Giudizio sintetico: si può vedere (3/5)
Nel gennaio 2000, un ragazzo di nome Cullen Active entra nella sua scuola nel quartiere di New Brighton a Staten Island, va in un'aula e spara all'insegnante. Una compagna, la tredicenne Celeste Montgomery, parla con calma e compassione a Cullen e si offre di pregare con lui. Tuttavia, lui le spara al collo e continua a sparare ad altri studenti.
Mentre si riprende lentamente dalla sua ferita, Celeste e sua sorella maggiore, Ellie, scrivono musica insieme. Poco dopo, durante un evento tenuto in memoria delle vittime della sparatoria, Celeste canta una canzone che lei e Ellie hanno scritto intitolata "Wrapped Up". La canzone diventa un successo immediato e Celeste viene presto messa sotto contratto da un manager.
Complessa riflessione sulla celebrità (curioso come anche qui, come in Her Smell, si scelga la narrazione a capitoli) come secondo lungometraggio di Brady Corbet come regista (e sceneggiatore), con una Natalie Portman mattatrice e, come sempre, bravissima, e un altrettanto ottimo cast di contorno. Jude Law misuratissimo nei panni del manager, ottima Stacy Martin nella parte della sorella maggiore di Celeste, Ellie (l'avevamo vista, bellissima e acerba, in Nymphomaniac, dove recitava la versione giovane di Charlotte Gainsbourg), impressionante la giovanissima Raffey Cassidy, nel doppio ruolo di Celeste da giovane e poi in quello di Albertine, la figlia (lei invece l'avevamo già vista in The Killing of a Sacred Deer). Nonostante tutto, a lungo andare il film si rivela un po' pesante.
Complex reflection on celebrity (curious as also here, as in Her Smell, the director choose a chapters narrative) as Brady Corbet's second feature film as director (and screenwriter), with a super Natalie Portman, as always very good, and an equally excellent side cast. Jude Law is very measured as the manager, excellent Stacy Martin in the part of Celeste's older sister, Ellie (we had seen her, beautiful and immature, in Nymphomaniac, where she was playing the young version of Charlotte Gainsbourg), impressive the young Raffey Cassidy, in double role of the young Celeste and then in that of Albertine, the daughter (we had already seen her in The Killing of a Sacred Deer). In spite of everything, in the long run the film proves to be a bit heavy.
