Quinto disco della fenomenale artista canadese, la cui uscita è stata ritardata di quasi un anno, pare per almeno due motivi principali: Grimes ha quasi contemporaneamente lavorato sull'album successivo, e la morte della sua manager Lauren Valencia nel luglio del 2019. Il titolo dell'album è un gioco di parole tra il prefisso femminile inglese "Miss" (signorina), e le parole "misanthrope" (misantropo) e "Anthropocene" (Antropocene), quest'ultimo un neologismo reso popolare nel 2000 dal Nobel per la chimica Paul J. Crutzen che fu proposto per indicare l'attuale era geologica terrestre. L'album è un concept su una "dea antropomorfa dei cambiamenti climatici" ispirata alla mitologia romana e ai cattivi dei fumetti. La scelta di un personaggio malvagio (nel quale la stessa Grimes si identifica) è stata dettata dalla cattiva reputazione costruitole addosso dai media a causa della sua relazione con Elon Musk. Detto tutto questo, la musica. Toni più scuri rispetto al precedente Art Angels, venato di industrial, dimostra comunque l'assoluta maestria di Grimes nel padroneggiare un pop assolutamente all'avanguardia. Una voce spesso adolescenziale che canta tematiche adulte, e un tappeto sonoro che porta la dance-pop ad un livello superiore, spesso intrecciandola con i più diversi generi musicali. The title the album is a play on words between the English female prefix "Miss", and the words "misanthrope" and "Anthropocene", the latter a neologism popularized in 2000 by the Nobel Prize in Chemistry Paul J. Crutzen who proposed it in order to name the current Earth geological era. The album is a concept about an "anthropomorphic goddess of climate change" inspired by Roman mythology and comic book villains. The choice of an evil character (in which Grimes identifies herself) was dictated by the bad reputation built up on her by the media because of her relationship with Elon Musk. Having said all this, the music. Darker tones than the previous Art Angels, veined with industrial, however, demonstrates the absolute mastery of Grimes in mastering an absolutely avant-garde pop. An often adolescent voice that sings adult themes, and a sound carpet that takes dance-pop to a higher level, often interweaving it with the most diverse musical genres. Always intriguing.
