener. Still, there is something good, and again, I have to take off my hat in front of such a musical courage.
