Devin Garrett Townsend è un personaggio abbastanza famoso nel campo del metal, ma fino a poche settimane fa, devo confessare che non me ne ero mai interessato più di tanto. Fondatore degli Strapping Young Lad, inizialmente un progetto solista, amico di Steve Vai, ha suonato con Jason Newsted, Tom Hunting (Exodus), Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel), Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering), polistrumentista, cantante (5 ottave di estensione), amante della musica in generale. Questo Transcendence è il suo diciassettesimo disco in studio, e, devo dire, non è precisamente il mio genere, troppe aperture sinfoniche, sinceramente stucchevoli. Townsend parte da una base heavy metal, e costruisce pezzi anche complessi, seguendo il suo interesse per il progressive e, naturalmente, le sue (e dei suoi collaboratori) capacità tecniche innegabili. Il disco è pieno di sovrastrutture, ridondante e ampolloso, nonostante anche le composizioni, anche queste largamente a cura dello stesso Townsend, siano degne di nota.
La versione "semplice" del disco si chiude con una cover dei Ween, Transdermal Celebration, ma la versione deluxe contiene altri 11 pezzi, molti dei quali in versione demo.
Devin Garrett Townsend is a fairly famous person in the field of metal music, but until a few weeks ago, I must confess that I had not been interested that much. Founder of the Strapping Young Lad, initially a solo project, a friend of Steve Vai, he played with Jason Newsted, Tom Hunting (Exodus), Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel), Anneke van Giersbergen (The Gathering), multi-instrumentalist, singer (5 octaves of extension), a lover of music in general. "Transcendence" is his seventeenth studio album, and, I must say, it's not exactly my thing, too many symphonic openings, frankly a little sickening. Townsend starts from an
heavy metal "base", and builds pieces even complex, following his interest in progressive and, of course, his (and of his collaborators) undeniable technical abilities. The album is full of superstructures, redundant and stilted, despite even the compositions, also these largely by the same Townsend, are worthy of note.
The "simple" version of the album closes with a Ween's cover, "Transdermal Celebration", but the deluxe version contains 11 other pieces, many of them in demo version. And the music doesn't change.
