Zi - Negura Bunget (2016)

Eccoci all'ennesimo disco dei rumeni Negura Bunget, testardamente (dopo litigi e abbandoni) portati avanti dal batterista Negru, all'anagrafe Gabriel Mafa, che purtroppo è morto, a 42 anni, qualche mese fa (unico membro fondatore rimasto nella formazione, è lui quello raffigurato sulla copertina). Un disco che, nelle intenzioni della band, rappresenta il secondo tassello di una trilogia intitolata alla Transilvania (la band è originaria di Timisoara), dopo la prima parte uscita nel 2015, Tau. Con Zi (giorno, in rumeno) la band fa un ulteriore passo verso un mix affascinante di black metal, folk tribale che pesca a piene mani nella tradizione rumena/transilvana, e di un ambient epico e ispirato, che raggiunge forse il suo apice nella traccia finale del disco, la lunga Marea cea mare (Il grande mare), suonato insieme ai conterranei Thy Veils, corroborato da un video pensato e diretto da uno dei membri del combo, Daniel Dorobantu, che si occupa della parte visuale. Molto meno black metal, pochissimo blast beat e cantato growl, molta epicità e atmosfere forse più aperte che horror rispetto al passato, un disco di passaggio che lascia intravedere ulteriori possibilità di progressione. Solo il futuro ci dirà se, mancando un importante tassello, i restanti componenti saranno in grado di mantenersi all'altezza di tale compito.



Here we are at the new (the seventh) album of Negura Bunget, stubbornly (after fights and abandonment) carried on by drummer Gabriel Mafa aka Negru, who unfortunately died at 42 few months ago (the only founding member remaining, is him pictured on the cover). A record that, in the band's intentions, is the second piece of a trilogy called Transylvania (the band originates in Timisoara) Trilogy, after the first release in 2015, "Tau". With "Zi" ("day" in Romanian), the band makes a further step towards a fascinating mix of black metal, tribal folk that is taken with full hands from the Romanian / Transilvanian tradition, and an epic and inspired "ambient" that reaches its apex in the final track of the record, the long "Marea cea mare" (The Great Sea), played together with the countrymen Thy Veils, supported by a video designed and directed by one of the combo members, Daniel Dorobantu, who deals with the visual aspect. Much less black metal, very little blast beat and growl singing, much epicity and atmospheres, perhaps more open mood than the horror one than in the past, a passing album that lets you see further chances of progression. Only the future will tell us if, without a major stakeholder, the remaining components will be able to keep up to that task.
