Lonely People with Power - Deafheaven (2025)

Sesto album in studio per i Deafheaven, una band che, anche solo a giudicare da quante volte ve ne ho parlato su questo blog e da quante volte li ho citati, sono senza dubbio una delle mie band preferite, quantomeno degli ultimi 10 anni. Una delle cose belle di questa band, rileggetevi la mia recensione del precedente Infinite Granite, è che sembrano fregarsene totalmente della loro fan base, in termini di direzione musicale. Provo a spiegarmi: se col precedente avevano spiazzato tutti non usando praticamente quasi mai il (fantastico) growling di George Clarke, stavolta fanno il contrario (e ogni volta il suo stile, quando è aggressivo, sembra sempre più devastante). Detto questo, particolare non irrilevante, la voce di George è decisamente una parte importantissima del suono dei Deafheaven, il resto del disco è bellissimo, riesce, probabilmente ancora meglio che con i precedenti, a fondere black metal, shoegaze con melodie ricercate e sublimi, nell'ultima parte si concede qualche sperimentazione (Incidental II e Incidental III con le voci di Jae Matthews dei Boy Harsher e di Paul Banks degli Interpol), e si candida ad essere una delle migliori cose del 2025.

Sixth studio album for Deafheaven, a band that, even just judging by how many times I've talked about them on this blog and how many times I've mentioned them, are without a doubt one of my favorite bands, at least in the last 10 years. One of the great things about this band, reread my review of the previous Infinite Granite, is that they seem to totally give a damn about their fan base, in terms of musical direction. Let me explain: if with the previous one they had surprised everyone by practically never using George Clarke's (fantastic) growling, this time they do the opposite (and each time his style, when it's aggressive, seems more and more devastating). That said, and not an insignificant detail, George's voice is definitely a very important part of Deafheaven's sound, the rest of the album is beautiful, it manages, probably even better than the previous ones, to blend black metal, shoegaze with refined and sublime melodies, in the last part it allows itself some experimentation (Incidental II and Incidental III with the voices of Jae Matthews of Boy Harsher and Paul Banks of Interpol), and it is a candidate to be one of the best things of 2025.
