Il quinto disco di Angel Olsen, registrato in dieci giorni, insieme all'ingegnere del suono Michael Harris in una chiesa cattolica sconsacrata a Anacortes, Washington (l'eco sulla voce che potete ascoltare è naturale, ottenuto usando i corridoi della chiesa), è un'operazione particolare. Nove tracce su undici, sono esattamente le stesse del precedente All Mirrors (le riconoscerete dal titolo "camuffato), arrangiate in uno stile decisamente più intimista (l'album è totalmente chitarra e voce). Due tracce del precedente non appaiono (Spring, Endgame), e sono "sostituite" da due inediti, la canzone che dà il titolo all'album Whole New Mess,e Waving, Smiling. Ho letto recensioni che inneggiavano perfino al capolavoro, non arriverò a tanto, ma senza dubbio è un disco notevole. L'intimità che riesce a creare è profonda, le canzoni, che come detto conoscevamo per larga parte, rivivono e arrivano ancor più dirette, toccano il cuore, la voce della Olsen è molto particolare, può non piacere al primo impatto, ma conquista lentamente. Potreste trovarvi a piangere improvvisamente su Chance (Forever Love). Prendetevi un momento, e ascoltate bene questo disco.

I have read reviews that praised even the masterpiece, I will not go that far, but without a doubt it is a remarkable record.
