I Tell A Fly - Benjamin Clementine (2017)

Diciamoci la verità, la musica ha sempre avuto bisogno di personaggi di questo tipo. Non voglio dilungarmi troppo, ma cercate in rete e leggetevi la storia della vita di questo 28enne originario di Crystal Palace, Londra. Affascinante. 
La prima volta che mi sono avvicinato alla sua musica, ascoltando il precedente At Least For Now, ho pensato a Antony Hegarty, probabilmente per la propensione alle atmosfere quasi teatrali. Ma devo dire che ascoltando in maniera un po' più approfondita questo suo nuovissimo I Tell A Fly, ci sono un sacco di cose belle, influenze fra le più disparate, inusuali, bellissime canzoni con strutture non ortodosse, e naturalmente, testi incredibilmente elaborati.
C'è veramente di tutto, nella musica e nell'approccio di Benjamin Sainte-Clémentine, come notano grandi critici musicali e alcuni grandi musicisti (David Byrne, Paul McCartney). Vagamente Rufus Wainwright, un fortissimo senso di grandeur, Nina Simone, Léo Ferré, Edith Piaf, tocchi di piano ispirati da Satie e Debussy, ma non solo, influenze che vanno dai cantautori italiani alla soul music, dall'operetta ai grandi chansonnier francesi, dai grandi cantanti classici a Nick Cave e Tom Waits. E poi, le influenze letterarie e poetiche, lui, ex senza tetto ma avido lettore fin da bambino. E una personalità che, senza dubbio, non passa inosservata. 
Un disco sicuramente lontanissimo dal pop, interessantissimo, per un artista del quale sentiremo parlare molto.



Let's tell the truth, music always needed such characters. I do not want to go too far, but have a look into the web and read the story of the life of this 28-year-old native of Crystal Palace, London. Fascinating.
The first time I listened to his music, with the previous "At Least For Now", I thought of Antony Hegarty, probably because of the propensity to the almost theatrical atmospheres. But I must say that by listening a bit more in-depth to this brand new "I Tell A Fly", there are a lot of beautiful things, influences of the most disparate, unusual, beautiful songs with non-orthodox structures, and of course, incredibly elaborate texts.
There is really everything in the music and in Benjamin Sainte-Clémentine's approach, as some great music critics and some great musicians (David Byrne, Paul McCartney) notes. Vaguely Rufus Wainwright, a very strong sense of grandeur, Nina Simone, Léo Ferré, Edith Piaf, touches of piano inspired by Satie and Debussy, but not only; influences ranging from Italian songwriters to soul music, operetta to great French chansonniers, from great classical singers to Nick Cave and Tom Waits. And then, the literary and poetic influences, he, formerly homeless but avid reader since childhood. And a personality that, without a doubt, does not go unnoticed.
An album definitely far from pop, very interesting, by an artist which, in the future, will be very famous.
