Eccoci qua oggi a commentare l'undicesimo disco dei Testament, formazione seminale della seconda ondata del thrash metal della cosiddetta Bay Area. La "seconda ondata" è una definizione che mi invento in questo momento, giusto per dire che questa band ebbe celebrità dopo i primi (Metallica, Exodus, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth); in realtà, la formazione non è più tarda. Ora, nonostante leggeri cambi di direzione musicale dal loro disco di debutto The Legacy, del 1987 (disco che personalmente ho ascoltato allo sfinimento), naturalmente verso un metal sempre robusto e veloce, ma diciamo meno thrash e più metal, un po' come tutte le band di quell'ondata che sono riuscite ad arrivare fino ad oggi (direttamente, o passando da scioglimento e susseguente reunion), il succo è sempre lo stesso.
Quindi, intendiamoci bene: Brotherhood of the Snake è un ottimo disco di metal, suonato perfettamente, massiccio, incazzato, con testi neppure troppo scemi, con i classici stilemi (doppia cassa, moshing time, rallentamenti, ripartenze, cambi di tempo, splendidi, questo va detto, assoli di chitarra, richiami agli Iron Maiden migliori) del genere, ma che se fosse uscito 30 anni fa, avrebbe fatto gridare al miracolo, uscendo oggi, potrebbe anche far semplicemente sorridere.
Here we are today to comment on the eleventh of Testament album, the seminal formation of the second wave of thrash metal of the so-called Bay Area. So, understand me well: "Brotherhood of the Snake" is a great metal record, it is played perfectly, massive, pissed off, with lyrics not too stupid, with classic references (double bass, moshing time, slowdowns, restarts, changes of tempo, beautiful, this it must be said, guitar solos, references to the best Iron Maiden) the the genre, but if it was been released 30 years ago, would been a miracle, coming out today, could do also just smile yourself.
