Così, a volte vanno le cose. L'amico Damiano mi segnala una band con una canzone che non riesce a togliersi dalla testa. Prendo il nome ed inizio a cercare. Scopro una band che avrei dovuto segnalargli io, non il contrario. Gli Hot Snakes, da San Diego, California, capitanati da Rick Froberg, chitarra e voce, e John Reis, chitarra e cori, sono formati da musicisti statunitensi di lungo corso, provenienti da esperienze post-hardcore quali quelle dei Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu e Rocket from the Crypt. Gli stessi Hot Snakes si formano nell'ormai lontanissimo 1999, si sciolgono nel 2005, e si rimettono insieme nel 2011, arrivando fino ad oggi, con questo quarto album in studio, intitolato Jericho Sirens, che li ha visti tornare in studio dopo 14 anni. Il risultato è un eccitante raccolta di 10 canzoni brevissime e pressoché perfette. L'esperienza si sente non solo nella padronanza tecnica, ma nella struttura delle tracce e nell'alternanza strofa/ritornello, senza dimenticare che i testi non sono assolutamente trascurabili. Con un etica ancora oggi totalmente DIY, questo è un disco che ha molto da insegnare. Per farvi capire bene, ogni tanto sembra di ascoltare i Mudhoney, ma qui ci sono canzoni che sono superiori ad una buona parte della produzione della band di Seattle.
So, sometimes things go in a strange way. The friend Damiano points me a band with a song that can not get out of his head. I take the name and start looking. I discover a band that I should have point him myself, not the other way around. The Hot Snakes, from San Diego, California, led by Rick Froberg, guitar and vocals, and John Reis, guitar and backing vocals, are made up of long-time American musicians from post-hardcore experiences like Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu and Rocket from the Crypt. The same Hot Snakes are formed in the now very distant 1999, they disbanded in 2005, and get together again in 2011, arriving until today, with this fourth studio album, entitled Jericho Sirens, who saw them return to the studio after 14 years. The result is an exciting collection of 10 very short and almost perfect songs. The experience can be heard not only in technical mastery, but in the structure of the tracks and the alternation verse/chorus/verse, without forgetting that the texts are not negligible. With an ethics still today totally DIY, this is a record that has a lot to teach. To make you understand well, sometimes it seems to listen to the Mudhoney, but here are songs that are superior to a good part of the production of the band from Seattle.
