Un sabato di primavera che finalmente sa d'estate, un incontro con amici nordisti, una passeggiata per Modena, brulicante di giovani allegri, si mangia qualcosa ed eccoci a La Tenda, locale ammirevole per l'impegno a portare musica veramente underground, per di più gratis. Cinque band sono veramente troppe, ed arriviamo giusto in tempo per l'ultimo pezzo degli Acres, band inglese già compagna di tour degli headliner di stasera. Pubblico sparuto, ci avviciniamo fin sotto il palco, bassissimo, per l'esibizione dei Gatherers, band del New Jersey che fonde l'hardcore melodico e lo screamo. Non il massimo sul palco, per essere statunitensi, ma ci vanno giù duro e i pezzi sono buoni: l'amico Beach me li aveva raccomandati, ma ancora non ero stato in grado di sentirli prima di stasera.
Rapidissimo cambio palco, ed ecco la band gallese, che sta portando in tour l'ottimo Where I Go When I Am Sleeping, e la decisione di sciogliersi dopo questo giro. I tempi sono stretti, l'esibizione dura quindi un'ora scarsa, ma c'è il tempo per apprezzare le sonorità hardcore virate in salsa shoegaze, e quella ricerca melodica affannosa, quegli stacchi densi di pathos che ce li faranno ricordare. Un mazzo di fiori attaccato all'asta del microfono di Tom è un po' il simbolo di questa band, durata il tempo di due album in studio, che picchia duro ma che è (era) capace di grandissima sensibilità. E' stato un piacere conoscervi.
Rapid stage change, and here is the Welsh band, which is bringing the excellent Where I Go When I Am Sleeping on tour, and the decision to disband after this round. The times are tight, the performance therefore lasts a short time, but there is time to appreciate the hardcore sounds turned in shoegaze sauce, and that frantic melodic research, those breaks full of pathos that will make us remember them. A bunch of flowers attached to Tom's microphone rod is a little bit the symbol of this band, which lasted two studio albums, which beats hard but is (was) capable of great sensitivity. It was a pleasure to meet you.
