73 anni, maniaco del football, tre matrimoni, otto figli da cinque madri diverse, collezionista di auto e di modellini di treni, Comandante dell'Ordine dell'Impero Britannico per meriti musicali, ha vinto un cancro alla tiroide e re-imparato a cantare dopo un nodulo benigno alle corde vocali, e qui è al suo trentesimo disco in studio. Ha militato in sette band, dopo di che ha iniziato una lunghissima carriera solista. Esponente di spicco del Blue-eyed soul (l'RNB cantato da bianchi), non disdegna blues, rock e folk, finanche la musica tradizionale che viene appunto dall'Impero (o, se preferite, dalla Perfida Albione e dintorni), nato a Londra da padre scozzese e madre inglese. Tutto questo è contenuto in maniera sorprendentemente brillante in questi Blood Red Roses, album prodotto dall'esperto Kevin Savigar, collaboratore di lungo corso di Rod the Mod, il disco contiene buoni pezzi originali, e alcune chicche, come una versione appassionata del traditional irlandese Grace, il classico blues Rollin' & Tumblin', e, nella versione Deluxe, Who Designed the Snowflake di Paddy McAloon (Prefab Sprout), e lo standard It Was a Very Good Year di Ervin Drake. Non crediate però che i pezzi originali siano dei riempitivi: tutt'altro. Superate le risatine snob, e provate ad ascoltare. Potrebbe sorprendervi.

He played in seven bands, after which he began a very long solo career. A prominent member of the Blue-eyed soul (the RNB sung by whites), does not disdain blues, rock and folk, even the traditional music that comes from the Empire (or, if you prefer, from the Perfida Albione and surroundings), born in London from a Scottish father and an English mother. All of this is contained in a surprisingly brilliant way in these Blood Red Roses, an album produced by the expert Kevin Savigar, longtime collaborator of Rod the Mod, it contains good original tracks, and some goodies, like a passionate version of the Irish traditional Grace, the classic blues Rollin &Tumblin', and, in the Deluxe version, Who Designed the Snowflake by Paddy McAloon (Prefab Sprout), and the standard It Was a Very Good Year by Ervin Drake. But do not think that the original tracks are fillers: far from it. Get over the snobby giggles, and try listening. It may surprise you.
