Settimo disco in studio per la band olandese; siccome è la prima volta che ve ne parlo, comincerò col dirvi la nota più curiosa ma anche interessante e moderna sulla band stessa. I Within Temptation, infatti, sono stati fondati dalla cantante Sharon den Adel e dal chitarrista Robert Westerholt, nati nella stessa cittadina olandese, conosciutisi durante le scuole superiori; i due fanno coppia da tempo, hanno tre figli insieme, e dal 2011, Robert ha deciso di rimanere nella band solo come musicista da studio e non partecipare ai tour, per stare a casa con i figli. Chiusa questa parentesi che mi è parsa degna di nota, andiamo al disco e allo stile. I Within Temptation, che esordirono nel 1997 con Enter, suonavano un genere piuttosto diverso da quello attuale, più gotico e vagamente doom, incluso l'uso del cantato in growl alternato alla voce molto bella di Sharon. Quello che suonano adesso è un metal sinfonico molto melodico, e, anche a detta della stessa Sharon in alcune interviste promozionali, molto influenzato dal pop attuale. Onestamente, il metal di questo tipo non è il mio preferito, e spesso trovo che rischi sempre di sconfinare nel ridicolo, ma mi pare di poter dire che questo Resist è la prova che con attenzione e passione, si può fare degnamente anche metal sinfonico. Canzoni compatte, coinvolgenti, belle. Partecipazioni straordinarie per Jacoby Shaddix dei Papa Roach (The Reckoning), Anders Fridén degli In Flames (Raise Your Banner) e Jasper Steverlinck degli Arid (Firelight).
Seventh studio album for the Dutch band; since it is the first time that I speak to you about it, I will begin by telling you the most curious but also interesting and modern note about the band itself. The Within Temptation, in fact, was founded by singer Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt, both born in the same Dutch town, known each other during high school; the two are together for a long time, they have three children together, and since 2011, Robert has decided to remain in the band only as a studio musician and not participate in the tours, to stay at home with their children. Closed this parenthesis that seemed to me worthy of note, let's go to the record and to the style. Within Temptation, which debuted in 1997 with Enter, played a rather different genre than the current one, more Gothic and vaguely Doom, including the use of the growl sung alternating with the very beautiful voice of Sharon. What they play now is a very melodic symphonic metal, and, also according to Sharon herself in some promotional interviews, much influenced by the current pop. Honestly, this kind of metal is not my favorite, and I often find that who plays it, always risk trespassing the ridiculous, but I think I can say that this Resist is the proof that with care and passion, symphonic metal can be done worthily.
