Quando ci si addentra nel vero underground, bisogna pure farsi guidare. Quando non è una rivista musicale, ci sono gli amici, quelli, magari, di cui conosci i gusti musicali, sai che sono vicini ai tuoi ma non esattamente gli stessi. Ecco che su segnalazione di Beach, arrivano nelle mie orecchie i californiani di Modesto Ravena, che purtroppo per loro, sono omonimi di una all female band pop brasiliana uscita dal locale X Factor (questo nel caso cerchiate notizie). Il terzetto, che si definisce semplicemente post-rock, si mette insieme nel 2012 e per quattro anni, lavora a comporre e de-comporre e ri-comporre quello che, finalmente, diventa il loro debut album dal titolo mitologico di Laocoon. Si autoproclamano pure una band da studio, quindi lavorano senza l'affanno di dover suonare dal vivo. Ecco che il disco è una piccola gemma, che tra l'altro si presenta in due versioni. Quattro movimenti diversi, Teraphim, Valta, Unnok, Carrion, in tutto poco meno di 50 minuti, e poi un altro pezzo che dà il titolo all'album, Laocoon, che però in realtà non è altro che i quattro movimenti uno di seguito all'altro ma "legati" da delle connessioni ambient, una sorta di director's cut, dalla durata totale di un'ora e dieci minuti. Un disco davvero visionario, un'esperienza quasi trascendentale, che di metal ha davvero solo il retrogusto. Ottimo.
When you enter the real underground, you have to be guided. When it's not a music magazine, there are friends, of that, maybe, you know the musical tastes, you know they are close to yours but not exactly the same. Here, on Beach reporting, the band from Modesto, California, Ravena comes into my ears; unfortunately for them, in case you look for some info, they are homonimous of a Brazilian pop combo all-female, that came out from the local X Factor. Come back to Ravena from California, the three musicians, which defines themselves simply post-rock, comes together in 2012 and for four years, they works to compose, de-compose and re-compose what finally becomes their debut album with the mythological title of "Laocoon". They also self-proclaim a studio band, so they work without the bother of having to play live. Here's the album is a small gem, which comes in two versions. Four different movements, "Teraphim", "Valta", "Unnok", "Carrion", all in under 50 minutes, and then another track that gives the title to the album, "Laocoon", which in reality is nothing but the four movements one below, but linked by ambient connections, a kind of director's cut, with a total duration of one hour and ten minutes. A truly visionary record, an almost transcendental experience, that of metal really has only the aftertaste. Great.
