Come capita in casi come questi, monolite è la definizione che calza meglio a proposito di questo nuovo disco, l'ottavo della band di Oakland, California, una delle due creature di Matt Pike. Il disco, ancora prodotto da Kurt Ballou, è dichiaratamente un tributo a Lemmy Kilmister, ed è davvero un altro passo in avanti per questa band probabilmente un poco sottovalutata rispetto all'altra di Pike (gli Sleep). Un suono potentissimo, un universo lirico visionario e quasi folle, una precisione chirurgica dei tre musicisti, ugualmente bravissimi, e un incedere tellurico, per un disco che è veramente metal, e nient'altro. La summa di tutte le influenze, sludge, doom, stoner, thrash, speed, continua a salire di qualità e serve ai tre per comporre dischi di un livello superiore. Vi basti, su tutte, Sanctioned Annihilation (Andy O'Connor su Pitchfork la definisce la loro Sign of the Southern Cross), 10 minuti e 29 di heavy metal allo stato lavico.
As happens in cases like these, monolith is the definition that best fits this new record, the eighth for the band of Oakland, California, one of the two creatures of Matt Pike. The album, still produced by Kurt Ballou, is admittedly a tribute to Lemmy Kilmister, and is really another step forward for this band, probably a little underestimated compared to the other by Pike (the Sleep). A powerful sound, a lyrical universe visionary and almost insane, a surgical precision of the three musicians, equally talented, and a telluric pace, for a record that is really metal, and nothing else. The sum of all influences, sludge, doom, stoner, thrash, speed, continues to rise in quality and serves the three to compose a record of a higher level. All you need is listen to Sanctioned Annihilation (Andy O'Connor on Pitchfork defines it as their Sign of the Southern Cross), 10 minutes and 29 minutes of heavy metal in the lava state.
