Seguendo il consiglio di uno dei soliti amici, mi sono messo all'ascolto di questa versione rimasterizzata (l'originale è del 2003) del disco di debutto dei mancuniani Oceansize (nome preso dalla quasi omonima canzone dei Jane's Addiction), fino ad oggi, lo confesso, mai sentiti nemmeno nominare. La band ha fatto uscire poi altri tre dischi (tralasciando EP, box set e album dal vivo), per sciogliersi nel 2011, molto probabilmente a causa delle relazioni deteriorate tra i membri, fatto dovuto all'uso di droghe da parte di alcuni di loro. Band altamente tecnica, mi ha fatto pensare immediatamente ad una delle band più sottovalutate della storia, gli Amplifier, anche loro di Manchester, e con i quali gli Oceansize condividevano una grande amicizia (si definivano brother-in-amps, rispettivamente); da notare tra l'altro che Steve Durose, uno dei due chitarristi, al momento dello scioglimento si è unito definitivamente proprio agli Amplifier.
Detto tutto ciò, la bellezza di questa band, probabilmente qui in uno dei suoi picchi creativi, è che è decisamente non catalogabile. Si potrebbero definire progressive (non è sbagliato rintracciare in alcuni loro pezzi un retrogusto genesisiano), post rock naturalmente (anche i Mogwai sono una loro influenza), sperimentali per l'eclettismo, math per la bravura tecnica, addirittura psichedelici per molte divagazioni strumentali, che sconfinano nello space rock. Tracce di Tool ma anche di grunge, ma soprattutto, composizioni musicalmente e melodicamente molto belle, che possono portare in alcuni casi perfino alla commozione. Nel caso, come nel mio, non li conosceste, dovreste riscoprirli.
Following the advice of one of the usual friends, I listened to this remastered version (the original one is from 2003) of the debut album of the Mancunians Oceansize (name taken from the almost homonymous song by Jane's Addiction), up to now, I confess, never even heard of. The band released three more discs (omitting EP, box set and live album), to break up in 2011, most likely due to the deteriorated relationships between members, due to the use of drugs by some of them . Highly technical band, it made me immediately think of one of the most underrated bands in history, the Amplifer, also from Manchester, and with whom the Oceansize shared a great friendship (they called themselves brother-in-amps, respectively); to note among other things that Steve Durose, one of the two guitarists, at the time of the disbanded, has finally joined the Amplifier.
Having said all this, the beauty of this band, probably here in one of its creative peaks, is that it is definitely not catalogable. They could be defined as progressive (it is not wrong to trace a Genesis-esque aftertaste in some of their tracks), post rock of course (even the Mogwai are one of their influence), experimental for their eclecticism, math for the technical skill, even psychedelic for many instrumental digressions, that border into space rock. Traces of Tool but also of grunge, but above all, musically and melodically very beautiful compositions, which can in some cases even lead to move you. In the case, as in mine, you did not know them, you should rediscover them.
