Camera della dopamina

Dopamine Chamber - Fontaines D.C. (2026)

Neppure la collaborazione con Rosalía (Where Is Gone?)

As those who follow *fassbinder* will know, I have tracked this Irish band since their early days—offering praise when it was deserved, while refraining from overhyping them when it wasn’t (you can find my thoughts on their first three albums by using the search bar). The hype surrounding them grew tiresome quite quickly, which is perhaps why I chose not to review their fourth album, *Romance*. The current situation has given me ample time to listen to their fifth release, *Dopamine Chamber*, and I must say that, once again, the acclaim surrounding it feels unjustified. Having fully transitioned from post-punk to post-new wave, I can confidently state that any album by Interpol—within this same genre—contains superior songs. Even the collaboration with Rosalía ("Where Is Gone?") isn't enough to elevate the record above mediocrity; I’m not saying it’s a bad album—it’s certainly well-crafted—but it all feels incredibly derivative and predictable.

Luna

A singer-songwriter from the Faroe Islands with a long career, both as a solo artist and otherwise. I hadn’t listened to her before; I stumbled upon an announcement for her new record and read a few enthusiastic comments. Don’t be fooled: there is little of that mystery or Nordic epic quality in Tungl’s music—the kind that might lead you to think of the magic of Wardruna. Eivør Pálsdóttir’s voice is undoubtedly beautiful, and the songs aren’t bad—in fact, some are quite interesting (the closing track, "Everyone But Me," is my favorite)—but it’s a brand of pop-ambient that fails to leave a lasting impression.

Al lavoro nei campi della bomba

At Work in the Fields of the Bomb - Deafheaven (2026)

(cit.), oppure, semplicemente come "ehi ciao, come va?". Fate voi.

A three-track EP—featuring one long ambient interlude—released without any prior announcement, just to remind us how cool Deafheaven are: yes, *them*, the band that dresses like Wilco but hits as hard as Lorna Shore. It contains two sprawling tracks dense with black metal that scratches and draws blood, leaving aside both the shoegaze/blackgaze elements and the clean vocals. In short, it’s something that could be interpreted as "We're back, assholes!" (quote), or simply as "Hey, hi, how's it going?" Take your pick.

Amore selvaggio

Wild Love - Nina Winder-Lind (2026)

This debut from the young Swedish singer-songwriter is one of the most acclaimed releases around—one you’ll surely soon see topping lists in various specialist magazines. Let’s talk about it. There isn’t anything truly original in the music of this young Swedish singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist (who is based in Brighton, UK, and is also a member of New Eves). As you listen to the debut, you’ll spot a wide range of influences—from the Rolling Stones and the Beatles to a certain brand of alternative folk, plus dashes of punk. Her voice displays both self-assurance and confidence in her abilities, yet it also comes across as raucous (it reminded me of a slightly tipsy Basia Bulat, for instance)—in the best possible sense: aggressive yet sunny, and even theatrical on some tracks. The compositions are asymmetrical yet interesting, and the overall diversity is surprising—and impressive. In short, while listening didn't make me want to hail it as a miracle, I did try to understand the source of all this admiration; I’ve shared my take—now let me know yours.

Approdo

Landfall - Wage War (2026)

Niente male.

This is the sixth album from the Florida-based band. If you recall my thoughts on their previous releases, they gradually won me over with the quality of their sound—a powerful yet melodic brand of metalcore that rivals the genre's best while retaining a distinct personality. Once again, it’s a heavy record, yet it features plenty of tracks that make you want to sing along and headbang at the same time. Not bad at all.

Monarca

Monarch - Dead Poets Society (2026)

This band from Boston, Massachusetts—a new discovery for me—is now on its third album, delivering a multifaceted brand of alt-rock rich in diverse influences; with *Monarch*, they have released what I consider one of the most exciting records of the year. As I listened, I enjoyed mentally tracing their influences and coming up with comparisons: a less cloying Muse, Chevelle mixed with Twenty One Pilots, or a less hyped-up Turnstile. They aren't exactly metal, yet they pack a powerful punch when the guitars kick in; Jack Underkofler’s vocals soar effortlessly and work to perfection, the melodies are stirring and full of vigor, and the song structures—while complex and at times progressive—never feel bloated or overlong. In short, it’s an album that’s hard to take out of heavy rotation.

Country/Disco

Crisco - Miranda Lambert (2026)

Peccato.

It is disappointing to say, but my assessment of the tenth album by one of the stars of modern US country-pop is rather negative. It is disappointing because Miranda Lambert is an artist I have long admired—as evidenced by my many comments on various past records of hers—and one I believe is capable of much better; yet the impression is that, this time, she did the bare minimum just to get an album out. There are no highlights—not even a single song, however modest, that manages to leave a mark. A shame.

Il padre di tutto si risveglia

The Allfather Awakens - Amon Amarth (2026)

This is the thirteenth album from the Swedish band—a group I thought about a lot during the 2026 World Cup (Norwegian fans "hijacked" the so-called "Viking rowing" move from Amon Amarth's audience). In my humble opinion, one has to admit that the band attempts to introduce some variety into what I’ve always described as classic heavy metal with growled/harsh vocals—adding touches of deathcore and melodies inspired by Nordic folk (albeit played with powerful riffs), to name a few examples. In short, while they may not be masters of originality, they certainly aren't stuck in a rut.

Solaris - The Ocean (2026)

It is their tenth album and yet another lineup change, but the substance remains intact and top-notch for this German collective. Moreover, I am partially proven wrong regarding the direction I thought they had taken with the previous *Holocene*. *Solaris*—loosely inspired by the Russian master’s cinematic masterpiece of the same name—is, in my view, a fine record: atmospheric, hard to pigeonhole, powerful, experimental, and evocative. We could use more post-metal like this.

Il resto di Sivert Høyem

The Rest Of Sivert Høyem - Sivert Høyem (2026)

As he himself puts it when discussing the release of this album—a natural follow-up to the *Best Of* released a few months ago—"I’m cleaning out the archives, revealing all the stuff I’ve kept to myself for the last twenty years". This is, therefore, an album for devotees of this Norwegian musician, composer, and singer—an artist I’ve mentioned often, given my fandom for Madrugada, the other band he is involved with and the one through which I first discovered him. It features unreleased tracks, outtakes, B-sides, and covers (Springsteen, Roxy Music, Dire Straits, and other gems) on an album that is, as always, delightfully pop yet tinged with blues, soul, and folk; it is expertly played and sung by one of the finest voices around.

This time, it was the Spotify algorithm that led me to this French duo—though looking at the titles of their previous releases (an EP and an album), I seem to recall someone mentioning them to me before, or perhaps having stumbled upon them already (such is the nature of aging). They are the creators of this EP, which features an extremely experimental style of metal clearly influenced by ancient classical culture in many of its facets. It is a fascinating and demanding journey—spanning metal, techno, folk, ambient, and classical music. Try to keep up.

Andrà tutto bene

We're All Going To Be Fine - Lost in Kyiv (2026)

This is the fifth album from the Parisian band formerly known as Lost in Kiev (on March 25, 2026, the members announced on social media that they were adopting the name Lost in Kyiv, aligning better with their values and their view of the situation in Ukraine). Their sound is a blend of post-rock and metal—leaning at times towards blackgaze and at others towards progressive rock—that is highly melodic and experimental without ever becoming heavy or inaccessible. It is a record I really enjoyed.

Annichilista

Annihilist - Hippotraktor (2026)

This is the third album from the Belgian band (with members hailing from Mechelen and Antwerp), which shares vocalist Stefan De Graef with Psychonaut. They are (accurately) described as progressive/post-metal, and I would say they owe a great deal to the best of Tool. Technically flawless, the record is both extremely powerful and highly enjoyable.

Troppo veloce per morire

Too Fast to Die - Archspire (2026)

Disco massiccio.

This fifth album from the Canadian band confirms everything previously said about them: relentless, suffocating technical death metal that is extremely precise and well-produced. The sporadic melodic passages are also highly interesting, and I must honestly say that listening to the record leaves me curious to hear what they might sound like if they decided to slow down, even just a little. A massive album.

Tempi difficili

Trying Times - James Blake (2026)

This is the seventh album from the British whiz kid—an artist I’ve followed for a long time, even if the genre he plays isn't exactly my favorite. Yet, once again—after a couple of tracks that initially left me puzzled—I recognized his signature touch: that skillful, velvety way he writes and performs soulful songs, blending them with decidedly modern, cutting-edge arrangements and inventive flourishes. It is, yet again, an excellent effort from James Blake.

Salvatrice

Sotera - Junius (2026)

This time, I’ve come across this band from Boston, Massachusetts—now on their fourth album (though, for the record, they’ve also released numerous EPs over their 23-year career)—thanks to a tip-off from the usual "well-informed" sources. They create highly interesting post-metal that is, in their case too, truly classy. The initial impression is genuinely disorienting; for instance, Joseph E. Martinez’s vocal timbre reminded me—at first listen—of Dave Gahan (I don’t need to tell you which band he sings for, do I?). The rest is incredibly powerful, high-impact metal featuring progressive compositional structures. Another excellent record.

20261003

Cicli nel sogno infinito

Cycles in the Infinite Dream - REZN (2026)

This is the sixth album from the band based in Chicago, Illinois. It makes for a rather interesting listen: the group is a quartet—Phil Cangelosi (bass, backing vocals), Rob McWilliams (guitars, lead vocals, sitar), Spencer Ouellette (modular synths, saxophone), and Patrick Dunn (percussion, sitar)—with a decidedly distinctive lineup. The vocals are clean, and the sound is powerful and punchy—often psychedelic (there are moments that even recall Pink Floyd)—yet they are unmistakably a metal band. And a classy one at that.

20261002

Santuario

Sanctuary - Evanescence (2026)

This is the sixth studio album in a 32-year career for the band led by Amy Lee, the only remaining member of the original lineup. I stand by everything I said when reviewing their previous album: within the genre, it is an excellent record—featuring great songs that are just the right amount of crowd-pleasing, a pleasing production, technical perfection, and a magnificent voice.

...L'inizio della fine

...Beginning of the End - Portrayal of Guilt (2026)

I stumbled upon this—the fifth album by the Austin, Texas-based band—convinced I was already familiar with the group. After repeated listens, I’m no longer so sure; perhaps I simply liked the name. The fact remains that this record is one of the most distinctive listening experiences I’ve had lately. It is a bizarre melting pot of extreme metal, raw hardcore punk, and extreme passages bordering on grindcore (reminding me of Knoll, partly due to the heavily horror-like atmosphere), alongside electronic and noise elements. It is certainly not an album that grabs you immediately, but it is decidedly interesting.

Diventare cattivi

Get Mean - Boy Harsher (2026)

This is the third album from the duo—formed in Savannah, Georgia, and now based in Northampton, Massachusetts—that has achieved cult status among a remarkably diverse audience (ranging from trans models to metalheads). I wrote about them when their second album came out, and this time—while standing by those earlier impressions—I can add that this record has a sunnier sound; it confirms their 80s influences and, at times, strongly evokes Bronski Beat (albeit with a female vocalist and no falsetto, naturally). In short, another incredibly cool record, even if it is decidedly derivative.
