Okovi - Zola Jesus (2017)

Fifth full-length album for Zola Jesus (Nina Roza Danilova), after a period of depression and bad things for people close to her. To her opinion, she has finally found back the pleasure of composing music and singing, finding naturally the urgency in these misadventures. Although my first impression was "beautiful, but always the same as herself," with the deepening of listening to this new album of this fascinating artist, the pure beauty that manages to infuse everything that "touches" emerges in a decisive, clear, sometimes overwhelming manner. Zola Jesus has an extremely personal touch, which can blend drones, goth, rock, noise, dance, pop, masterful orchestral arrangements, creating songs from the unique and universal epic. Although each disc seems apparently much like the previous one, the strength of the songs conceived by this girl is always overwhelming. For explanations on the title and on the various tracks, read this interview by Jenn Pelly for Pitchfork.
