Il settimo album dei californiani di San Diego As I Lay Dying, è il disco della ripartenza, dopo la complessa disavventura del leader e cantante Tim Lambesis, una di quelle vicende che si pensa possano esistere solo nei film (di Tarantino, oppure anche di Kaurismaki): divertitevi (eufemismo) a leggerla su Wikipedia. A distanza di sette anni dal precedente Awakened, anche solo a giudicare dai titoli delle tracce, sembra uno di quei dischi di "rinascita". Lambesis è sicuramente uno che ha commesso degli errori, e i suoi quattro pards lo hanno perdonato, così dicono le note stampa. Il disco è di quelli che sottolinea quanto il genere metalcore possa essere scontato, ma piacere ugualmente a chi, come me, apprezza tutto, ma ogni tanto ha bisogno di una scarica di adrenalina e di chitarre "grattugiate". Stop and go, chitarre compresse con qualche strizzata d'occhio perfino al djent, alternanza tra cantato harsh e clean, aperture melodiche, citazioni alla Slayer. Il tutto eseguito senza sbavature.
The seventh album of the San Diego Californians As I Lay Dying, is the album of the restart, after the complex misadventure of the leader and singer Tim Lambesis, one of those events that are thought to exist only in movies (of Tarantino, or even of Kaurismaki): have fun (euphemism) reading it on Wikipedia. Seven years after the previous Awakened, even just judging by the track titles, it looks like one of those "rebirth" records. Lambesis is certainly one who has made mistakes, and his four pards have forgiven him, so say the press notes. The album is one of those that underlines how the metalcore genre can be taken for granted, but equally pleasing to those who, like me, appreciate everything, but every now and then they need a rush of adrenaline and "grated" guitars. Stop and go, compressed guitars with a few winks even to the djent, alternation between sung harsh and clean, melodic openings, quotes to Slayer. All done without smudging.
