On Circles - Caspian (2020)

Quinto album per la band di Beverly, Massachusetts. Otto tracce in larga parte strumentali (solo su Nostalgist c'è il cantato dell'ospite Kyle Durfey dei Piano Becomes the Teeth, poi la band canta su un'altra traccia), atmosfere create da un robusto shoegaze, che si intreccia con un mood post-rock, con elementi di metal, elettronica, noise ed ambient. Ben quattro le chitarre che si interfacciano per generare momenti davvero emozionanti, ma ci sono sorprendenti inserti di sax, e perfino del violoncello di un'altra ospite d'eccezione, Jo Quail, oltre al mandolino suonato dal membro fondatore Calvin Joss. Nonostante la band abbia in gran parte superato la perdita dell'ex bassista Chris Friedrich, del 2013, questo disco "parla" di riflessioni sul senso del fare musica e della contemporanea necessità di avere di che vivere. Riflessioni che spesso, girano in tondo, formando cerchi. Il disco, pur, come detto, con pochissime liriche (l'altra traccia con un cantato è la conclusiva semi-title track Circles on Circles), riesce a rendere bene l'idea di queste riflessioni.

Eight largely instrumental tracks (only on Nostalgist there is the singing of the guest Kyle Durfey of Piano Becomes the Teeth, and the band sing on another track), atmospheres created by a robust shoegaze, which is intertwined with a post-rock mood, with elements of metal, electronics, noise and ambient. There are four guitars that interface to generate truly exciting moments, but there are surprising sax inserts, and even the cello of another exceptional guest, Jo Quail, in addition to the mandolin played by the founding member Calvin Joss. Although the band has largely overcome the loss of former bassist Chris Friedrich in 2013, this record "speaks" of reflections on the meaning of making music and the contemporary need to have something to eat. Reflections that often are turning around, forming circles. The album, although, as mentioned, with very few lyrics (the other singing track is the final semi-title track Circles on Circles), manages to give a good idea of ​​these reflections.
