Recensire ogni nuovo disco della cantautrice canadese, non è facile per me. Siamo al quinto disco, e ogni volta bisogna ammettere che i primi due erano prodotti ruvidi, ma che ti prendevano il cuore letteralmente tra le mani. Come ogni artista, ma pure come ogni essere umano, Barbara Josephine Bulat conosciuta come Basia, nel corso della sua carriera ha cercato di evolversi, di cambiare pur mantenendo il cuore nel posto giusto. Per gli ultimi due dischi, si è messa nelle mani di Jim James, si proprio quello dei My Morning Jacket, per cercare una strada onesta verso un pop d'autore. Il risultato, così come per il precedente Good Advice, è meno toccante dei già citati primi dischi, ma c'è da dire che con questo Are You In Love? si nota una progressione che oserei definire "emozionale": si, la musica è più raffinata rispetto agli esordi, pur rimanendo lo-fi, ma Basia riesce ad esprimere meglio quello che vuole trasmettere con le sue canzoni. Molte tracce sono toccanti ed emozionanti, gli arrangiamenti aiutano e vanno nella direzione giusta, lei stessa finalmente riesce ad esprimere anche tutta la sua tecnica vocale (No Control), senza più timori. Molto bene.

For the last two records, she put herself in the hands of Jim James, it is precisely the guy from My Morning Jacket, to look for a path to a classy folk / pop. The results, like for the previous Good Advice, it's less touching than the aforementioned first records, but it must be said that with this Are you in love? there is a progression that I would dare to call "emotional": yes, the music is more refined than at the beginning, while remaining lo-fi, but Basia manages to better express what she wants to give with her songs. Many tracks are touching and exciting, the arrangements goes in the right direction, she herself finally manages to express all her vocal technique (No Control), without fear. Very well.
