Miss Universe è il disco di debutto di Nilufer Yanya, 23enne inglese (padre di chiare origini turche), dopo tre EP e i primi approcci su SoundCloud. Segnalata da Sharon Van Etten (per la quale ha aperto alcune date dell'ultimo tour, purtroppo non quella che ho visto io), la giovane è figlia di due artisti visuali, e cresce tra la musica tradizionale turca prediletta dal padre, e dalla classica preferita dalla madre. Comincia ad ascoltare rock, impara a suonare la chitarra a 12 anni, e dopo il debutto già citato su SoundCloud, rifiuta l'offerta di unirsi ad una band tutta femminile per concentrarsi sulla sua musica. Il disco è eccellente, eccitante, in bilico tra indie rock, trip hop, jazz, soul e chissà cos'altro, la voce eclettica con un bellissimo accento brit, la scrittura sapiente come se di anni ne avesse 63.

Miss Universe is the debut album by Nilufer Yanya, a 23 year old Englishwoman (father of clear Turkish origins), after three EPs and the first musical approaches in SoundCloud. Reported by Sharon Van Etten (for which she opened some dates of the last tour, unfortunately not the one I saw), the young girl is the daughter of two visual artists, and grows between her dad's favorite traditional Turkish music, and classic music preferred by the mother. She starts listening to rock, learns to play the guitar at 12, and after the debut already mentioned on SoundCloud, she refuses the offer to join an all-female band to concentrate on her own music. The record is excellent, exciting, poised between indie rock, trip hop, jazz, soul and who knows what else, the eclectic voice with a beautiful British accent, the wise songwriting as if she were 63 years old, and not 23.
