Pensato come colonna sonora del suo gioco di ruolo da tavolo Myfarog (acronimo di Mythic Fantasy Role-playing Game), ecco il dodicesimo disco in studio sotto il moniker Burzum di Louis Cachet nato Kristian Vikernes e conosciuto artisticamente anche come Varg Vikernes: la sua parziale storia, e quella della scena black metal norvegese, sono raccontate approssimativamente anche nel film Lords of Chaos. Ora, ormai da tempo Burzum si è allontanato dal black metal, e si è avvicinato alla ambient: gli ultimi lavori, nonostante ripetute dichiarazioni di intento sulla definitiva cessazione dell'attività musicale, sono effettivamente da catalogare come ambient. Questo nuovo lavoro è un po' diverso: si sente che è un'accozzaglia di bozze, di schizzi musicali, l'opera di qualcuno che ha molto tempo a disposizione, e quando ne ha voglia, si mette a registrare quel che gli passa per la mente, nel suo studio di registrazione personale. Eterogeneo, molto eterogeneo, sempre lontano dal metal, ma con echi lontani, pesca a piene mani dalla musica barocca, da quella folkloristica scandinava, intrecciandola con l'elettronica e, appunto, la ambient, il tutto con un mood medieval-fantasy. Nonostante tutto questo, e nonostante l'opinione personale su un personaggio così controverso e piuttosto disdicevole, si capisce che di musica ne sa, e che molto probabilmente, sarebbe ancora in grado di dire la sua, se ne avesse la voglia e la forza. Per i più curiosi, un disco totalmente fuori da ogni schema.
Designed as the soundtrack of his board role-playing game Myfarog (acronym for Mythic Fantasy Role-playing Game), here is the twelfth studio album under the moniker Burzum of Louis Cachet born Kristian Vikernes and artistically known also as Varg Vikernes: his partial history, and that of the Norwegian black metal scene, are also roughly told in the film Lords of Chaos. Now, for some time now Burzum has moved away from black metal, and has approached the ambient music: the latest works, despite repeated declarations of intent on the definitive cessation of the musical activity, are actually to be classified as ambient. This new work is a little different: you feel that it is a hodgepodge of drafts, musical sketches, the work of someone who has a lot of time available, and when he wants to, he starts to record what passes for him the mind, in his personal recording studio. Heterogeneous, very heterogeneous, always far from metal, but with distant echoes, fishing with full hands from baroque music, from Scandinavian folk music, intertwining it with electronics and, indeed, the ambient, all with a medieval-fantasy mood. Despite all this, and despite the personal opinion of such a controversial and rather unseemly character, it is clear that he knows about music, and that most likely, he would still be able to have his say, if he had the desire and strength. For the more curious, an album totally out of any scheme.
