No pain. The world is a wonderful whisper for those who can listen, if necessary in silence.

Northern Lights

Solstafir + Myrkur + Arstidir, Locomotiv Club, Bologna - 1/12/2017

In time (9 PM), then opens the Arstidir, which are in three, without drums; to describe them I could bother Simon & Garfunkel and the Kings of Convenience, and the abundant half hour runs away pleasantly with beautiful melodies and vocal plots. For the last 2/3 tracks they were joined by Grimsi, Solstafir's drummer. Well done.

Quick stage change, and here is Myrkur. The three musicians (bass, guitar, drums) are dressed in black and hooded, and will remain like this for the duration of the set. She has a white dress that immediately contrasts with the rest. The setlist is in balance between the two discs, and, even more than on the records, it is (precisely) the contrast that makes the strength of this project. The three musicians plays in an almost "ancient" way, at the black metal level, while Amalie's voice is used at 95% in "clean" mode, leaving very little space to growling. She hides in the lights, juggles guitar and other traditional instruments, and the audience appreciates. It is confirmed an interesting reality, also live.

Another quick change of stage, and here are the Solstafir. Solid, with a nice sound, perhaps a little static apart from Addi, who is nice and jokes with the audience between one track and another, the live performance is good and very close to that of the record. The setlist prefers the last two records, but also pick up a few tracks from their repertoire. The public, which we can estimate within the two hundred presences, seems satisfied. The genre proposed by them, we have gutted in the review of the last Berdreyminn, is particular: it is not metal, but it comes from there, it is not hard rock, but fishing from there, so it is to be heard. Even live, if it happens.

Real Big Sky

Emma Ruth Rundle + Jaye Jayle, Kino Siska, Lubiana - 29/11/2017

Eccola. Emma. Saluta in maniera silenziosa, sembra sinceramente emozionata.

The Kino Siska, as the name implies, is a cinema, which also adapts to a concert hall, and if I understand correctly, it has at least two rooms. This one where the concert will take place tonight is medium-small, it will not be full, and I could estimate the spectators around a hundred. Time to take a look at the merchandise, not bad, and here Jaye Jayle get on stage. They are four and they work by subtraction, they come from Kentucky and the guitarist/singer Evan Patterson, voice Lanegan-esque and guitar technique not to be underestimated, underlines that "there are no castles in Kentucky", referring to that of Ljubljana. Theirs is a rock with dark veins, deconstructed to the bone, but that leaves its mark: we will follow them in the future. The set takes about forty minutes.

Here she is. Emma. Gathered hair, guitar picks up, arrives on stage, declares her name and starts with a goosebumps version of Arms I Know So Well, and for me it could end here. If it's true that this girl is 24, three bands in her past, three solo albums and a new split with Jaye Jayle, and a huge talent, honestly, I do not know what her limit might be. Another song alone with her guitar, and then Jaye Jayle come back to the stage to accompany her, they are the backing band, with the only inversion of Neal and Corey between synth and drums. The sound becomes more full-bodied, and she leaves ample space for the other instruments, she is neither selfish nor exhibitionist, she makes herself help at the vocals by Evan, how to say, she is interested in the final result. And, indeed, the result is an hour of music that could be defined, as they have already done before, dark folk, music that exudes existential suffering, which draws from heavier rock and even metal, incorporates folk, noise, and at the end spits out wonderful songs, played divinely, and punctuated by the voice of Emma, a warm and velvety timbre, used perfectly, that precisely, often sings of things that make her suffer, and generate a delicious short circuit. The audience is kidnapped, time passes quickly, and the band comes down from the stage. ERR returns to the stage alone, plays a track from the last split, and then asks what we choose between Shadows of My Name and Real Big Sky: the first one wins, but I was hoping it was a trick. She greets silently, seems genuinely excited. A star was born. It was worth it to come here.

Show Yourself

Mastodon + Red Fang + Russian Circles, Munchenbryggeriet, Stoccolma - 19/11/2017

Bravi.

We start with Russian Circles, for an abundant half hour, convincing as on record, precise, powerful, sometimes dreamlike. Well done.
Next, the Red Fang, funny, but also good, less evocative music but that crushes.
And here we are, finally with Mastodon, I can resist despite my very precarious physical condition, because at least for a few tracks I finally have to see them. And what I see, and I hear, answers some questions I had asked myself in the past. The band from Atlanta, Georgia is not poor at all, on the contrary. Their tracks are reproposed with rough but perfect sounds, and the power emanating from the recordings is as it is live. The point that seemed, from various testimonies, sore, that of the voices, did not seem to me such a big problem: probably the guys have worked on it, and, inevitably, the only one that can make some notes is Brann, who however, playing the drums, it's not so unemployed.

I resist a few, as I said earlier because of an illness, but what I saw I liked it. I lose an entire encore of six tracks played together with Scott Kelly, but you can not have everything from life: we'll see each other again.

So Falls the World

Ulver, Botanique, Bruxelles - 16/11/2017

Stavolta l'ho organizzata bene.

9,15 PM sharp, and here they are, a stage full of instruments, laser games that draw subjects related to the songs, a tendency to warm colors (blue, purple). The setlist is the one of "The Assassination of Julius Caesar", with some small exchanges (Southern Gothic after Nemoralia, then 1969 and So Falls the World, Rolling Stone, Transverberation in its place, Angelus Novus and closing as per on disc with Coming Home), and the sound performance is perfect, even too much, if it were not for some variations on guitar from Stian Westerhus, a complex that gives the impression of something too packaged and not spontaneous. The only drawback is the voice of Kristoffer Rygg, often suffering. An encore made of two new songs, Bring Out Your Dead and Echo Chamber (Room of Tears), which seem to remain on the subject, and we remains under an hour and a half. I do not hold back for the Thot.

In Your Parasol

Queens of the Stone Age + Broncho, Unipol Arena, Bologna - 4/11/2017

21.15 the band of Josh Homme, of which I remember the infinite pedals, during the first concert of Kyuss that I saw (in 1994), goes on stage, a huge stage with a show of lights to take your breath away, and attacks "If I Had a Tail", followed closely by "Monsters in the Parasol", which gives me a bump.
Now, you must know that, concurrently with the event, there was the Siena-Livorno football match, valid for the Serie C / Lega Pro championship, group A, a very important clash at the top. And, it happens, that someone "broadcast" it on Facebook live. Friends present at the concert will argue that I did not understand anything, because more intent to see the game that the concert. Well, apart that everyone has its own priorities, you must believe what you want: what I will tell you is that since the same night, I was stunned reading comments to say the least enthusiastic about the concert.
What I have come up with from the evening is that Josh Homme has a boundless ego, and probably sometimes gets caught up with delusions of omnipotence. I did not like his chats (too often a bit like a bully), I did not like the glitz especially the lighting system (or rather, the lights were beautiful) as a counterpoint to a certain lack of raw music and performance intensity, I was not exalted by the setlist and, but this does not depend precisely on the band, I did not like the acoustics at all, a problem that, experience teaches us, the Unipol Arena depends on who is at the mixer (and that night there was someone who could not make us heard a fuck), I didn't like the two (2!!) drums solo.
In my humble opinion, a confirmation of the weakness of the last album; Josh Homme and his pards have probably decided that they want to follow Foo Fighters' footsteps, and succeed globally. There is nothing wrong with this, but the FF it's as if they had declared it from the beginning, while the QOTSA initially (I know that when I do so I can become unbearable, but I remember literally doing the races to go to see them on the first of July 1999 in Jesolo at the Beach Bum Festival, where they opened the afternoon - at 6 PM! -, tour of the first disc namesake, and the coordinates were quite different), seemed to have other intentions.

So, if the path is this, I quit.

Farewell (Mona Lisa)

The Dillinger Escape Plan + Ovo + Zeus, Zona Roveri, Bologna - 1/07/2017

The local Zeus! are the opener, with prank and their math rock, reminiscent of Battles, after them are on stage the OvO from Ravenna, of which I have read many times but that in the end, I have never been able to listen to anything. Not bad, they definitely leave the mark, their sludge / death / doom is not usual to find in Italy.

The strong plate arrives at about 10 PM, and the setlist, which this time goes over the sixty minutes in abundance, incorporates the prized pieces: Prancer, the "radiophonic" duo Milk Lizard and Black Bubblegum, several extracts from the last Dissociation of course, then Panasonic Youth, Farewell, Mona Lisa, Sunshine the Werewolf and the closing with 43% Burnt. The gig is always of a higher category than the rest of the bands, but if I have to be honest, I have perceived an intensity lower than in the past, perhaps a little tiredness. I want to think so, to consider them so honest intellectually, to understand that the moment of farewell has arrived. We will remember them with joy and devastation.

La peccatrice

The Sinner - Sviluppato da Derek Simonds - Stagione 1 (8 episodi; USA Network) - 2017

Upstate New York, Stati Uniti.

Staremo a vedere.

Intrigued by an article where the intense acting performance of Jessica Biel was incensed in the role of Cora Tannetti, I "drank" this self-contained miniseries, based on the novel by the German writer Petra Hammersfahr. And I must say that I was extremely satisfied, coming to define it "a less philosophical Rectify", but with good intensity. The two characters that support the story are precisely that of Cora, actually interpreted in an extraordinary way by a beautiful Jessica Biel, and that of the detective Ambrose, played by a revived Bill Pullman, which I saw with great pleasure in a role more than convincing. Twin Peaks has done school, and we can see it also from "The Sinner", but the result is interesting and the vision is flowing. Critics have appreciated, so much that USA Network and the production are reflecting on how to give a following to the series, even if the original story stops there where it stops the first season. We'll see.

Labbra blu

Blue Lips - Tove Lo (2017)

Dal punto di vista lirico, la signorina svedese descrive anche parte di sé, anche emozionalmente, seppure il linguaggio sia forte e sboccato ("Let me be your guide when you eat my pussy out / ’Cause I’ve had one or two, even a few  /Yeah, more than you", e prendetela così, senza traduzione). Brava.

And here it is, the second part of the concept started with Lady Wood last year, and that Tove Lo had widely announced (the "alternative" title is, in fact, Lady Wood Phase II). This time the two parts of the record are Light Beam and Pitch Black, and together they describe "highs, lows and ultimate demise of a relationship". From a lyrical point of view, the Swedish lady also describes part of herself, even emotionally, even if the language is strong and foul-mouthed ("Let me be your guide when you eat my pussy out / 'Cause I've had one or two, even a few / Yeah, more than you", from Bitches). From the musical point of view we are not very far from the previous record, we are from the parts of an electronic pop dance, but, at least in my opinion, refined, tasty, with a nice nose for the melodies, wide references to the 80s, very pleasant, and with the voice of Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson who flies over, and embellishes everything, even going to provoke some thrills here and there. The girl really knows what she is doing, and, having no hair on her tongue, she seems to me to be a healthy carrier of a sort of second feminist revolution, less politically sided but perhaps more pragmatic. Brava.

Il giardino

The Garden - Carla Dal Forno (2017)

Possono piacere tantissimo, o annoiare a morte. A voi.

New EP for the Australian female singer, transplanted in Berlin, Carla Dal Forno, whose debut last year aroused the excitement of the entire specialized press, so I can not fail to say a few words about it (and not because I consider myself specialized, at the opposite).
The girl either loves the dark madly, or has never heard it and believes she has discovered it. Seriously, the atmospheres are particular, because (dark pop defines them as Pitchfork) the tracks are based on percussion and bass, particularly dark but never ghostly, like others of female singer-songwriters that we could easily cite (I've already done it in the review of her You Know What It's Like), but that become (in fact) pop trough her voice, which although deliberately mono-tone, it is definitely velvety. Compositions of classical construction, vaguely dramatic, made dreamlike by the voice. They may like you very much, or bore you to death. Up to you.

Regni indegni

Kingdoms Disdained - Morbid Angel (2017)

Line-up completely revolutionized (back Steve Tucker, bass and vocals, brand new Scott Fuller on drums and Dan Vadim Von on the "secondary" guitar - you can not compete with Trey Azagthoth, now the only survivor of the long history of Morbid Angel), here is the ninth disc of the band of Tampa, Florida. Disc that "returns" in a certain way to classic death metal, which they put into practice among the first, along with the Cannibal Corpse, a record that certainly shows that, despite the 35 years of activity, despite the line-up changes, even in a genre like this one, experience and mastery can make the difference. Powerful album, with Trey's guitar that sound gigantic, both in rhythm and solos, together with the powerful voice of Tucker, again, pure power. Good performance of the new drummer, former Annihilated (curious note: he was born when the band was already in business, just before the legendary debut Altars of Madness came out), which also contributed to the songwriting in some songs.
Lyrics that, as the band members themselves have said, take inspiration from "social events that are occurring through time, repeatedly", always from a "third person" perspective, claiming to seek neutrality. But, reading some of them, one would not say; and I say it in a positive sense.

Dopo

After - Laby Lamb (2015)

Although this record by Aly Spaltro, 28-year-old from Brunswick, Maine (who moved to Brooklyn in 2010), aka Lady Lamb (formerly Lady Lamb the Beekeeper) is dated two years ago, you will find something very "fresh", in case you decide to listen to it. She started writing music in 2007, working in a DVD shop, closing shift, and the night he tried and recorded; his first works are home recordings distributed in the local Brunswick area.
A voice that caresses you even in the most scratchy tracks, which will remind you among others that of Feist, a navigated rock attitude, a bluesy aftertaste, and an incredible ability to write beautiful songs, pure talent. If you start listening to Sunday Shoes you risk falling in love instantly. Absolutely to keep an eye on, in 2016 she released the EP Tender Warriors Club.

Riposo

Rest - Charlotte Gainsbourg (2017)

Despite all the admiration I feel for Charlotte Gainsbourg, a woman who is not beautiful but super charming, and a very talented actress, I have to admit every time one of her record comes out, that her passion for music is definitely superfluous. Of course, it is not that her records are unlistenable, her fame, her background, her friendships, allow her to surround herself each time with musicians, composers, producers, highly respectable: on this record there is a track written by nothing less than Paul McCartney (Songbird in a Cage). Respectable is the fact that the entire record is a reflection on the deaths of the father and the half-sister Kate Barry, with particular attention to alcohol addiction, but the strictly musical result is repetitive, obvious, and sometimes even embarrassing.

Psicosi

Psychosis - Cavalera Conspiracy (2017)

The Cavalera Conspiracy, after the unexpected reunion of the two brothers Max and Igor during a Soulfly concert in 2006, are the band that marks the reconciliation of the two Brazilians, after a 10-year feud. Fourth disc after Inflikted (2008), Blunt Force Trauma (2011) and Pandemonium (2014), this Psychosis continues on the lines of the previous ones, naturally incorporating strong elements of thrash and death metal, trying to "use" the passion for DJ sets of Igor, and vaguely recalling the world-tribal influences that have made Sepultura, with Roots, the leap in quality, from excellent metal band to cult band. The result is not completely useless: although many things are predictable, there is a taste for experimentation. Especially the second part of the album is quite surprising, with use of jaw-harp, digeridoo, hurdy-gurdy, synth. Special guests Justin Broadrick of Godflesh on Hellfire, and Jose Mangin, a radio host, who lends his voice to the spoken word on the final Excruciating.

La figlia del guardiano del fuoco

The Firewatcher's Daughter - Brandi Carlile (2015)

Ce ne sono molti davvero belli, Wherever is Your Heart, The Things I Regret, Blood Muscle Skin & Bone, I Belong to You, Alibi, Murder in the City. By the Way, I Forgive You. Siate pronti.

It amazes me that the musician in question was not reported to me by my friend Monty, but I discovered the existence by myself, reading that she was mentioned in an interview, if I remember correctly, by Julien Baker. Friendly from the biographical notes (she dedicated Mainstream Kid, track from this album, performed at Late Night with Seth Meyers, to Bernie Sanders, she declares herself lesbian without too many frills, she is married to Catherine, they have a daughter, this year she did release a disc, Cover Stories, where some famous musicians - Pearl Jam, Dolly Parton, Adele, Torres, Miranda Lambert - reread the tracks of her most famous record, The Story from 2007, and whose foreword is signed by Barack Obama, all devolved to an NGO - War Child), I must say that, although I do not consider myself an Americana expert, the attitude, the voice, the flexibility, of Brandi Carlile, it's amazing, not having ever heard from her. She moves her music from country in many directions, but the base is that one, that kind of melancholy during the slow tracks, juggles with rock, and her tracks have a pop air, they are all catchy, without ever being predictable. There are many really beautiful, Wherever is Your Heart, The Things I Regret, Blood Muscle Skin & Bone, I Belong to You, Alibi, Murder in the City. Soon, in February 2018, will be released its brand new By the Way, I Forgive You. Be ready.

Attention everyone, Bjork is back. Ninth disc, a record that looks with optimism to the future, a future that she would like to be both technological and naturalistic, a love record that contrasts with the previous Vulnicura, which derives from the pain of a finished love (her separation from Matthew Barney). The Icelandic keeps faith with her reputation as an avant-garde artist: the disc is thought from the beginning together with Arca (with whom she had already collaborated on the previous Vulnicura, but in that case the Venezuelan had taken over already completed compositions, while here he participated massively to the composition, as well as to the production), therefore very electronic and full of synth, but at the same time, is based on the use of a group of flutists (as many as 13), and of the Hamrahlid Choir. Last but not least, the use of "natural" sound samples, of insects and birds, recorded on the outside by the artist herself, or taken from David Toop's Hekura (one of Bjork's favorite albums). The picture is completed by harp, cello and contra bass. The song-form now it's a faint memory, the atmosphere is, at the same time, powerful and rarefied, the musical creations transport the listener in a parallel universe. Contemporary classical music, perhaps. Bjork is always a few steps ahead, compared to everyone else.

Ex batterista

Ex Drummer - Di Koen Mortier (2007)
Giudizio sintetico: da vedere (4/5)

Ostenda, Belgio.

Based on the eponymous novel by the super-prolific Flemish writer Herman Brusselmans, he was almost right my friend Beach, insisting very much on me to finally see this film, calling it "the Trainspotting for adults". Seeing this film, first of all we are sorry that the director is not well known, and that he hasn't had the opportunity to shoot more films. Ex Drummer is a brilliant film, much is due to the story, but Mortier shoot it definitely as it should be: hallucinatory, close the actors, dirty, ugly and bad, but with a sarcasm without limits. The actors have real fucking faces, and the fact that right after seeing this film, I saw Jan Hammenecker (Dikke Lul/Fat Dick) as a policeman in the French series Les Témoins, made me laugh big time.
Portentous soundtrack, with Isis and Mogwai among others. I could tell you many other things, but I will just tell you that you can not miss it.

Great Again

Ally continua a vedere clowns.

Stavolta, Murphy e Falchuck hanno fatto decisamente centro, almeno secondo me.

This time, Murphy and Falchuck have definitely made a center, at least in my opinion. Inventing a season that starts from a real fact, and we are still living, elaborating all the steps of the formation of a cult, telling the stories of the most famous cults of the recent past, and embedding a screenplay of the main story full of the usual plot twists from the manual. Having kept the number of episodes relatively low, the main defect of some previous seasons has been avoided (too many finals, too many "dragging"), and the cast is excellent as always, although missing the "big girls" (Lange, Bates, Bassett, Rabe) . The absence of Lily Rabe leaves Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson, both very good as always, the only actors present in all seven seasons. Paulson, at the moment, she is the only confirmed in the cast of the eighth season; the series has also been renewed for a ninth season.

La reina del agua

Fear the Walking Dead - Di Robert Kirkman e Dave Erickson - Stagione 3 (16 episodi; AMC) - 2017

Fear the Walking Dead, The Walking Dead's companion series, has reached the status of boredom, and unfortunately, it does so already at the third season. The noteworthy characters are kept alive through very stretched script tricks, and drag themselves wearily into an uncertain future. I felt like leaving mid-season, but I took courage and continued to the end: I probably will not resume at the time of the fourth season, although AMC has announced a rotation of the showrunners.

In questo momento, siamo liberi (Città)

In This Moment We Are Free - Cities - Vuur (2017)

The Vuur (fire, in Dutch) are the newest project by Anneke van Giersbergen, former singer of The Gathering, and of which we talked about a few weeks ago, about her album from last year with the Icelandic Arstidir. Wanted by the same Anneke, with an all-Dutch line-up of excellent musicians, and that she already known through her past experiences (not least that of The Gentle Storm), aims to be very metal, while through her further solo career, so she says, she will continue to explore the other extreme musical, folk and soft.
Of course, for Converge fans, considering the Vuur an extreme might sound like a joke, but it's a matter of point of view. The Vuur play progressive metal with djent influences, but of course, Anneke's voice tinges everything with a very different, more "gentle" and melodic, airy and almost classical tone. It is definitely not my cup of tea, as well as that of many others I know, but it certainly is well done.

Rosso prima del nero

Red Before Black - Cannibal Corpse (2017)

I never told you about the band from Buffalo, New York, here at their fourteenth album since 1990, one of the bands that invented death metal, or at least among the first to practice it, bands that appeared, maybe you remember them, in Ace Ventura - Pet Detective. The Cannibal Corpse have had a hard life, accused, for their lyrics and their gore covers, from US politics, censored in Australia, in Germany, even in Russia, where in 2014 they were prevented from playing 6 of the 8 shows expected due to protests by activists of the Orthodox Church. In fact, they are very normal people, they share the love for splatter films and bloody stories.
Returning to talk about music, the fourteenth disc, as mentioned, reminds us that if there were no Slayer there would not be many metal bands, and that a record of the Cannibal Corpse is a good background to train or to vent anger in a non-violent manner . The record is impeccable at a technical and stylistic level, powerful, bad, and the fact that the band members are close to 50 years does not damage the validity of the work, indeed, you can appreciate the maturity, the experience, the accumulation of influences. In case someone asks you "what is death metal?", you could just make him listen to "Red Before Black", and no music expert would have anything to say about it.
