Love Is Here to Stay - Tony Bennett and Diana Krall (2018)

Eccoci a parlare per la seconda volta, su fassbinder, di un disco di Tony Bennett, vero nome Anthony Dominick Benedetto, novantaduenne con 57 album in studio alle spalle [con questo disco entra nel Guinness per "il tempo più lungo trascorso tra l'uscita di una registrazione originale e una nuova registrazione dello stesso singolo dallo stesso artista (Fascinating Rhythm di Ira e George Gershwin)]; la volta precedente fu in occasione del suo disco di duetti con Lady Gaga, nel 2014, sempre su standard jazz: Chris Pearson su The Times, recensendo, ha commentato che "i fan di Bennett sono ormai rassegnati ad ascoltare solo dischi di duetti, anche se lui lavora meglio da solo". Questa volta parliamo di questo nuovo disco che lo vede insieme all'amica di lunga data Diana Jean Krall, pianista e voce contralto jazz della quale, invece, ci siamo occupati molte volte. Moglie di Elvis Costello, una quindicina di album alle spalle, canadese, dà il suo meglio, come ormai sappiamo bene, anche lei con classici standard jazz. Quindi, i due hanno deciso di deliziarci con 10 duetti sulle note di famosissimi pezzi della premiata ditta Gershwin (Ira e George), più uno (o due, nell'edizione Target) cadauno in versione "solo". Alla musica, dettaglio non trascurabile, c'è The Bill Charlap Trio (Charlap al piano, Peter Washington al contrabbasso, Kenny Washington alla batteria). Risultato: prevedibilmente, grandissime versioni di 'S Wonderful, Fascinating Rhythm, Do It Again, Somebody Loves Me, Nice Work If You Can Get It, e, ovviamente, Love Is Here to Stay.



Here we are talking for the second time, on fassbinder, of a record by Tony Bennett, real name Anthony Dominick Benedetto, ninety-two years old with 57 albums in the studio on his shoulder [with this record joins the Guinness for "the longest time spent between the output of an original recording and a new recording of the same single by the same artist (Fascinating Rhythm by Ira and George Gershwin)], the last time it was on his duet album with Lady Gaga, in 2014, always on jazz standards: Chris Pearson on The Times, reviewing, he commented that "Bennett's fans are now resigned to only listening to duet records, even if he works better on his own." This time we talk about this new album that he sees together with his longtime friend Diana Jean Krall, pianist and contralto jazz voice, on the other hand, we have dealt with many times: wife of Elvis Costello, a fifteen album behind her, Canadian, gives her best, as we now know, she too with classic jazz standards. So, the two decided to delight us with 10 duets on the notes of famous tracks of the award-winning company Gershwin (Ira and George), plus one (or two, in the Target edition) each in "solo" version. For the music, a not inconsiderable detail, there is The Bill Charlap Trio (Charlap on piano, Peter Washington on double-bass, Kenny Washington on drums). Result: predictably, very great versions of 'S Wonderful, Fascinating Rhythm, Do It Again, Somebody Loves Me, Nice Work If You Can Get It, and of course, Love Is Here to Stay.
