Il festival Roadburn, che si svolge tutti gli anni (meno questo, ovviamente) a Tilburg, Olanda, è qualcosa di più che un festival. Gli ospiti sono spinti a proporre qualcosa di unico, possibilmente irripetibile. I Triptykon sono una band svizzera, creatura di Thomas Gabriel Warrior, che potremmo considerare come la naturale prosecuzione della band di culto Celtic Frost. Tom ha da sempre avuto nel cassetto il sogno di comporre ed eseguire un requiem per orchestra, e nel 2019, il suo sogno si è realizzato, appunto sul palco del Roadburn, insieme ai suoi Triptykon, alla Dutch Metropole Orkest diretta dal finlandese Jukka Isakkila, ed ultima ma non meno importante, alla cantante tunisina Safa Heraghi. La scaletta è composta da una versione rivisitata di Rex Irae (da Into the Pandemonium, dei Celtic Frost, dove era appunto sottotitolata Requiem) posta come Overture, Winter (da Monotheist, sempre Celtic Frost, dove era sottotitolata Requiem, Chapter Three: Finale, perché posta come terza parte di Triptych, in chiusura all'album, e come vedete, questi riferimenti ciclici già rendono il senso dell'arte di Tom) posta in chiusura come Finale, e in mezzo, l'inedita Grave Eternal, il Requiem vero e proprio, una traccia di circa 33 minuti divisa in sei movimenti (spero si possano definire così). Bene, probabilmente il mio giudizio è falsato dalla stima e dall'ammirazione che nutro verso il personaggio, ma, molto sinteticamente, mi pare un'opera ammirevole, dove finalmente e veramente, il metal e la musica classica dimostrano di avere davvero radici comuni, al contrario di moltissime operazioni alle quali siamo stati costretti ad assistere negli anni, operazioni che a mio parere coprivano di ridicolo sia la classica sia il metal. Un fortissimo applauso a tutti i protagonisti della cosa, e una sentita ma positiva invidia verso chi ha assistito all'evento. Disco a mio giudizio imperdibile.
The Roadburn festival, which takes place every year (minus this, of course) in Tilburg, the Netherlands, is more than just a festival. Guests are driven to offer something unique, possibly unrepeatable. Triptykon are a Swiss band, created by Thomas Gabriel Warrior, which we could consider as the natural continuation of the cult band Celtic Frost. Tom has always had in his drawer the dream of composing and performing a requiem for orchestra, and in 2019, his dream came true, precisely on the Roadburn stage, together with his Triptykon, at the Dutch Metropole Orkest directed by the Finnish Jukka Isakkila, and last but not least, the Tunisian singer Safa Heraghi. The track list is composed of a revisited version of Rex Irae (from Into the Pandemonium, by Celtic Frost, where it was precisely subtitled Requiem) placed as Overture, Winter (from Monotheist, also Celtic Frost, where it was subtitled Requiem, Chapter Three: Final, because placed as the third part of Triptych, at the end of the album, and as you can see, these cyclical references already give you the sense of art by Tom) placed at the end as Finale, and in the middle, the unreleased Grave Eternal, the true Requiem, a track of about 33 minutes divided into six movements (I hope they can be defined like this). Well, probably my judgment is distorted by the esteem and admiration that I have towards the character, but, very briefly, it seems to me an admirable work, where finally and truly, metal and classical music prove to have really common roots, unlike many operations that we have been forced to witness over the years, operations that in my opinion had given to the classical and the metal music, a sense of ridicule. A huge applause to all the protagonists of the thing, and a heartfelt but positive envy towards those who attended the event. Album, in my opinion, unmissable.
