Era il 1988, quando molti appassionati di musica, anche molto più dura di quella proposta da Edie Brickell and New Bohemians, rimasero fulminati dal singolo What I Am, e corsero a comprare, su disco o cassetta, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, scoprendo che c'era anche un'altra canzone, forse più bella, Circle. Girava tutto intorno ad un rock venato di folk. Dopo un paio d'anni, si seppe che la cantante si era sposata nientemeno che con Paul Simon. I più, da allora, ne hanno perso le tracce, e invece, lei ha continuato a fare musica, saltuariamente anche con gli stessi New Bohemians (The Live Montauk Sessions, 1999, Stranger Things, 2006). La band si è riunita per concerti sporadici anche dopo il 2006, e l'anno scorso in aprile, hanno suonato tre concerti esauriti a Oak Cliff, un sobborgo di Dallas (dov'è nata Edie), per raccogliere fondi per una scuola di musica, sempre di Oak Cliff, dove il chitarrista della band Kenny Withrow, insegna. Durante le prove per questi tre concerti, la band, evidentemente in stato di grazia, ha scritto nuove canzoni. Dopo i concerti, hanno deciso di registrarle, e il tutto si è concluso in pochi giorni. It was 1988, when many music lovers, even of music much harder than the one proposed by Edie Brickell and New Bohemians, were struck by the single What I Am, and ran to buy, on disc or cassette, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, discovering that there was also another song, perhaps more beautiful, Circle. The band gathered for sporadic concerts even after 2006, and last year in April, they played three sold out concerts in Oak Cliff, a suburb of Dallas (where Edie was born), to raise funds for a music school , also from Oak Cliff, where the band's guitarist Kenny Withrow teaches. During the rehearsals for these three concerts, the band, evidently in a state of grace, wrote new songs. After the concerts, they decided to register them, and it all ended in a few days. As Brickell herself says, the album is not very homogeneous, and "skips" between various genres. But potentially, it shows that there is still something to be said, albeit with a slightly old school way.
