Non è necessario, credo, spiegare la mia devozione a questa artista, a chi mi legge da qualche anno. A chi, invece, capitasse qui per caso, dirò solo che ogni volta che vedo quegli occhioni celesti, ho un tuffo al cuore. Punto.
Il 12 febbraio 2016 è uscito il quarto disco della cantante e musicista canadese Basia Bulat. Nasce come folk singer, ma con il tempo sta provando ad uscire da quella definizione, per aprirsi ad un suono pop di una certa classe, che di sicuro non le manca. Dopo essersi affidata a Tim Kingsbury degli Arcade Fire per la produzione del precedente Tall Tall Shadow, questa volta la biondina si mette nelle mani di Jim James, capobanda del gruppo preferito dal mio co-blogger My Morning Jacket, e si allontana sempre di più dal folk.
Il risultato è, come per il disco precedente, un album che non arriva subito dritto al cuore, come riuscivano a fare, quantomeno nei miei confronti, i primi due Oh, My Darling e Heart of My Own, ma non lasciano più alcun dubbio sulle capacità di songwriter e di performer di Basia Bulat.
C'è da dire anche, ma questo lo sapete tutti benissimo, voi appassionati di musica, che un minimo di evoluzione, così come i personaggi di una serie televisiva ben fatta, è estremamente necessario, altrimenti si rischia di diventare delle cover band di se stessi.
Ecco che gli arrangiamenti sempre spartani, ma decisamente più costruiti, la stratificazione degli strumenti, la tendenza ad inerpicarsi verso vette sempre più complesse con la voce, acquistano un senso. I ripetuti ascolti di Good Advice regalano un'artista che sta viaggiando veloce verso la completa maturità, conscia delle proprie capacità, e costantemente capace di scrivere canzoni memorabili. La cosa è chiara fin dal passaggio dettato dalla seconda ripetizione del verso "can you look me straight in the eye?" (1.42) dell'opener La La Lie: Basia Bulat, folk o pop, è capace di toccare corde che ad altri artisti non riescono a raggiungere in un'intera carriera.
In the Name of, Time, Good Advice, Infamous, Fool, sono alcuni dei pezzi di questo nuovo disco, che sicuramente avranno lo stesso effetto su alcuni di voi. Naturalmente, come dico spesso, solo su quelli che hanno un cuore.

The result is, as with the previous work, an album that does not come right away straight to the heart, as with, at least to me, the first two "Oh, My Darling" and "Heart of My Own", but no longer leaves any doubt about the ability of songwriter and performer of Basia Bulat.
It must be said also, but you all know very well, music lovers, that a minimum of evolution, as well as the characters of a well-made television series, is extremely necessary, otherwise you risk becoming the cover band of themselves.
Here's that the always minimal arrangements, but definitely more built, the layering of the instruments, the tendency to climb towards increasingly complex peaks with her voice, make sense. The repeated listening of "Good Advice" reveals an artist who is traveling fast towards full maturity, conscious of her abilities, and constantly able to write memorable songs. The thing is clear starting from the passage dictated by the second repetition of the verse "can you look me straight in the eye?" (1.42) from the opener "La La Lie": Basia Bulat, folk or pop, is capable of touching the strings that other artists do not achieve in an entire career.
"In the Name of", "Time", "Good Advice", "Infamous", "Fool", are some of the tracks of this new record, which surely will have the same effect on some of you. Of course, as I often say, only for those who have a heart.
