Se mi conoscete da molto tempo avrete sicuramente notato che in vecchiaia, forse per bilanciare alcune aperture verso artisti pop, ho intrapreso una sorta di viaggio dentro la musica più estrema, anche metal estremo, che in realtà avevo sempre praticato poco. O, semplicemente, provo ad ascoltare tutto. Come che sia, eccomi per la prima volta al cospetto degli svedesi di Goteborg (un luogo che evidentemente mantiene prolificità e misticismo, esattamente come ai tempi di Ragnar Lodbrok) At the Gates, universalmente riconosciuti come tra i progenitori del melodic death metal. Attivi inizialmente dal 1990 al 1996, sciolti e poi riformati nel 2007, arrivano fino a noi e recentemente (maggio 2018) hanno fatto uscire il loro sesto disco, dal titolo come sempre, mistico/poetico, To Drink From the Night Itself. Niente da dire, è quello che ci si aspetta, canzoni robuste, cantato death grunts del fondatore Tomas "Tompa" Lindberg (anche professore di Studi Sociali), sezione ritmica diligente e intrecci chitarristici degni della migliore scuola classic heavy metal (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest); stacchi acustici giusto per tirare il fiato, ma anche per infondere quell'aura di epicità e drammaticità, che caratterizzano il loro stile.

Nothing to say, is what you expect, robust songs, sung death grunts of the founder Tomas "Tompa" Lindberg (also professor of Social Studies), diligent rhythm section and guitar intertwining worthy of the best classic heavy metal school (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest); acoustic chunks just to draw your breath, but also to instill that aura of epic and drama, which characterize their style.
