The Abstinence Teacher

Ruth Ramsey è un'insegnante di educazione sessuale in un liceo di una cittadina di provincia del New Jersey. Divorziata, con due figlie adolescenti, da molto non ha una relazione, nonostante non sia così da buttare; i suoi migliori amici sono una coppia gay. Un giorno sventurato, le scappa, in tutta buona fede, un commento sul sesso orale. In città si sta espandendo una chiesa di cristiani rinati, e una delle sue allieve è una di questi. Riferisce il commento ai suoi genitori, e da lì si innesca una spirale tragicomica che danneggia Ruth, che nel frattempo si trova a fronteggiare altre "emergenze".

Quando ho ordinato questo libro, incuriosito dal titolo, non ho realizzato immediatamente che lo scrittore era proprio il Tom Perrotta dal cui romanzo era stata tratta la serie tv The Leftovers. Non mi ero reso conto neppure che sempre lui era stato l'autore della sceneggiatura di Little Children, sempre tratta da un suo libro, e per la quale ha ricevuto una nomination agli Oscar. Ancora più interessante è stato leggere che l'autore stesso ha avuto lo spunto per scrivere questo libro dai risultati delle elezioni statunitensi del 2004, elezioni determinate soprattutto dai voti della popolazione cosiddetta evangelica. Perrotta dice che, come scrittore, gli era sfuggita una cosa come questa, e si era sentito inadeguato; quindi, si è messo ad indagare su questo "mondo". Personalmente, aggiungo che pure The Leftovers (il romanzo è susseguente a questo The Abstinence Teacher), parte un po' dallo stesso spunto, inventandosi un contesto distopico. 
Detto questo, il romanzo è stato uno dei pochi che ha catturato la mia attenzione fin dalle prime pagine, e mi ha regalato non poche emozioni. Una scrittura pulita e scorrevole come da tempo non ne trovavo, che riesce ad esprimere concetti semplici ma importanti, e al tempo stesso l'inquietudine di una persona normale ed equilibrata dinnanzi all'aumentare della marea di estremisti ed ottusi. Bello.

When I ordered this book, intrigued by the title, I did not realize immediately that the writer was the Tom Perrotta author of the novel from which it was taken the television series "The Leftovers". I had not even realized that he always had been the author of the "Little Children" screenplay, always it comes from one of his books, and for which he received an Oscar nomination. Even more interesting was to read that the author himself wanted to write this book after the results of the US elections of 2004, decided mainly by the votes of the so-called evangelical population. Perrotta said that, as a writer, he had missed something like this, and felt inadequate; then, it started to investigate this "world." Personally, I add that even "The Leftovers" (the novel is subsequent to this "The Abstinence Teacher"), starts a bit from the same inspiration, inventing a dystopian environment.

That said, the novel was one of the few that caught my attention from the first page, and gave me quite a few emotions. Writing clean and smooth, as I couldn't find it from some times, it expresses simple but important concepts, and at the same time the anxiety of a normal and balanced person in front of the increasing tide of extremist and obtusity. Beautiful.
