La superband della quale abbiamo ampiamente parlato in occasione del loro album di debutto, dopo quattro anni ci regala un secondo disco. Avevo ancora nelle orecchie la grandiosità di quella grande prova, quindi i primi ascolti mi hanno lasciato non entusiasta come speravo. Eppure, Umbra Vitae è un'entità che trascende il "semplice" death metal, e va oltre. A partire da un suono grandioso (sempre grazie al solito Kurt Ballou), anche questo disco mette insieme le migliori influenze del metal estremo, dal doom all'hardcore, e alla fine risulta un ascolto più che soddisfacente, con grandi prove tecniche (e vocali), al punto che, in alcuni momenti, ho pensato che questa band potrebbe colmare, parzialmente, il vuoto lasciato dai Dillinger Escape Plan, seppure non sia esattamente la stessa tazza di té.
The super band we talked about extensively on the occasion of their debut album, after four years gives us a second album. I still had the grandeur of that great test in my ears, so the first listens left me not as enthusiastic as I had hoped. Yet, Umbra Vitae is an entity that transcends "simple" death metal, and goes beyond. Starting from a grandiose sound (again thanks to the usual Kurt Ballou), this album also brings together the best influences of extreme metal, from doom to hardcore, and in the end it is a more than satisfactory listen, with great technical (and vocal), to the point that, at times, I thought that this band could partially fill the void left by Dillinger Escape Plan, even if it's not exactly the same cup of tea.
