Non ve la prenderete, se vi dico che fino a pochi giorni fa, non avevo mai neppure sentito parlare di questa band inglese dal nome Dragonforce. Come faccio spesso, ho scelto, come primo ascolto, il disco più recente, e mi sono però imbattuto in una edizione re-mixata e re-masterizzata di un loro album del 2012, evidentemente un disco al quale loro tengono molto. Per quelli che non lo sanno, i Dragonforce hanno la particolarità di essere una band inglese, ma i loro membri, almeno, il 99%, hanno origini non inglesi: la formazione attuale, infatti, vede i due chitarristi Herman Li e Sam Totman rispettivamente di origini cinesi e neozelandesi, il bassista Frédéric Leclercq ovviamente francese, il batterista Gee Anzalone (non suonava su The Power Within, l'edizione originale, è entrato in formazione in seguito) italiano, il tastierista Vadim Pruzhanov ucraino; probabilmente, l'unico inglese-inglese è il cantante Marc Hudson. Insomma, di cosa stiamo parlando? Parliamo di una band che ha fatto della tamarraggine una bandiera, e del power metal unito allo speed metal super tecnico, una ragione di essere. Influenzati dai videogiochi, definiti dal suono dei due chitarristi, sempre impegnati in assoli lunghi ed intrecciati, disegnano tracce potenti ma sempre alla ricerca di melodie anche un po' stucchevoli, ma efficaci. Una sorta di Babymetal in versione macho. Non il massimo dell'originalità, certo, ma per un vecchio metallaro, gioia per le orecchie.
You should not get angry with me, if I tell you that until a few days ago, I had never even heard of this English band called Dragonforce. As I often do, I chose the most recent record as my first listen, but I came across a re-mixed and re-mastered edition of their album of 2012 The Power Within, evidently a record that they care a lot about. For those who do not know, the Dragonforce have the distinction of being an English band, but their members, at least, the 99%, have non-English origins: the current line-up, in fact, sees the two guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman respectively of Chinese and New Zealand origins, bassist Frédéric Leclercq obviously French, drummer Gee Anzalone (did not play on The Power Within, the original edition, he joined the band later) Italian, keyboardist Vadim Pruzhanov Ukrainian; probably, the only English-English is the singer Marc Hudson. In short, what are we talking about? Let's talk about a band that has made of kitsch a flag, and of the power metal combined with the super technical speed metal, a reason to be. Influenced by videogames, defined by the sound of the two guitarists, always engaged in long and intertwined solos, they draw powerful tracks but always looking for melodies that are also a bit cloying, but effective. A sort of Babymetal in a macho version. Not the best of originality, of course, but for an old metalhead, joy for the ears.
