Dopo circa un anno dall'uscita di Vertikal, i Cult of Luna e Julie Christmas (Made Out of Babies, Battle of Mice, appartenente al giro della Neurot), che dovevano incrociarsi ad un festival a Londra, e che si apprezzavano mutualmente, cominciano a "studiarsi" per una collaborazione che da tempo volevano realizzare. Il chitarrista Persson quindi, invia un demo di un pezzo al quale la band sta lavorando alla Christmas, chiedendole di scrivere le liriche e cantarlo, lei lo fa, e la band rimane stupita dal risultato: si decide quindi di scrivere un intero album. La cosa va avanti, ma la particolarità è che la band svedese e la cantante statunitense non si incontreranno personalmente fino all'anno seguente.
In ogni modo, l'8 aprile 2016 esce Mariner, album a tema sull'esplorazione spaziale, un disco dove i Cult of Luna fanno se stessi, in maniera naturalmente "spaziale", e sul quale la Christmas padroneggia le parti cantate con la sua impressionante estensione e la sua aggressività. Il risultato è decisamente positivo, le tracce sono cinque (sei nella versione in vinile), vanno dagli 8 ai 15 minuti, e segnano un altro tassello nella carriera di entrambi i soggetti. Molto belle A Greater Call, The Wreck of S.S. Needle e Cygnus.

In any case, on April 8, 2016 this "Mariner" comes out, a concept album on space exploration, an album where the Cult of Luna are themselves, in a "spatial" way, and on which Christmas command almost all the vocals with her impressive extension and her aggressiveness. The result is very positive, the tracks are five (six in the vinyl version), ranging from 8 to 15 minutes, and mark another step in the career of both subjects. Very beautiful "A Greater Call", "The Wreck of S.S. Needle" and "Cygnus".
